Title: Which album are you attached to most?
Post by: on September 28, 2007, 11:06:54 PM
(This question is open for eveyone-but might be more for the older Beatle fans like myself--simply because we had more time to live with each individual LP)

Most of us love ALL their work, for better or worse...BUT which album by The Beatles do you treasure the most in a  sentimental sense..for example, it may bring back fond personal memories for you when you see the cover or hear the songs on this particular album, and so forth...

for me, it's Rubber Soul. Anytime I see the cover I'm literally transported back to late '65 (and early '66 when, at 13, I got the record for my b-day) It's the record that made me even a deeper Beatle nut than I was. R.S. is such a personal album for me....not only is it a beautiful work of art, but it's my personal time machine as well.

Yesterday and Today ( even though it was a U.S release ) does it for me. My older bother had the record albums, and I used to get into his collection and that was the one I played over and over. Of course later I got my own collection, first on tapes then later cds. But, of course with the cds Y&D was not released.

and that reminds me, Pasta...wouldn't ya just love getting the original "Butcher's" cover of "Y&T"?...I never did get my hands on one(but hope to someday)..I just had the standard "Paul in steamer chest" cover like everybody else had in 1966...but even THAT is nostalgic now...

I like to mix them up. Probably Abbey Road is my favorite Beatles album. Hard to say. I generally play whatever track(s) I'm in the mood for.

I got into the Beatles in April 2006 when I heard Love Me Do play in a restaurant. So after that, I dug out my dad's "One" album and listened to the whole thing straight through. That was it for me, I fell in love with that CD and the Beatles. It was the first one I ever listened to, and it got me hooked, and I pretty much listened to it every day from then on. I remember that a lot of the songs sounded very familiar, having listened to them without knowing it in the car on vacation or something years before. So when I listen to the One album, I like to think about the very first time and that whole time period when I was just learning everything new about the Beatles. I loved the booklet inside, and was instantly trying to learn the lyrics to all the songs. That album did me in. Not necessarily my favorite, but I'm probably attached to it the most. There's a difference, I guess 'cause it was the album that brought the Beatles into my life.

But as for the original albums, Rubber Soul and Abbey Road were the first ones I ever bought a little over a year ago. I loved them both instantly, and couldn't stop listening to them. I thought they were the greatest. And also last summer, I hadn't bought A Hard Day's Night yet, but found that my dad had the record so I listened to that every day, even though it was very bad quality 'cause our needle isn't too great. I was into my whole Hard Day's Night kick, watching the movie endlessly and replaying the album over and over and over... I also have some fond memories of sitting on the couch on a snow day off of school and just listening to the Beatles almost all day, watching the snow fall. Heaven...

i also remember sitting out in the sum with my brother each eating an entire half a watermelon (a lot for 3/4 year old to eat!) and chewing (and swallowing ) a large amount of watermelon flavored gum while having peppers blasting. it is just a memory now.

When it moves at all. ;D  But I can't imagine the Apple/EMI guys passing up a chance to cash in with a couple of extra compilations. But maybe the example Paul's McCartney Collection offers some slight hope.

As to the question of which album...? Dr Ebbetts' UK singles collection. It's got the A and B sides of all The Beatles' singles in the original mixes, expertly transferred from 45s. It's The Beatles as they presented themselves on what was the major vinyl medium of the day. :)

White Album all the way. the funny thing about it is that it was one of the last Beatles alubms I got into. I got into the band through my dad's old LPs (Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, Yellow Submarine, and Let It Be). then I started buying some CDs like Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Magical Mystery Tour. and this was my Beatles collection for many years. remember, this is before the anthology and the internet so I didn't really know the Beatles' discography or anything like that...though I have heard my dad mention the name 'White Album' as well as the 'number 9' stuff before. so when I came across the White Album in a store one day....dude....I WAS SHOCKED! I looked at the back of the CD, and saw there were 30 songs on it ,most of which I have never heard of. Rocky Raccoon, Helter Skelter, Blackbird and Revolution were familiar titles, but the rest were all brand new to me. I still remember my first run through it. I flipped my lid half way through Back in the USSR...and I really haven't been the same since.

