well what sort of a guitar is it m8 ? acoustic or electric ? if electric then you will have to sand it down to the wood, thats if you want a nice finish on it .. if not, just sand of the lacker then repaint it .. well i would probably spray the guitar instead of painting it .. but no matter what you do .. you gonna have to sand the lacker off, or the paint or spray wont stick .. if you know what i mean.. its just like glossing a door .. u need a rough surface for the paint to stick..

yeah its electric, and yeah by saying painting i meant spraying it...its the same for me...i would never try and paint a guitar by hand...its like painting a car by hand, it has no sense... :)
Hold up! before your refinish the guitar what kind of guitar is it , who's it made by, and what model is it? You could be about to make a great error. Some guitars are worth a lot of money ie....old Gibsons,Martins, and ...
haha don't worry mate... i'd never try to repaint a precious guitar :)...it's a hybrid brand (aka cheap copy)...
thanks alot for your help guys!!!
another question...what kind of paint and finishing lacker do i use for it?
-
not really sure whay sort of paint ..maybe car spray and do it a few times.. definately not sure about the lacker .. if nobody knows what lacker to use then ill ask someone who will know .. ( guy at the local music shop ) im pretty sure he will know wot to do with it ..

I would really want to paint my Fender in Psychedelic colours, but it would cost a fortune to get it down by a pro.

talking of guitars ill get Apps to take a pic of my Lennon 325 .. and ill post it up :)
-
Might do!!!! lol
-
lol you will DO hehe
-
Stop hoggin!!! lol

Ok then. As long as it is solid wood you can use a good grade paint stripper and this will remove any fininish there leaving the body ready for final sandining and primer or sealer coats, if there is any plastic binding on the body DO NOT GET ANY STIPPER ON IT OR IT WILL MELT, binding has to be sanded. Then you can use any spray paint you want laquer or poly its up to you, but dont mix the two. Stick with either laquer or polyurethane

You got a Rickenbacker 325 also? SWEET! mine is my favorite! Its also how I came up with my id. DUH.
-
nice one ric thats a great piece of info there m8 .. ill bare that in mind as well if i ever decide to strip a guitar :)

Really guys I hope I helped. By the way Lenny you can use the same methods even if you choose to sand instead of strip the guitar. It just takes longer and since I'm totally friggin lazy I like the stripping method. I have had several refins come to the shop and the owners always b!tch at the price I quote, but they are always happy when the see the final product. The only real thing I hate working on are guitars with locking Floyd Rose Tremeloes, They SUCK! :D
-
yeah i know the trems your talking about .. you get them on the more Rock looking guitars... Im not really into the trems.. but if any.. the bigsy's are quite nice .. i wouldnt mind one on my guitar, just for looks more than anything.. but ive heard they go out a of tune alot especially on the 3/4 scale neck ..well come to think of it .. i had one once on a epiphone riviera .. but i didnt have the guitar long as it was a pain in the arse trying re-string it half way through a gig ...so a changed it for a Casino ..

How much does it normally cost Rick, for a profesional job?

I could'nt say...I could find out if need be.

A good refinish job will start at about $350.00 us and go up from there, depending on the job and how much work is involved. This does not mean spot finishing or touch ups, these are alot cheaper and based on the job, this cost is for a total refin. The challenge being, is the guitar worth the cost of refining or if it is a vintage collectible do you want to ruin the value. Most of the time it is a personal choice made by the guitar owner and his wallet. :)
-
Lenny, I love the Bigsby trems, but your right they will go out of tune easily. They are also the coolest looking trems on the market. I have one on my Ric 325 and I love it on the short scale. :)
-
ahhh you have one on a 325 3/4 scale ? ... nice .. and you dont have any problems with it ? .. hmmmm i may have to invest then .. i was told that the bigsby and the 3/4 scale dont get on lol .. but saying that Lennon had a Rickenbacker 325 ( wood finish ) early hamburg guitar .. i saw a bigsby on Ebay and was gonna get it... i wish i bought it now lol .. oh well
-
Yeah my short scale and Bigsby get along fine. If you are going to buy off ebay make sure your getting the right model. Its the flat bottomed horseshoe shaped Bigsby, model E-5 I think. I'll check this weekend a make sure though' they are great if your playing rythm and dont hammer your guitar when you strum or pick. I have the 325 V-58 Hamburg (natural finish) with the Bigsby and a Gretch Tennesseean with a Bigsby along with a later model 325 Miami(black finish)that I reto fittited a Bigsby and gold pickguard and round aluminum knobs to look like John's 325 after he had his first one(natural finish) painted black. It turned out too cool and is still my favorite axe.
-
yeah the one i was looking at was the horseshoe shaped Bigsby...i think one of the other reasons i didnt get it.. was because i wasnt sure how easy they were to fit .. and if i got a pro to do it . it would probably cost a bit ...
-
Probably about $45.00 to $100.00 us. I get about $60.00 plus strings cost to change them out from the standard "R" tail piece or the Rickenbacker ice pick style vibrato to the Bigsby. So, its not really that expensive here, but I dont know what a qualified tech there would charge. Its not really that hard to do yourself. just drilling a couple of holes. The trick is to make sure the strings and Bigsby tail piece are lined up correctly. If you get the correct Bigsby its made to fit directly on your Ric. without modifications being made to the guitar. 8)
-
your twisting my arm with every post you make about the trem hehehe, more than likely i shall get one :)
-
Ok then, here are the models for your guitar. Bigsby B-5 or the B-50 they are the same model just made of diffrent alloys. Good luck let me know what you do :).
-
ok m8 i will do .. the one i have been looking at is the B-5 i think ... it would look great on my guitar as well lol ... :)
-
I thought I'd revive this thread...Miss Riccy's advice! lol
I bought a real old Encore Coaster Strat off Ebay a while back and have finally managed to string her up with a bodged enforced nut, a spring, some t.l.c and she has luckily plugged in a beauty.
Cost me 30 quid (15 was postage). I'm quite pleased with myself. My first electric guitar! lol
-
Thinking about sanding that body down!!! lol

Indica, dude, I hate to break it to you, but your dream guitar is actually a bass.

Wow,... really cool,... and does he sing? ;D
-
Unfortunately not. I just thought it would be cool to paint him on the case since my guitar is actually named after him. The other one is named Joan, but she's in a cloth vinyl case so that would be hard to paint.
-
So you've got a Joan and a Bob,... uhmm... what's your favourite one? Have you noticed that one of them has a male name? :P
Mine is called (by me) Lila (a pun between Leela name and lilac colour)
