The Beatles were the first to use a new tactic of dealing with the press. They subverted the system of polite empty answers and careful reservations and poured humorous sarcastic replies, which were rather straightforward and honest. Unlike others they didn`t say, Yes, one should do this and that, drink milk and behave well (to serve an example to teenagers). They said, Yes, we drink whiskey and cola.

It doesn't matter whether or not the Beatles did any of these things first because they did them best.

I think you're mistaken here, Andy. I think they were fully aware of what they were doing. They tried to make each album sound different than the one before for example.

Weren't they the first "pop" band (at least that I know of) that used a piccolo trumpet and piccolo flute in the same song?

well i think it was George that said they were making it all up as they went along, things just changed naturally, they didn't think hard
about it, but yes i see what you mean on how they wanted to make a better album after the last. they wern't thinking in 1963, ok we're
goin to grow moustaches and were crazy uniforms in 4 years time. it just happened as like natural changes happen in life. not many bands were changing their image every couple of months in the 60's.apart from evrone growing their hair etc..

Another first for everybody! So, for the first time in music history the song lyrics were printed on the back sleeve of Sgt. Pepper.
The Beatles are unbeatable.

First to put drummer on a riser? (Read that one somewhere).

That was done before.  Here's Gene Krupa with Benny Goodman and with his own band:

The Killer making his third Steve Allen Show appearance in 1957.  His drummer, Russ Smith, is on a riser here too:

Surely they did this simultaniously (sp) with most bands that spanned the sixties - the Stones, Dylan, The Who,The Kinks etc. Surely it was a sixties, not a Beatles thing.

A topic that often comes up is what did the Beatles do that were truly firsts. Often they're credited with things that they weren't first with but, as they were the biggest band, they got more attention for than others. For instance they weren't the first to do a concept album despite Sgt Peppers being often cited as such. They also weren't the first to leave singles off albums.

I thought it would be interesting if our collective wisdom could be brought to bear to come up with something like a definitive list. No trivial thing will be too small  ;D

Some I think will also be applicable only to the pop/rock genre.  Things they did might have been done in classical or jazz realms, but that doesn't mean using them first in a pop/rock context isn't of some significance.

Anyway, here's a few to kick off. Bear in mind part of the point of this is to be corrected if a proposed first is incorrect. Sometimes the counter example will be even more interesting.

First backwards instruments to be used on a rock recording (Revolver)

First intentional use of feedback on a rock recording ( I feel fine)

First stadium concert (Shea)

First printing of lyrics on a record cover (Sgt Peppers)

Now here's one I'm not sure is a first but I was wondering. Was A Hard Day's Night the first No1 album to be entirely self-penned by the performer? I know this is a tricky one as the US version was a soundtrack rather than the UK studio album.  But it would have been No 1 in the Us if released in the UK form so I'm happy to fudge this.

Nice topic, Moog. I'll be interested to see what else all the greater minds than mine come up with.

I'm going to merge this topic with a topic by the same name we had a few years ago.  This is a great topic for discussion.