For me, back in 1975-76 when I first discoved the Beatles, it has to be the collection, "The Beatles 1962-1966".  That was my first ever Beatles record and I wore it out on my little record player.  Now............I just LOVE "LOVE" cd.  To me, it's the Beatles brought back "live and well" in the 21st century..........what they would sound like now........

I prefer their "rock & roll" songs more.  Their earlier stuff.  I mean don't get me wrong, I love all their music earlier and later.  That song to me is their best..I just love the way it sounds, the story... I could picture the whole thing in my mind.  And I can break it down and dance to that song!  I never get tired of it no matter how many times I hear it.  And I LOVE the count-in in the beginning.  ONE TWO THREE FAH!!!  Just hearing that alone gets me pumped up!!!  8)

lets go through this.

1 - just because it resparked my interest for the Beatles, we got it originally for my dad's birthday, I've since taken over it.
Let It Be - it reminds me of driving with my dad on Sunday mornings and driving around the city after a close friend died
White Album - a friend of mine lent it to me when I was going through a really hard time
Sgt Peppers - my parents got me it for my 17th birthday and it has since remained my favorite album
Beatlesmania/The Beatle's Second Album/Long Tall Sally/Help!/Something New/Beatles '65/Twist And Shout - my dad played these albums while my sister and I were growing up.

BUT which album by The Beatles do you treasure the most in a  sentimental sense..

Oh, goodness.  Great question.  I ask your indulgence:

First place: Beatles VI and Meet the Beatles.  A tie.  I've mentioned on other threads -- the harmonies on This Boy and Yes It Is -- I thought they were written by computers.  Not a bright boy.  But I couldn't conceive how that could be done by a mere person.

Then, in flawed order:
MMT -- the first album I ever bought (around 1970?) after I scratched the **** out of my brother's.
Help! -- Dwight Northrup had it, and we started our band because of it and the film.
Revolver -- Side 1 is sent from above.

I think I was then given 62-66 and 67-70 for Christmas and my birthday (weeks later) when they came out.  My brothers didn't have all the old ones, so I heard "Drive My Car" and "Old Brown Shoe" and others for the first time.

Then my brother came home from the Army, bringing Pepper, Abbey Road, White Album, and Let It Be.  Good Lord.  Those years of discovery ... I've very seldom experienced anything so ... meaningful.

Amazing stuff.  Thanks for the chance to go back through it.  Peace, wal

The White Album, just because there are so many great tracks, including Blackbird (my second fave song after I Feel Fine), Mother Nature's Son, Everybody...Monkey (my nine year old daughter's favorite Beatles song), Dear Prudence, I Will.  Revolver would be a very close second.

Revolver.

When she was about 14 my school friend broke her leg, (horrid accident, I was there when it happened, v traumatic) and the whole class clubbed together to get her something. I was nominated to get her something she'd like. I knew just the thing! We had enough to get her a cassette of Revolver, so she could listen to it in hospital. She was really pleased! Since then it's been a great album for me. I love the cover, great art. The songs are sooooo good, George was stepping out from behind John and Paul, there's so much wonderful music on there. I think it points where they were going as well.

I don't think that I can say I am more attached to one album over the rest.  I have different reasons why I am attached to different ones.

When I was about 9, I got my first cd player.  I saved up my own money and bought a Beatles album because I heard my dad play some of the songs on a turntable.  I went to the store, still not too familiar with the group, and somehow ended up with Please Please Me.  I think it must have been due to Twist and Shout.  I remember later finding out that album was the first they released, so I thought it was cool that it was the first I bought.  I still have that original PPM that I purchased that day and it has been played to death- but I would not part with it willingly.

On the other hand, I remember buying Revolver as well.  The album cover I thought then- as I do now- was the best I had ever seen.  I used to love looking at it all the time.  I eventually got a bigger than door-sized poster of the cover and it hung up for years.  The other thing about Revolver, is that I still regard it as my favorite album, and maybe their best.

The other albums that comes to mind are Abbey Road and THE BEATLES.  There is just something special about each.  Abbey Road is something I listen to and it makes me feel good-  despite being the end of the road for the band.  On the polar opposite, I may listen to THE BEATLES more than any other because it is so darn intriging to me.  It stays fresh to me and seems to also provide me with a surprise even thought I have played it hundreds of times.

I love those albums, but the Beatles canon is so great that many of my favorite songs are not on there.

