Title: Wild Life
Post by: on September 11, 2005, 03:51:12 PM
What a bizarre little homemade album this is. I admit putting off adding it to the collection because the consensus was alway that this was pretty bad. Its got its moments, but its a Macca product like none other. Probably won't be played much. I do like 'Dear Friend' quite a bit.

God, this HAS to be Pall McCartney's (Wings') worst LP ever - I have only ever played once!

Al, we went over this before,,,,,(McCartney 2).

I throw in 'Wild Life' every now and then as theres a few good tunes. 'Tomorrow', 'Dear Friend', 'Some People Never Know', and of course 'Give Ireland Back To The Irish' (yeah, I have the import with the bonus tracks). Overall,,,,yeah, its pretty bad, but I can tolerate it.

I got the import with the bonus tracks too. Maybe it just needs to sink in a bit.

McCartney II isn't great but it's better than GMRTBS & Press To Play.

Exactly! If you want to try to hit upon Pauls second worst album, give 'Pipes Of Peace' a spin. Afterwards, tell me how great 'The Man' is. At least 'So Bad' came from it.

Here's a review of 'Pipes' from Amazon that amuses me.

I am writing this review nearly 20 years after purchasing this insipid album of Paul's. I threw it away years ago when I was moving, and I still feel a flush in my face when I think that I actually spent over 10 hard earned dollars to purchase my final vinyl from McCartney. Listening to a song about a lion tamer made me cringe at the time, and I still hope I run into Paul someday so I can shake him down for a refund (adusted for inflation of course). If this album were a flavor, it would be vanilla with salmonella; what isn't bland, makes you feel sick to your stomach. Don't buy this unless you the kind of fanatical McCartney collector who would buy the liner notes to his tax forms.

Unfortunately, I lean towards the last sentence of the review.

You expect a certain level from your heroes, but 'Pipes of Peace' is as refreshing as taking a big swig from a Dr. Pepper can and getting a mouthful of toenail clippings.

I loves me some Wild Life.

"Dear Friend" is plaintive and endearing as only Macca can be.

"Some People Never Know" and "Wild Life" are also nice.

"Tomorrow" has to be one of the most infectious tunes he's ever done (therefore, one of the most infectious tunes anyone's ever done).

The problem with Wild Life was the choice of songs and the running order. He begins the album with 2 songs of nonsense (Mumbo would have been a good closer), and then follows up with a cover tune! There is NO WAY this album could have been anything but panned. So what if it contains 4 or 5 great McCartney songs? Everyone had turned it off by that point. :)

I think Wild Life was Paul's odd answer-record to Plastic Ono Band.

Interesting.
I've never though about it... -and it makes me feel really bad, 'cos I've always thought WWL was a right album (for those years of innocence and good feelings,...,- OK, tkitna?-) and that idea never came to me. :-/

I'd go with the art-work being a nod at POB . Don't know about the content

Yes, OK. But thinking in musical terms, you've made me think about them: Production, lyrics, sparse instrumentation (in Paul's not always, but...), people who played in them (Klaus and Ringo versus Denny and Linda - their somehow futureband mates),... You've made me think about them, Kevin.
With these two I've got some homework for today and maybe Tomorrow.  ;) ;D Thanks. ;)

Cheers, but all Blue Hawaii's work. I think the artwork connection is in Alan Carrs book.

Must admit that John and Yoko win for the disc cover :)

But it's what's inside that counts. Both records strike me as the real 'Rishiskesh TM' concept albums that they'd never gotten round to making as a group while on spiritual retreat. I'm guessing both liked the demo simplicity of what they'd recorded away from the public eye enough to instinctively return to the form, next chance they had to get away from it all again, post-Band.
