Song Of The Week - Any Time At All
« on: July 16, 2015, 02:24:30 AM »

Any Time At All

An effort in writing It Won't Be Long - same ilk.  C to A minor, C to A minor with me shouting.

   John Lennon   Playboy 1980

John and Cynthia Lennon along with George Harrison and Pattie Boyd spent nearly the entire month of May 1964 on vacation in Tahiti.  John probably wrote Any Time At All during their vacation.

On 2 June 1964, The Beatles entered EMI Studio Two at 2:30 PM to work on the last three songs needed for the British A Hard Day's Night album.  They started off with Any Time At All, recording seven takes with full band instrumentation and John singing the lead vocals.  But they felt the song needed some more work so they turned their attention to Paul's Things We Said Today which they nearly completed by 5:30 PM.

During their 90 minute break, John and Paul worked on the piano instrumental for Any Time At all.  The evening session began at 7:00 PM and The Beatles recorded When I Get Home in its entirety.  At 9:00 PM they turned their attention back to Any Time At All recording four more takes with Take 11 deemed the best.  After both John and Paul's vocals were overdubbed, Paul added piano in the verses and instrumental section as overdubs and John added the final two chord strums at the end of the song as an overdub.  By 10:00 PM, the recording session was complete.  John, Paul and George were present in the studio the following day for some final overdubs.

The Beatles never performed the song on any of their subsequent tours.

John Lennon - Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar (1962 Gibson J160E, 1964 Rickenbacker 325)
Paul McCartney - Vocals, Bass Guitar (1963 Hofner 500/1), Piano (1905 Steinway Vertegrand upright)
George Harrison - Lead Guitar (1963 Rickenbacker 360-12 Fire-glo)
Ringo Starr - Drums (1964 Ludwig Super Classic Black Oyster Pearl)

I love this song. I like the way it opens with that single drumbeat and the chorus. It says, "Pay attention...this is really important!" Then it's repeated just in case her attention has strayed but with a beautiful message like that how could it? :)

I've always liked "Any Time At All". I find some similarities in the instrumental breaks of this song and "Here Comes The Sun".

It's a favorite of mine too.  Pity they never performed it live.  It would have gone something like this...

Love the song.  Great pop/rock song with an infectious beat.  Only sour part is the piano/guitar solo in the middle.  Could have had a great distorted guitar solo, but ended up with elevator music instead.

I like this one a lot. Terrific pop song with great vocals by John. Interesting they never performed it live.

I love the elevator music part, the increasing pulse really fits IMO.  Would love to hear what you had in mind, one of those things that is hard to imagine because what it really is happens to be so embedded in our minds.

As a musician you probably have the ability to imagine different parts in there easier than someone like me.

Love the song in total too.

I feel the same way, blmeanie.  The instrumental is a bit more complicated upon closer inspection.  George is playing harmony on his Rickenbacker 360/12 to Paul's piano melody...

ahhhh ..........but his singing isnt as good..

anyway, I really like this song and the way its recorded, a really great 'John rocker' sang in his best rocker voice

I disagree with todd in that I think the solo is very imaginative as you video shows Baz, distorted guitar solo's are 10 a penny, and I see where Hombre is coming from with Here Comes The Sun, the solo is very similar melodically

Yes, it's a pretty good instrumental which emphasizes the song's mood, Kev.  It also has a chord sequence that doesn't follow any of the song's other elements' chord sequences.  And John and Paul worked it out over their supper break!

Kev, one of the songs you highlighted when you started The Song Of The Week topic was It Won't Be Long which John referenced in regard to Any Time At All.  This 'John' (Nate Bott) always impressed me as coming closest to the young John Lennon...

Here's a live performance by the Beats, an Argentinian tribute to the Beatles.

I so them live in 2005. I remember I didn't have big expectations, but I was impressed when I saw that they played songs of every period of the band, using each corresponding clothing. They're still playing with success around here. I wanted to go to see them with my wife last month, but the tickets were sold out.

I'd never thought of that resemblance of the Anytime At All and Here Comes the Sun instrumental breaks.  They do sound similar.