Abbey Road. The first Beatles CD I owned. It's just perfection, from beginning to end. It just makes me happy.  (Even Octopus's Garden) :)

Probably Sgt Pepper. It was my second Beatles album. My first was Beatles 1, but I am more fond of Sgt Pepper. And also because next to Abbey Road, it is one of the best. I just adore that one!!!! lol. But I love them all.

For me it's The White Album. It's been my "favorite album of all time" for a long time now and it's the one I can always go back to and hear something new in. I love the variety. I love that they let everything go. I even love that I don't love some of the songs (I'm not a fan of "Don't Pass Me By" for example) ... There's something perfect in it's imperfection.

Even though i'm not a big fan of it, i've been giving Revolver a few whirls recently, i'm still
trying to figure out why people love it so much, still trying to think how Revolver has seem
to have taken over Sgt Pepper as their best album, i still love Rubber Soul more though.

I think song for song Revolver is far stronger than Pepper. And Revolver is less self-conscious than Pepper, which was trying really hard to be a "drug album" whereas revolver is just a collection of great songs. If I have a criticism of Revolver is that it's a bit too eclectic - but it did set the template for the rest of their career.
I prefer Rubber Soul because the album has a "feel" to it. And it's the last (and best???) time that they sound like a band rather than a collection of individuals.

Being from Liverpool I always loved The Beatles. I pestered my nan to buy me the Help! LP and she bought me a copy from NEMS in Liverpool around 1973/74. I still have it and wouldnt part with it for the world. Brings back a lot of memeories for me.

I started out liking the Beatles when I was ten so I guess I don't fit the '65 crowd or anything. Pretty much each album for me has some sentimental meaning for me because I never went out and bought all the albums at once rather one album that would last me for several months. It took me about 8 years to complete my collection because I preferred to listen to one album and hear every nuance that I could hear.  Revolver is my favorite album since it was the first album my dad introduced me to and I was spell bound literally. It's kind of funny now that I think of it of a little boy in the 4th grade coming home after school and putting on his headphones and trying to understand "Doctor Robert",etc.

Beatles 1 was the first I bought so I guess that has a lot of sentimentality for me. . . reminds me of summer 2001, right before George died. . .

Help! Reminds me of the summer of 2007 that I spent in Paraguay. I learned a lot about myself and people in general. Awesome bass playing. . .

Now that I'm an adult, Please Please Me means a lot to me since it's what I was listening to and bought for the first time when I met my girlfriend. Every time I listen to it I go back to the days when we were so interested in each other (we still are of course) but everything was so new, just like listening to this album for the first time, they're first breakthrough.

Finally, Beatles for Sale got me out of tough times, being lonely (before I met my girlfriend), kind of what the review says, it's a sad album, but they're that tinge of optimism and hope that makes it so beautiful.  People tend to hate on this album so much saying who knows what but I love it and makes me feel good especially "Every Little thing"

Paul's bass playing especially in the older days was very underrated. PPM is amazing and so is Help!.

A Hard Day's Night - bring back so many memories before I even took my music seriously, and discovered the more progressive Revolver, White album etc.

This is currently my favourite album ever, such a fun album, and then stone - cold classics with Anytime At All and Things We Said Today.

I'm most attached to Please Please Me.  I can't deny that each album displays their growth, cleverness, and continuing development as people and songwriters, but funnily enough, the album that gives me the most enjoyment is their first.  I think it represents the period of The Beatles where they felt the least pressure from the public and everyone else...  I imagine them playing these songs in The Cavern and The Top Ten Club and places like that, a little earlier than when they actually recorded the record, with their pre-moptop haircuts and the leather outfits, and their youthful chirpiness...  just kids reflecting the music and the energy of the musicians they admired, hoping for something to change, but just loving the hell out of the music they played and the thrill they got off it.  I listen to Please Please Me and it's just full of that sparkle I know Brian saw in them when he first saw them, that spark that made him know they were special.  The spark that was free to be whatever it wanted to be, before the music industry and the crazed public swallowed them up and pushed them into a bit of a creative and emotional corner.  They're all great lads, and I think Please Please Me displays their talent for songwriting, their edge as musicians, and their drive to make good music.  I Saw Her Standing There, Boys, Please Please Me, There's A Place and Twist And Shout really push the energy right up for me, making singalongs and extreme dancing irresistable!  The way they sing and scream and play really forces you to listen to how good they are.  Misery, Chains, Love Me Do, Do You Want To Know A Secret and A Taste Of Honey are great middle-of-the-road songs that you can really enjoy, and for quite a while when I was new to the record, I was hearing and feeling different things in each of them on every listen.  Anna (Go To Him), P.S. I Love You and Baby It's You are great slowies that give me such a warm feeling of affection for the boys and I think shows off more of their vocal talents, John's in particular in Baby It's You, and the low harmonic structures they weaved in P.S. I Love You.  And my personal fave from the album, Ask Me Why, is just an absolute dream.  Even though there are Beatles songs I love more, I just turn to jelly at even the first notes of Ask Me Why!  It's just the mind-blowingly close harmonies, using the whole "I love you-woo-woo" thing, the sweet chord changes, the overall atmosphere of the song, and John's gorgeous vocals...  It just melts my heart!

