Here is the very first issue of Mersey Beat, published 6th July 1961. On the right-hand side of the page is John's brilliant history of The Beatles; written in the same style as his books - In His Own Write (1964) and A Spaniard In The Works (1965).
It's hilarious and also explains where the title of one of Paul's albums came from!
Hope you like it :D

Mersey Beat (The beginnings of the Beatles) is the first Beatles book I ever bought and definitely one of my favorites.
I love the old ads and the entries by John and the two from Paul.
--------------------------------------------------------------
There is a letter from a reader (dated Oct. 5 -19, 1961) that reads:
Could you please print the reason why one of the Fabulous "Beatles" (the one who wears the dark glasses) hasn't been appearing
This included pictures of John standing on the corner of the Reeperbahn reading a newspaper dressed only in underpants
Yeah that is an excellent book!
Actually, a few of those pictures ended up on the White Album poster!

Beatcomber (John) writes in Mersey Beat:
SMALL SAM
Once upon a Tom there was a small llittle Stan, who was very small.
"You are very small Stan", they said.
"I am only lttle.' replied Stan answering, feeling very small. Who could blame him, for Stan was only small?
"You must be small Stan," people were oft heard to cry, noticing how extremely very small Stan was in fact. But being small (Stan ws small) had its condensations. Who esle but Stan (the small) could wear all those small clothes?
Stan was highly regarded by everyone (for Stan was small and little). However, one day Stan saw an adverse in the Mersey Bean for "Club you quickly grow your boots." So on that very day Small Stan (by name called) purchased a pair of the very same. So now when Stan passes by, folks say "Is not that small Stan wearing a pair of those clubs you quickly grow you boots?"
And it is.

I absolutely love those stories of John's! Also, have you read any of the adverts that John placed in Mersey Beat? They're brilliant! :)
-
Yes!
I do love them! :)
Always makes me smile to read them and think about a barely 21 year old John digging in his pockets to see if he has enough money to place the ads.
-
Wow, JOHN was soo great at writing that kind of stufff.
I've also found very very interesting that letter form that early fan (we're talking about 1961!) asking about Stuart. Thanks for posting it!

I read this book called Mersey Beat by Bill Harry himself about 15 years ago with all the classic articles about the Beatles & the other British groups at the time which was interesting.
-
i think bill may embellish a little because he was one of the first besides bob wooler to jump on the beatles band wagon....
