  • What would the The Beatles be without Ringo?
Ringo's Drumming On Drive My Car
« on: January 08, 2005, 04:44:58 AM »

Does anyone else feel that on "Drive My Car" Ringo's drumming is a little eratic and not up to his usual excellent metronome like standards?  When I listen to it lately it just sounds like he's having a hard time trying to keep the beat.  What does everyone else think?

That never occurred to me, frankly. But it's a SUPERB opening to RUBBER SOUL, don't you think? On a par with Paul's "1, 2, 3, fuh!" to open PLEASE PLEASE ME.

i cant say that ive ever been aware that Ringo has been struggling with the tempo on Drive My Car ... and ive studied that song due to the fact that myself and Apple Beatle play that song in our Beatle Tribute Band...and im pretty sure that if that was the case then im sure it would have been mentioned....

Oh don't get me wrong I love "Drive My Car" and Ringo will always be the greatest drummer ever to me but something in his drumming in that song just seems off.  Like in every verse when he gets to the lines:

"But you can do something in between"

"But I can show you a better time"

"But I've found a driver and that's a start"

Also the last bit of the solo in these areas it seems that he's not keeping the beat exactly.

Nah, Lenny Pane hit it right on the head - just having a bit of fun with the time sig.

Listen to Money by Pink Floyd to get an idea of it.  That song is in 7/8 time (rare!) and if you keep the beat your self from when the drums start, you'll find that the drumming goes "off", but eventually comes back around again.  (The difference comes with the 2 ride cymbal strikes at the end of the bassline)

Shows you how clever Ringo was with such hardly noticeable things. 8)

That 'You Can Do Something..... bit is wierd cos they are all clever at who is playing the stabs and filling the pockets. Also slight hangs before launching into the chorus's....Masters...I love playing this song.
Without listening to it at the mo, it strikes me that it changes every time.
I know that the licks played on bass and guitar are kinda of Unison and then on last one it's just guitar.
Also the guitar and bass licks are really slightly different in the first verse...slighty straighter and then groove up a bit as the track progresses.
I'm Gonna have to have a listen tomorrow as it's gettin late and I may have to modify my breakdown.
For anyone wanting to perv on this, try panning to the left and to the right to see what I mean.
I think also with many of their recordings, Beatles went for the 'take with the vibe' rather than the most accurate tempo....Something I agree with wholeheartedly....LEGENDS!!!! And thanks to slickety slick judgment from the Godlike george MArtin. :)

I think maybe it's a fill thing. The drums in that section are very syncopated, maybe every once in awhile Ringo had trouble with keeping time that way (listen to the Thank You Girl outtakes for the drum fills at the end of the song). It seems to be a rare occurrence where Ringo screws up the time signature. Sometimes I think John lived in a time signature all his own.

In an interview "Paul" indicated that the "Drive My Car" song was the hardest one ever to record! I think Ringo's drumming was quite good after all the takes it took to record the song.
