george could really rock some slide guitar too
George certainly reinvented himself as a guitar player with his slide style in the 70's. So precise, so melodic, perhaps in the same category as the great Duane Allman for his phrasing and accuracy with the slide. And that tone - so distinctive! He hits one phrase, and you know it's George.
It's funny sometimes to pick out the pretenders to the throne - even though they are cool parts on their own, listen to America's "Sister Golden Hair" and Todd Rundgren's "I Saw The Light", and those slide guitar parts sound just like George. To me, saying something sounds like another musician is a high compliment. But it also means someone did it before you, and perhaps set the standard. So it's both praise and a trap of sorts.
And it's not an overstatement to say how many slide guitar parts in the 70's and beyond sounded like George Harrison.
And don't forget his skills and knowledge as a rockabilly guitarist, which were again shown off on that Carl Perkins cable TV special around '85 or '86. If anything, it proved how much George loved rockabilly, and just how much of an expert he was at playing it authentically. Seriously, very few guitarists can *master* that 50's rockabilly tone and feel, while a lot of them come close. George had it down.
