I'm an aspiring lyricist with a bright future who will more than likely have about 1000 songs by the end of year because it's not too hard for me to write lyrics. I don't consider myself in the same leagues as John Lennon & Bob Dylan when it comes to lyrics but I think I'm pretty good if I say so myself. I had a few bumps in the road in my personal life which weren't drastic or anything just mostly materialistic & less personal or financial. That's all part of the past I can proudly say which is why I'm ready to get into the music business & become rich & famous. I look at some of my peers in my age group like Jon Bon Jovi, Tommy Lee & Bret Michaels who were cracking me up during the 80's with mostly crappy rock for the kids at the time & are only marginally relevant today. I personally think I can leave these losers in the dust when it comes to my creativity while I'm not a singer or musician but I have what it takes to be successful. I was raised on 60's/70's rock & my love of music is passionate & I'm looking for that special lady at the moment. I might be 41 years old but that guy from the country/ rock/rap duo Big & Rich named Big Kenny is going to be the same age as me this year so I don't have any problems.

do crow about it just DO IT.

PROVE IT.it seems those who talk the most go nowheres,man......

Well, post a few lyrics then... I'm curious.

Too bad though that pretty much every self-respecting rock singer or band writes their own material nowadays. I don't think you can make much of a career nowadays by only writing lyrics.

Even though I'm not exactly a fan of the people you mentioned, it's a fact that these people had what it took to be succesful. It doesn't matter if you like them or not, you can't deny that they can sing, write their own material, and have the looks/charisma/image it takes to sell millions of records. You can never become a bigger star than those people if your only talent is writing lyrics. Be realistic.

It's a great point Bicster...the other dimensions that is the machine of the corporate music monster require so much. I tell you what though...Wayne's got the self belief goin good. ;) lol

Not in the same league as Lennon or Dylan?
listen, your not in the same ball park son.
You may write good lyrics, but without music, its just poetry.
And Poetry is a hard craft to learn.

I'm not going let anybody steal my lyrics which is why I will not print them for all of you to see.

What talent has Jon Bon Jovi got anyway since he's an average songwriter, an average frontman & an average performer who made it on his classic haircut during the 80's with only one great classic rock album Slippery When Wet with his band Biscuit_Power?

You don't know where I'm at concerning my lyrics or where I'm headed at this moment anyway even though I'm not Lennon or Dylan while it's all poetry in the first place with music behind it IndicaWalrus. BTW, you're not going to bring me down to your sarcastic level.

Im not trying to bring you down.
How old are you?
Do you Play in a Band?
Do you play an instrument?
Does your lyrics reflect anything?

most of the above is very true (age, band ..)...but playing an instrument isn't a requirement...look at Jim Morrison, he wasn't a musician but a singer and he's one of the greatest poets ever...you need a good voice though...

Here Wayne....A simple tip....Post the lyrics you have written to yourself in a sealed envelope...Then lock away in a safe place...Then you'll be able to post them up on the forum without fear of any copyright violation. Then you can silence your critics once and for all. ;)
i think we're all curious to see those lyrics... :)

maybe he just doesn't want people to see them. Unfortunately, if your afraid to shre them it seems you lack the charisma that is required. Also, your going to some day have to share it if you want to be famous and big.
Turst Us. we won't steal it.

I don't like Bon Jovi, but he sells millions of records so it's an undeniable fact that he must be doing SOMETHING very right...
-
And I'm not trying to bring you down or anything, I just think you should be realistic and see that it's impossible to become someone in the music industry if writing lyrics -even if you're the best there is- is the only thing you can do. Since there are thousands of people out there that are just as ambitious as you that can write lyrics AND write music AND perform that music.
-
..exactly.
It only gets harder as the Industry gets older.
-
how many only lyricists can you name? i can name maybe 3
Beirnie Taupin
I think it was Rodgers who was lyrics, maybe Haammerstein i dunno
umm Goffin?

Wayne L.
You stick to your lyrics. I've been in nashville now for almost twenty years and there are plenty of guys around who do nothing but write lyrics. My buddy Jim Brown had some nice music lyring around until his friend Don Rollins showed him some lyrics titled "Five O'Clock Somewhere." Now he's got a number one song.
I think the pendulum is actually swinging away from the purely singer-songwriter thing. There are more big-time artists who are "created" by producers who write or work with teams of writers. The producer is becoming the star again.
I post my lyrics and have clips of my songs on my website www.phoebeclaire.com.
As long as you have them copyrighted, you shouldn't have any problems with theft. And anyhow, the good writers are good enough to steal your stuff and not violate the copyright so you might as well get your stuff out anyway.
I've got a song about the Sgt. Pepper Album cover on my website now. Also "I Saw John Kennedy Today" which is getting alot of downloads. I've got a song about Pete Best that I need to demo up properly.
Anyhow the internet is a great place to try material out. See what flies and what doesn't.
P.S. as far as lyricists go, Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead) is a good model. He collaborated with Jerry and company on their most classic songs.

A good manager, a good haircut, a good image & living on his only one great classic rock album SWW even though his hardcore fans would disagree.

while I'm not a singer or musician but I have what it takes to be successful.
so what are your plans then wayne ? do you just want to be a lyricist and just write lyrics for other bands ? you stated that you cant sing or play, but you want to become rich and famous..as it stands it dont look like a BRIGHT FUTURE ! so if you want to be the Beirnie Taupin type, then your gonna need your Elton John ! I hope you dont take this the wrong way wayne.. im not having a pop at you .. im just curious :)
-
coz i know how bloody hard it is to break into the music industry.. IVE TRIED and so has Apple Beatle ....

I think you are incredibly narrow-minded Wayne.
How old are you? 8?
-
I like to think of myself more as a Bernie Taupin since I'm a lyricist & not a singer or musician.
Bernie Taupin would be nothing without Elton John. You don't have an Elton John.
-
Wow, that must be one of the coolest sentences I ever came up with: "You don't have an Elton John". That should be on a t-shirt or something. :)
-
I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but if you haven't made it by now, you'll probably never make it. Now, more than ever, the entertainment industry is youth-obsessed.
-
No offence Mairi but in Wayne's defence here.....'Making it in the music business' is a loose term...Great words are great words. One decent set of lyrics published and the royalty cheques never stop coming in.
There are many avenues of music that are'nt youth obsessed, although if it's huge glory and wealth your seeking then you are absolutely right.

Can you share some of your lyrics with us Wayne?

How much fun is this!.
Those peers you talk about, they went out there and did it when they were young.
Yeah... A has-been is in my book still a lot better than a wannabe...
