Title: Vocals on extremely separate channels
Post by: Hombre_de_ningun_lugar on September 07, 2012, 01:44:35 AM: This may sound amateurish and unprofessional these days, but I love when back in the 60's one vocal was recorded on one channel and other vocals were recorded on the other channel. I think that independence of the vocals gave the songs a fresh sound, as if it were a live experience. These are some examples that come to my mind (please listen to the songs with headphones):

"Rain" (The Beatles, 1966): John Lennon (lead vocal) on left channel and Paul McCartney & George Harrison (backing vocals) on right channel.

The oldies station that I used to listen to in the late 80's seemed to have a problem with this song and The Mamas and The Papas' "I Saw Her Again". Only one channel would play and it used to drive me nuts. The first few times I thought I'd blown a speaker or something.

I just got that album not too long ago. It was part of a huge lot I got at an auction. People looked at me like I was crazy as I schlepped 100+ albums out the door. Oh well...one person's trash is my treasure. :)

This came up on Pandora the other day. I pushed the left side of my headphones off my ear to hear what my daughter was saying to me and it really was amazing to hear what was going on in my right ear! I never did put the left side back on until it was over. ;D

Yeah, "For What It's Worth" is particularly interesting in stereo. I also love listening to those harmonies on the right channel.
