I really do enjoy the sound of a sitar. It is not an easy instrument to play either. I'm sure it takes a lot of patenice and a lot of time to harness the sound. The fact that George learned how to play it, but also used it, was great.

George certainly was dedicated to his art. I read that he could play like 26 instruments or something.

I bought myself a sitar and learned because of Harrison and Skankar.  And I can tell you, it is NOT easy to learn.  His dedication is really something to be admired.

that's for sure.

my friend also bought a sitar because he's a george fanatic. he said it's easy to make it sound cool and even seem like u know wat u are doing, but in the end u really don't have a clue. he's been playing guitar for about 9 years so yeah..."the sitar is difficult to learn" seems to be the consensus

George was one of those gifted musicians. So was Paul, wasn't he? Gifted with a musical ear and the ability to play many instruments.
I envy people like George, he truly had a gift from God.

I've been listening to Shankar's band section from "Concert for George" non stop in the last few weeks. I fell inlove with the sitar's sounds completley.

There's that famous scene in Bangladesh (I think) where Ravi comes on stage and plays for a while, and when he finishes the crowd applaud like crazy. Turns out he was just tuning the bloody thing.

Its cool that he learned to play it, but even he said that he hadnt mastered it. I guess sitars are a beast to learn. I wouldnt know.

George certainly reinvented himself as a guitar player with his slide style in the 70's. So precise, so melodic, perhaps in the same category as the great Duane Allman for his phrasing and accuracy with the slide. And that tone - so distinctive! He hits one phrase, and you know it's George.

It's funny sometimes to pick out the pretenders to the throne - even though they are cool parts on their own, listen to America's "Sister Golden Hair" and Todd Rundgren's "I Saw The Light", and those slide guitar parts sound just like George. To me, saying something sounds like another musician is a high compliment. But it also means someone did it before you, and perhaps set the standard. So it's both praise and a trap of sorts.

And it's not an overstatement to say how many slide guitar parts in the 70's and beyond sounded like George Harrison.

And don't forget his skills and knowledge as a rockabilly guitarist, which were again shown off on that Carl Perkins cable TV special around '85 or '86. If anything, it proved how much George loved rockabilly, and just how much of an expert he was at playing it authentically. Seriously, very few guitarists can *master* that 50's rockabilly tone and feel, while a lot of them come close. George had it down.

According to Tom Petty, George could also "knock the sh*t out of the blues". Petty was visiting Hari a few years before his death and the two of them started jamming and George just started playing the blues like a madman. When TP asked him why he has never done a blues guitar type record George responded with a wink and a grin "Well Tom, that's Eric's thing"