Phew!  Didn't mean to ramble on that much...  shouldn't have been so damn talented, should they?  ;)

xxx

Well, for sentimental reasons, Help! attracts me most because it's the album that sealed the deal on my love of The Beatles. Embarrassingly enough, I only truly got into them October of this past year after buying The Beatles Rock Band. I really loved all of the music in the game so I went on the web and investigated (I visited these forums many times before joining, reading nearly every thread there was trying to find more and more out about the band). So then I watched A Hard Day's Night and Help! and I particularly laughed at AHDN, but it was the music in Help! that made me enjoy it so much. So I admittedly downloaded the whole album from a torrent sight and fell in love with it. Then I downloaded the rest of the catalogue and made due with that until I got the Remasters. So while Help! is not my favorite album, it is the one that really hooked me on The Beatles.

I really like there early stuff a lot, I don't know why it just seems happier to me. And A Hard Day's Night is the first Beatle movie I ever saw, so almost all of the songs on that album are my favorite. I also really enjoy Help! as well, I just like the earlier stuff more for some reason. I can't really explain why, I just heard all the early stuff last year. Before I'd only heard their older work, like Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, and Let It Be. But I would probably have to pick A Hard Days Night.

Although it's not my favourite Beatles album to listen to (that would be The White Album, closely followed by Revolver then Rubber Soul), The Beatles at The Hollywood Bowl is probably the album that I have the greatest sentimental attachment to.
It was the first record I bought with my own money, back in 1977 when I was 10 years old.
I listened to it constantly after buying it and spent ages going over the inner sleeve, which had the artwork and track listings for every Beatles LP.
When I listen to it now it takes me straight back to 1977!! And every time I hear it I marvel at what it must have been like to see The Beatles live in the 60s.

I would hesitate between Let it Be and Abbey Road.. Both came out short (and a bit past) my 13 years BD… and I rediscovered Abbey Road a few years later, when as an older teenager, I realized there was a B side to it. Both were albums that I consciously remember the sleeve showing up in record stores, under the arms of older friends walking around and such, at the specific time of their release. My memories of the White Album and Sergeant Pepper’s are somewhat more sketchy than those of Rubber Soul, for instance (perhaps because beatlemania more or less peaked around 1966-1967).

The White Album.
It reminds me of the summer of the year I truly discovered The Beatles. I'd take walks on a sunny day and play it on my iPod. It was my album of that summer.
Then again... Abbey Road too. I had that album since 7th grade on vinyl and didn't listen to it until I first got into The Beatles because I never had a record player, so when I bought it on CD, I held the vinyl cover in my hands and finally listened to to album I had owned and wondered about for years... and once I heard 'Golden Slumbers'... that was the first time a Beatles song made me emotional.

You know, I'm not much older than you but I find this so strange. Part of the whole Beatles experience for me was handling the CDs (and sometimes the LPs), changing the albums on my stereo, and looking at the cover art. I can't imagine having that same experience with an iPod.

Ah! This is so hard, but if I were to choose and album with The Beatles on it, I would have to choose "LOVE" only because it's a good compilation of all of their good songs. However, if I had to choose an actual Beatles composed album, it would have to be Abbey Road.

Why ?  (just curious)  :)

Beatles '65 was my favorite Capitol album and BFS is that and more with a couple of exceptions. I just think it's a cool album.

And, yes, I even like Mr. Moonlight.
