I guess you can compare John and Paul's friendship to that of Kirk and Spock, but I'm not sure if you can really compare them each as individuals.  And John is probably way, way too emotional to be like Spock.

Penny Lane is right, John definitely was emotional, even emotionally unstable. And both John and Paul were intellectual.
