American singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon recorded Needles And Pins, written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono, in early 1963...

Later that year, she wrote and recorded When You Walk In The Room...

These two songs influenced the Merseybeat scene.  Liverpool groups scrambled to find and record her compositions.

Most noteworthy were The Searchers who, in 1964, had hits with both Needles And Pins and When You Walk In The Room...

Though The Beatles never recorded her songs, they did ask her to open for them during their 1964 tour...

When You Walk In The Room

Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas - Every Time That You Walk In The Room

Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas   1964

This was never released as a single perhaps because The Searchers had a hit with it.

Great thread! I really only knew two of her songs; it's nice to hear more. Those pictures of her playing Monopoly with Paul are very sweet. Somehow I wouldn't have expected that!

Interesting stuff Barry, but i'll be true to form and say that her video for Needles and Pins was one of the most aggravating things I can remember watching for some time. I wasnt sure if she was having an epileptic fit or if she was trying to bang those guys.

She still has a Beatles connection. In Los Angeles and I think on Sirius XM Radio, there is a weekly Beatles Radio show. She compiles and reports the weekly Beatles news.

The host of the show is Chris Carter (formerly of Dramarama). The name of the show is "Breakfast With The Beatles".

Yeah, Todd.  That was her style.  She must have felt really constrained when they put her on smaller risers...

Liz Phair did a good Jackie DeShannon on an episode of American Dreams...

Gary, for years we had Breakfast With The Beatles on WCBS FM here in the New York City area.  More recently, WCBS gave us Beatles For Breakfast with Harry Harrison on Saturday mornings...

But the show was discontinued when Harry Harrison retired in 2005.

Today, WCBS FM gives us Beatles Wednesday:  http://wcbsfm.radio.com/category/beatles-wednesday/

I don't have Sirius, but my sister does.  I'll have to catch that show!
