Great B-sides
« on: May 19, 2012, 03:02:34 AM »

In the early days, B-sides were usually a destiny of a song that was considered less than an album filler. We all know that the Beatles were an exception of this rule, with fantastic B-sides like "This Boy", "Rain", "Revolution", among many others. But which other bands gave us some great songs as B-sides?

Particularly, the Zombies released several wonderful singles, despite their usual lack of success. Keyboardist and leader Rod Argent usually wrote the A-sides, while bassist Chris White was the author of the B-sides, and I think that most of them are outstanding. Here are some examples:

"I Love You": B-side of "Whenever You're Ready" (1965)
The Zombies - I Love You

"Don't Go Away": B-side of "Is This The Dream" (1965)
Don't Go Away - The Zombies

"I'll Call You Mine": B-side of "Time Of The Season" (1968)
The Zombies - I'll Call You Mine

The Yardbirds produced a couple of not merely excellent but also groundbreaking B-sides:

"Still I'm Sad": B-side of "Evil Hearted You" (1965)
The Yardbirds - Still I'm Sad

"You're A Better Man Than I": B-side of "Shapes Of Things" (1966)
Yardbirds - You're a better man than I

Finally, here's one of the most well known songs by the Kinks, released as a B-side:

"Where Have All The Good Times Gone": B-side of "Till The End Of The Day" (1965)
The Kinks - Where Have All The Good Times Gone - 1965 45rpm (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

In no particular order (A side in parentheses):

1. The Who-Water (Love Reign O'er Me)
2. Judy Collins-Who Knows Where The Time Goes (Both Sides Now)
3. Pink Cadillac-Bruce Srpingsteen (Dancing In The Dark)
4. b****-The Rolling Stones (Brown Sugar)
5. Maggie May-Rod Stewart (Reason To Believe)
6. Born On The Bayou-Creedence (Proud Mary)
7. Living Loving Maid-Led Zeppelin (Whole Lotta Love)
8. Goin' Down-The Monkees (Daydream Believer)
9. Honey Don't-Carl Perkins (Blue Suede Shoes)
10. Not Fade Away-Buddy Holly (Oh Boy)

It was really hard to stifle my brain to hand Beatles reflex and not type all their great B-sides!  :D

The Beach Boys had some great ones :

'Don't Worry Baby' (to 'I Get Around')
'Kiss Me Baby' (to 'Help Me, Rhonda')
'God Only Knows' (to 'Wouldn't It Be Nice')
'Little Bird' (to 'Friends')

Also, 'Do You Remember Walter?' (to 'Village Green Preservation Society') by The Kinks.
