Turning Down him: Glastonbury 1999!
« on: December 10, 2006, 02:40:46 PM »

GLAST OFF WITH EAVIS!
MY enduring memories from four decades of the Glastonbury Festival.

"Here, festival founder Michael Eavis chooses his most memorable moments from the event he first staged in 1970."

[...]

TURNING DOWN GEORGE HARRISON
"My biggest mistake was not booking George Harrison in 1999.

He had formed a band but I said no to them.

I didn't really fancy an old Beatle coming down and just having a go at that stage it didn't sound very attractive.

But two years later he died and I was so upset about that.

That's the only serious mistake I've made all through Glastonbury's history."

PAUL McCARTNEY
"Paul had phoned up in 2003, but it was too late for him to play.

I had already booked Radiohead and I wouldn't have moved them around for all the tea in China.

I said if he was serious then he could play the following year just phone me after the festival.

He phoned on the Wednesday after the Sunday of that year's festival and got booked for the next year in fact, a call came in from his agent even before everybody had left.

He did a real Beatles set and you wouldn't have known that the other three weren't there."
