This sounds like a great idea for Ringo. I didnt know about it, thx. The Liverpool theme will hopefully make it a bestseller for him. Usually I always back anything Ringo does, but this project sounds sounds especially intriguing.

Paul was the first former Beatle to give homage to his old hometown w/ "Liverpool Oratorio"

This is so exciting. Paul and Ringo will play on Liverpool in 2008. Don't you think Ringo's gonna play Liverpool 8? Could it be better? I don't think so! :)

I'm so happy for him.

Liverpool 8 is deadly, positively deadly! I just listened to it on Amazon and I'm a soggy mess.

Ringo is really aging like a champ. I'm so glad he's getting more personal in his songs as time goes by.

Thanks for the pre-listening link. I have a feeling I'll end up buying this one.

Ouch. So far I've only listened to the title track, but sorry to my ears it's awful. The lyric is cringe-inducingly bad and the whole thing sounds embarrasingly like the Peter Serafinowicz parody "Goldfinger" I posted in the youtube section a while ago. The only charitable thing I can say is that it has a certain amateurish charm (like your kids drawings you hang on the fridge.)
Hopefully I'll listen to the rest before I finish tonight.

I must be missing something. All respect to others opinions, but this sounds so dated. It would have sounded old twenty years ago. Dated and bad. Bad bad. The songs are awful, the vocals (even for Ringo) are bland bordering on inept and the backing sounds like some crappy eighties computer programme. I really want to love Ringo but this is embarrasing. If this was some unknown guy playing in a bar I'd either have to get very drunk or leave. Some of it actually made me laugh and I'm not sure it's supposed to. "I think I'm going under, my heart it beats like thunder.." NOooooooo
Yay. I've got the full set now. Back to the "say something nice" thread.

"Liverpool 8, also the title of the album's upbeat, vibrant lead track, "refers to the section of Liverpool where I used to live," explains Ringo"
I think Ringo's been a bit naughty here. He's all over the news today - he's headlining the concert tonight that kicks of Liverpools tenure as European City Of Culture ( ! ) for 2008. And guess what all the millions of banners, posters and flyers that are decorating the city to celebrate this year long event  say: Yes, you guessed it, Liverpool 8. And Ringo, bless him, just happens to release an album/single of the same name, almost on the same day,  which happily reminesces (sp) about the city.
Tacky Ringo, tacky.

I don't think it's tacky at all.
It's a tribute to the place he was born.
And I think Liverpool is extremely lucky to have someone to launch their year in this way.
He didn't invent the fact that he was born in Liverpool 8 in that tiny house in Madryn Street.
Would you prefer him to deny it?

My point is that he's saying the title comes from his postcode, when in fact it seems to be a shameless attempt to cash in on the cities culture capital celebrations. Either that or it's one hell of a happy coincidence that his Liverpool 8 hits the shops just as Liverpool 8 logo's appear all over the city and he headlines the Liverpool 8 concert.. He's known for ages that on almost the same day he releases Liverpool 8 he's headlining the Liverpool 8 celebrations.
It would be better (but still tacky) if he just told the truth.

Maybe I'm being unkind. I'll settle for "Ringo has spotted an oppotunity and has used it to his advantage." It's still a rubbish song and album though.

I got as far as 'Gone Are The Days', which sounds like it was a promising song in the making, until the band came in. The title tracks lyrics are awful, but the song is OK.

I like Ringo, but as usual, I find that I can only listen to his singing for two or three songs running. Usually his albums are fairly ordinary, but contain a couple of very good numbers. 5 tracks in I haven't heard either of them yet. Sorry Ringo.

*gives Kevin a happy pill*

I think it's a charming song, and I think it's wonderful that Ringo has found an opportunity to share his recollections with a wider audience. He's always had to work harder to get noticed (I haven't listened to any of his solo albums all the way through, just certain tracks-- sorry, Ringo!).

I was completely aware there was a Liverpool 8 thing going on. What fun! Ringo does this chanting thing like a football match-- what fun! Ringo talks about his experience in the Fabs-- what fun! I would not be a sourpuss about this for anything. The Beatles (at least in the beginning) were about having fun, and to my mind Ringo captures that mood perfectly.

When did music appreciation get all grim and serious like all those boring literature classes that suck the life out of the finest classic and make you want to stab the book with a pen? Is this familiarity breeding contempt-- everyone has to jump through so many damn hoops you just can't like anything any more? It has to be coldly analysed like a scientific specimen? It's a danger with any profession-- I have to guard against it with novels, and even then not many pass muster. But I think it's kind of sad that so much of the sheer enjoyment of listening to a new song appears to be gone. *puts on a bright red dress and goes chanting and dancing with the unwashed masses*

Yes indeed.

Is Ringo cashing in on Liverpool '08?

No. But he realised the opportunity he had to bring it all back home.

Is Liverpool pleased to have Ringo as an amabassador?

Yes.

Is his new album the next Sergeant Pepper?

Obviously not.

But it's fun. Maybe that's why he left home all those years ago.

To have fun!

LIVERPOOL 8, the single, #98 in the UK charts, his first UK chart placing since La De Da (#63) almost 10 years ago!

Now Ringo could re-release the Photograph hits album, with Liverpool 8 on it! This is another hit!  ;D

I think you can get to No. 98 by selling a thousand copies, or less these days. Most of those were probably bought in Liverpool last week.

Not really, only a little more so maybe than referring to Paul as "Paul", as that's not his real name either.

The NYT can be a little formal at times, it's not like Spin mag or anything.

9000 copies estimated worldwide?

What a travesty. Well, if even the Beatle fans wont pick it up, what hope does it have?

I belong to a couple of classic rock forums and theres been more interest shown there then here. Thats what upsets me the most. I guess Ringo should just throw in the towel. I suppose we can all just continue to buy Pauls bullsh*t (Chaos and Creation not included) and be content.

Thank you for this info, Wingsman. I have no idea where to get sales figures. Do you know if this figure includes downloads? It might be signalling a shift to digital sales, if we have low CD sales, but the downloads are tracked a different way.

Ringo has been hanging out in the top 35 at Amazon. His peak was like #11 I think.

I have no idea harihead. The 9,000 copies figure I readed it somewhere. I don't remember now where. It's a shame that this album is another commercial failure for Ringo. I'm listening to it and I think it's marvellous. A fantastic album. In fact is the first I listen to a Ringo Starr album. His voice sounds great. I listened to this alot in the year it came out, I liked Gone Are The Days and the Pasodobles track. I did mean to pick up the last two: Y Not and Ringo 2012 but haven't done so as yet, not really gone too deep into Ringo solo. Do the last couple of albums have a different feel? Didn't Mark Hudson get the chop on this record?
Title: Re: Liverpool 8
Post by: tkitna on January 02, 2015, 04:13:50 AM
Yeah, Hudson and Ringo had a tiff and Hudson got the hook.  Personally, I didn't think 'Y Not' was very good.  '2012' was better, but still not up to previous efforts.  I hated the collaborations with Ben Harper on 'Y Not'.  Just didn't gel for me.
Title: Re: Liverpool 8
Post by: Ollier on January 03, 2015, 02:35:21 AM
I thought that Hudson made Ringo sound very old time pop what with his constant punning on old song titles and Beatlesey cheese backing vocals, granted that's all part of the Ringo bit but not entirely. I'm glad Ringo moved on from that sound, I'll catch Ringo 2012 before the new release...

Maybe in a Microscope thread we can discuss these more modern records... when we manage to get past 1982.
