Title: A Hard Day's Night to get a Cinema & DVD & Blue Ray Release Summer 2014
Post by: Euan Buchan on March 19, 2014, 08:40:13 AM
The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night is to be re-released in cinemas and on DVD.

The 1964 film , which follows a day in the life of the band as Beatlemania is in full swing, has been fully restored and will be in cinemas and available to download on July 4. A limited edition DVD and Blu-ray release will follow on July 21.

Directed by Richard Lester and written by Alun Owen, the film also starred Anna Quayle, Bob Godfrey, Robin Ray, Lionel Blair and Patti Boyd.

Next week (March 20), the piano played by John Lennon and Paul McCartney while filming Help! will go up for auction. The pair used the 1907 Bechstein Concert Grand to compose the title track to the 1965 film and was used to compose 'Yesterday'. It has been valued at £50,000 by Omega Auctions, and will be sold in Liverpool.

The bfi on the Southbank (London) is showing 'A Hard Day's Night' over two weeks in July from 3rd to 17th.
There appear to be 33 screenings so, even given the World Cup, there doesn't seem too much excuse for missing it.

'Sorry we hurt your field, Mister.'
Major result!

I was always under the impression that the song was solely written by Lennon overnight, once the title had been decided on

Man, would I be happy if I could see this in a theater. The only city that is near me is an hour and a half away and I am very eager to see if it's coming there.

We're about the same from the nearest modern theater. I'll probably see it on Netflix sometime in the future!

Just to clarify, the piano which appeared in Help! was not the Bechstein Concert Grand which sold at auction.  A Bösendorfer Grand Piano was used in the Ticket To Ride scene filmed at Obertauern in the Austrian Alps...

I'm not sure yet if it'll be playing in my city, but I'm going to be on this darn cruise and will miss it (and the Twilight Zone marathon, adding insult to injury)   >:(  . I would be so thrilled to see AHDN on the big screen.

Oh, well, at least I'll be able to readily get the DVD.

The various comments above have convinced me that if you can get to see it on the big screen it'll be worth your effort.

I've never seen AHDN at the cinema (what a disgrace!) and, I have to admit, I think I've only seen it on 3 or 4 occasions. Bizarrely, however, I must have seen 'Magical Mystery Tour' on least 100 occasions.....mainly, of course, for Paul's tank top!

All this just makes me more determined to clear a space in July to see AHDN properly.

Oh, he gets to go back to 1888! I would love to see that. I've never seen an episode of this show that hasn't made me go "Wow!" The trouble is I never seem to take the time to watch this or much of anything else I enjoy. Don't ask me why; I'm just weird that way.

That's the proper way to see it.  I saw it in the theater twice on its release in 1964.  And on a big screen, not these small ones you find today in multiplexes.  When I watch it on DVD, it takes me back to how I first saw the film.

Don't miss it this time around!

Looks better then the previous one they had a black cover with cartoon like Beatles in different colours. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hard-Days-Night-Anniversary-Restoration/dp/B00KATQSA2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1403168181&sr=8-4&keywords=a+hard+days+night+dvd (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hard-Days-Night-Anniversary-Restoration/dp/B00KATQSA2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1403168181&sr=8-4&keywords=a+hard+days+night+dvd)

I've read and heard two reviews of the re-release and it's heartening that both were overwhelming in their enthusiasm.

David Hepworth on his blog and Mark Kermode (both pretty respected commentators in the UK) on the Film Review programme last night.
The consensus was how alive and vibrant the film still appears.

Particularly interesting was Hepworth's comment that, given the considerable price of LPs in the 60s and the comparative cheapness of going to the cinema, the film experience of AHDN was probably shared by more people than the first two albums.

I'd just arrived on a long plane flight to Europe. Got into the hotel and lay back expecting not much on TV to watch. And lo and behold this was on. So that was a bonus. Not sure whether it was just the tv but there seemed to be some skips on the soundtrack here and there.

No a few families came in with babies and I thought oh great the film will be ruined by babie cries I was wrong they didn't cry some mothers were dancing to Beatles numbers to calm their babies was cute but the film sounded great glad I went.

Saw it last night at the National Film Theatre on the South Bank (London).
Always loved AHDN, but enjoyed it more than I ever have before, as did the rest of the audience, many of whom clapped at the end.

I felt particularly warm towards George throughout the whole film, and it was great trying to recognise all the various British actors and actresses who popped up.

In particular, Marianne Stone (the slightly older, attractive journalist who interviews Ringo) must have appeared in about a thousand British films. If it was made in the 50s through to the early 1970s, and was British, then it was almost certain that she appeared in it!

It's run for now ends at the NFT, but I think there are sporadic showings through to the end of September.
I am seriously thinking about going again.
Utterly wonderful.

Received my DVD in the mail today it's very nice comes with a slip case and the DVD comes out I had to replace the case because the pastic bit were you put the covers in was abit ripped but overall great only thing that is missing is there's no booklet inside which is a shame as the previous releases of The Beatles films had one. I will watch it later on.

Last Saturday (19th) saw the 50th Anniversary of the LP getting to No. 1 (what other number would it have got to?!) in the UK. It stayed there for 21 weeks before being knocked off the top spot by......'Beatles For Sale'!

Until 'The Sound of Music' spoilt the party on May 30th '65, these were the UK No. 1s from the Beatles' first LP onwards......
'Please Please Me'
'With The Beatles'
'The Rolling Stones'
'A Hard Day's Night'
'Beatles For Sale'
'The Rolling Stones No. 2'
'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan'
'Bringing It All Back Home'

There's no easy way to say this but, erm, WOW.
