Beatles and the Sitar
« on: November 01, 2005, 04:40:15 PM »

Check this out:http://www.icce.rug.nl/~soundscapes/VOLUME04/West_meets_east.html
Seems Yardbirds, Kinks and Beatles all clicked onto the sitar independently, tried to record it and failed (the others tried using classical Indiam musicians). Maybe the other guitarists wouldn't have settled for the sound George got (though Dave Davies has never struck me as a Muso-perfectionist)

Something very similar is said here (in short form at the end of the article) and it's also an interesting view about Georege, The Man:

^Cool. I like the "George was the Forrest Gump of rock" quote. Didn't know that George turned Decca onto the Stones.

Yeah, George was a member of a jury in Philarmonic Hall (liverpool) (The Escorts wonit) and Dick Rowe was beside him so George recommended The Rolling Stones to Decca.(may 10th, 1963)

From the above link: http://www.fufkin.com/columns/lynch/lynch_gh_1.htm

"In 1963, George happened to run into an executive from Decca Records, the label that had shot down The Beatles when they auditioned for the label on New Year

...So, the Stones were even more indebted to the Beatles than I thought! It's right, I'm sure one of you will confirm, that the Stones first single was a flop, but their second - written by Macca - was a hit (I Wanna Be Your Man, considered suitable to be handed to the fourth Beatle)...

Not exactly a hit but an improvement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rolling_Stones_discography

I get the impression that the Stones were based more on image and raw sound rather than quality songs. I confess however, that I've heard only a few Stones songs. But that's my impression.
