Paul McCartney: good but no virtuoso
Krist Novoselic: very average bass player
Stuart Sufcliffe: absolutely terrible bass player
Noel Reading: playing with the world's greatest guitarist doesn't automatically make you a great bass player

I agree with this assessment.  In fact Noel Redding was a good player but Jimi ended up playing alot of bass on the albums (p*ssing off Noel).

In general good bass players are heard, not seen.  Like Entwhistle.

I also appreciate Chris Squire but I just can't take Yes.  I hear his Fish Out of Water album is pretty good.

But of the rock players here I'd go with Entwhistle.

I kinda go with this. Entwistle had incredible fingers, ability and restraint. As well as the shouts to Larry Graham, James Jamerson. Carol Kaye should be in there too.

You've gotta be kidding... That guy's never played anything difficult in his life... The kind of basslines he plays are the ones you let little kids play for their first ever bass guitar lessons...

LOL. It's true. With or Without You is the first bassline I knew and one I always teach first to someone learning bass.

Clayton probably earns the most though. If he got a pound for every note he played....He would'nt earn as much as some of the others mentioned here though.
That's not to say he is a great ambassador for the musical rule of 'It's what you don't play.' He still has got a good taste chip and plays whats required.

Wheres Mark King? I only mention cos he's from the Isle of Wight. He was voted best bass player in the world once upon a time.

JOKING about him on the list!!!! But true he was/is highly regarded.

Just saw The Jam's Bruce Foxton in a live footage. He does some very nice bass-things there! Great stuff.

There's some really good choices here, but I went with John Entwistle. Love his work on "The Real Me".

Geddy Lee of Rush should be on this poll as well. Outstanding!
