Which Beatles movie for non-Beatles friends?
« on: October 11, 2008, 01:19:27 AM »

If you had to show one Beatles movie to your friends who aren't Beatles fans, which film would you choose and why? :)

I'd show them the anthology series instead...More of a storyline for non-fans.  ;)

Hmmmm.....That's a good question.  I think maybe Help!, although AHDN is my favorite, I think non Beatle fans will find Help! cute and funny.

AHDN because it's one of the all time classics.

Yes, i think Help! would be better for non-Beatle people. its story is, well, more of a story than AHDN.(i love that movie as well, but for these purposes i dont think it would be as good.) Yellow Submarine might be a little, too, strange for people who are just being introduced to the Beatles, though little kids might just like looking at all the pretty colors....

i suppose it somewhat depends on the audience, age, understanding of subtle but funny jokes, all that type of stuff.

Haaa.  While that would be an ideal choice (in our minds, anyway), I can't imagine strapping down my non-fan friends that long for their Beatles education.  I don't think they'd be too appreciative...tsk.  ;D

I am torn between showing "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!"  I honestly think "AHDN" is a stronger film, and it's a nice way of getting introduced to the Beatles' music and their quirky personalities.  But "Help!" is a lot of fun with its goofy plotline, although I think it starts to drag towards the end.   :-/

Yea, anthology would be too long to sit through, plus it wont mean much to the non beatle friends.
Yellow Submarine i think is a good one to get non beatle friends into the beatles. I mean, its a cartoon, colourful, cool story line.... After that they will be ready to watch Help!

I think I would choose either AHDN of Help! because they're both really cute and funny. Maybe Yellow Submarine if they were in a little kid mood.

When my non-Beatles friends saw AHDN they didn`t like the film at first. They thought it too weird. So I would suggest Help! but reminding them about the fact that the film was made in the 60s, when different villains were popular in the cinematography.

AHDN is kind of like the day in the life of a Beatle, so I think non-beatle fans would not like it...Just a thought.  Help! I think is a better choice because it has more of a story line, but as someone mentioned before, it does seem to be a bit long.  I still think Help! is the best choice though.  Yellow Sub and MMT...not so much. Just my opinion though.

Non-Beatles fans wouldn't like AHDN. It's pretty much just focused on the guys. You'd have to know their personalities to get all the jokes. I'd say you're better off with Help! or Yellow Submarine, and keep them the hell away from Magical Mystery Tour.

Hahaha, Mairi "keep them the hell away from MMT" (lol)

I agree with those who went for Help - that would be my choice too. As FNU said, it's got more of a story (as in a not-necessarily-Beatles-focused story), and it's really funny too, with the humour/jokes being easy to understand. I think it would make a good introduction to The Beatles :)
If the person likes cartoons, Yellow Sub would be a good one too, because of the story, the interesting cartoon techniques, etc.
And yeah, I'd say not MMT, and not Let It Be.... maybe later, once they become fans after watching Help (grin)

I beg to differ here...  I considered myself a "non-Beatles fan" until I saw "AHDN."  That was the movie that converted me forever!  (inlove1)

I agree, however, with those who have said no "MMT" or "LIB."  "LIB" is too heavy for newbies and "MMT" is too off-the-wall.  Hubby likes the artsy strangeness, but I have a hard time sitting through it.  At least both have great music, though!

the pot-smoking crowd would probably enjoy this. They'd probably enjoy Yellow Submarine even more.

^When I was babysitting my mommy's coworker's little girl, we watched Yellow Submarine and she LOVED it. But then, I got tired so I handed her over to my mom.

Just an update...

Well, I finally showed a Beatles movie to my friends.  I had both "AHDN" and "Help!" with me and I let them choose which one they wanted to see, and they wound up picking "AHDN."  I think they did like it, and they were even singing along and dancing to songs that they knew and liked!  So that was a cool thing.

It was also funny because my friend looked at a picture of the Beatles and asked me which one was Paul, my favorite Beatle.  I automatically said, "He's the cute one" ('cuz I'm so biased, ya know), but she pointed to John instead!  So apparently she thinks he's the cutest.  :P  My other friend seems to think George is the handsomest, and she called Paul a "cute chipmunk."  Ahhh!  Well, we all have different tastes.  ;)

All in all, it was a nice evening and I'm really grateful I got an opportunity to share my hobby with friends.
