there material was a whole lot better after his departure...

maybe...but he was floyd's original lead man and original songwriter, without him there would never been a Pink Floyd

I rank Syd up there with McCartney, Wilson and Lennon.

I really am under the impression that "Piper At Gates Of Dawn" is one of the more "obvious" Floyd albums to own -- for me, it's really the only one to own, although I do have a couple of others. I just tend to prefer Pink Floyd when their name still retained the definite article.

Unfortunately, I have yet to hear his solo stuff..

He's okay. I like some of his solo stuff, but I definitely think it's an aquired taste. Too bad he burned out so early.

PS
I love this forum. This is like the 10th Floyd related thread. I just think that's cool.

Octopus is in the same league as Across the Universe.  Pink Floyd never matched the lyrics and the "fun" of the first album.  Roger's just too grim.  He could never write a song with a line like "That cat's something I can't explain" (Lucifer Sam)--instead he would have turned the cat into some kind of bourgeois symbol of state oppression.

The first album and Syd's solo records have wonder along with the pain.  I agree with Magic Alex.

Syd was like Dylan...maybe he didn't have the greatest singing voice, but he knew how to use it in his advantage to sing great songs...

The album is called More. They did a soundtrack or score for a movie. I LOVE that song. Nobody would ever guess it's Floyd. If they played it on the radio now people would think it was some really cool new band. Dave never sounded like that on any other song!! Very opposite of what people think of when they think of Floyd.
