Yeah it's a good song, without reaching great heights. Without Lennon's additions in the chorus, the song would be another Paulie Pepper filler (like Getting Better, When I'm 64 and Rita). Good filler, I know, but filler still.

Wait, which song is filler? I lost you there.

And please tell me what qualifies a song as "filler".  I know you said good filler, but I think Lovely Rita, 64, and Getting Better are pretty strong songs.  Lovely Rita is one of the funniest songs to listen to, especially with all that alliteration and assonance in it.

I'd have to say that my fave 3 are (in no particular order)...
Getting Better
SPLHCB/With a Little Help from my Friends
She's Leaving Home

In response to the debate about "filler"... I can see why Maria would say that "When I'm 64" is filler, since it's just a cute little fun song, I guess you could say. "Lovely Rita"--maybe. But it can stand on its own pretty well. And "Getting Better"? Not filler at all, IMO. It can stand on its own completely, and it's message is pretty uplifting. The song itself has great harmonies and the lyrics aren't always just for fun, like they are in "When I'm 64," for example. I mean, when Smash Mouth covered the song, they even cut out the whole "I used to be cruel to my woman, I'd beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved..." verse. I wouldn't consider a song with words like that "filler."

I also think Mr.Kite is fillerish but Lennon fans may find that hard to swallow.

There's so much classification of filler in Sgt. Pepper that I'm wondering what some of you think are the stand-out songs.  At this rate, only the title track and A Day In The Life are "non-filler".

I'm trying to find out what you guys consider filler and why.  Maria totally missed the mark of explaining anything, so I pretty much skipped her post.  I always thought of She's Leaving Home, Lovely Rita, and 64 as three of the stronger songs on the album.

I don't agree with this:
Getting Better: A filler, but good filler (as I said before). Saved brilliantly by John's "It can't get no worse" and "I used to be cruel to my woman ....etc etc" pieces.
If John saved the song, how is it still filler? I'm not trying to challenge you in any way; I just want to hear your reasons. :)

"Fixing A Hole: I regard this as Paul's only psychedelic track - ever - and it's a good one. Love the lead guitar."

Im sorry, but this is total nonsesne.
Penny Lane? Magical Mystery Tour? Sgt Pepper? Carnival of Light? Yellow Submarine? ..Just because its not in your face psychedelia, does not mean its not there.

She's Leaving Home: A middle-class story about a middle-class rebel. Saved by John's contributions to the chorus ("we didn't know it was wrong", "fun is the one thing ...." etc)

Saved? erm..no.
What does Saved mean exactly?
Its a great song regardless of Johns input, although it does add another dimension.
Still, I'd put it in the same catergory as Eleanor Rigby and For No One.....Classic songs.

I realised your Song Explanation was pretty John-Biased Maria..but that is expected on this forum.

Easy. Without John's contribution, the song is filler. John made it good filler.

Why is it "filler"? Well, the song doesn't do much, does it? Lots of "getting better, getting so much better all the time" in the chorus. At least John put a bit of bite into it.
Title: Re: Sgt. Pepper : 3 Favorite Tracks
Post by: Janice on August 05, 2004, 08:20:10 PM
Meh. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Just because its chorus is a bit simple doesn't necessarily mean it's filler. The verses and harmonies, IMO, make the song much more than just "filler."

Leaving out Carnival Of Light (which I've not heard, except for a snippet), those other songs are not, in my opinion, psychedelic. I don't know what else to say!

As for She's Leaving Home, it lacks the subtlety of Rigby and For No One. Paul liked to tell a story: he does so in Leaving Home. In Rigby, he's not telling a story, but decrying loneliness, and sad wasted lives: there's a bit of a story-line there, but it's a vehice for making a point. For No One has no story -- it describes (brilliantly) the attitudes of both lovers when the affair is over.

Leaving Home is too linear: She leaves, they find out, she meets her man. Parents regret, she doesn't seem to (but see below). End.

However, I will say that the touch "leaving the note that she hoped would say more" is very nice. You see, the song is OK -- it's simply not a top notch Beatle song!
Title: Re: Sgt. Pepper : 3 Favorite Tracks
Post by: Frightwolf on August 05, 2004, 09:12:26 PM
If you think those three songs are three of the stronger songs on Pepper, then I think you miss the point of Beatle music. So here we go with what I think of Pepper's tracks: I think that if you think that, then you really don't know how to agree to disagree.  Obviously the whole board must not know the point of Beatles music since you've gotten a dozen people to disagree with you

Sgt Pepper's LHCB: A good opener, but nothing special about the song. I love the  mono version's more up-front guitar. I love Paul's voice in this, for one -- that's something it has going for it.  And you're right, it is a good opener, but maybe it IS a filler since it is pretty essential in the album.  I do, however, enjoy it as much as, say, It Won't Be Long, I don't consider IWBL filler.

With A Little Help: A wonderful track, setting a good mood. Perfect vehicle for Ringo. Yes.

Lucy: All-time Beatle masterpiece, and it can still send shivers up my spine. Thanks to Paul for suggesting to John how best to sing it (elide the words, dreamily). Mono version sounds better for me. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds doesn't do it for me like the other songs in this album, if you know what I mean.  I like it, but it never quite moved me, perhaps because I may have had to have been alive and experience this when it first came out to know where you're coming from.  But since I don't, I do not consider this a masterpiece as much as I consider it a solid Lennon song.

Getting Better: A filler, but good filler (as I said before). Saved brilliantly by John's "It can't get no worse" and "I used to be cruel to my woman ....etc etc" pieces. Like others have said, just because he repeats "Getting Better" a lot, it does not make it filler.  It's a very enjoyable song, but like you said, you must like it to to call it GOOD filler.  I just don't think that's the case.

Fixing A Hole: I regard this as Paul's only psychedelic track - ever - and it's a good one. Love the lead guitar. I'll refer you to Indica's comments.

She's Leaving Home: A middle-class story about a middle-class rebel. Saved by John's contributions to the chorus ("we didn't know it was wrong", "fun is the one thing ...." etc) You also said in another thread that the song was too linear.  First off, I do agree that I adored John's singing in this, but the Beatles were a TEAM.  They wrote a LOT of songs together, and this is an example of how they acted as a team -- Lennon's voice was obviously the best for this part.  They could have easily put Paul's vocals in twice, but he doesn't have that voice to do the part, just like it wouldn't make sense for Harrison to sing Octopus' Garden.

A team effort, and one of my favorite songs to listen to.  My science teacher from back in 5th grade, for instance, said this song was one of her favorites to listen to growing up, and I don't think filler would have that kind of effect.  I also don't understand this "linear" argument... the song is supposed to be a story.  Why should every song have that Eleanor Rigby touch to it by using a story as a vehicle for driving a point? The fact that it ISN'T immitating that masterpiece is great, as Paul is not using the same formula as before.

Mr Kite: Nice psychedelia. Heavy-sounding lyrics, great creation of atmosphere. Yes, but this ISN'T filler? Mr. Kite is very nice, but isn't as nice as She's Leaving Home, 64, or Rita.

Within You Without You: I know I'm in a minority, but I think this is another all-time Beatle masterpiece. This is a densely-packed five minutes of music played on a variety of east-and-west instruments that beseech and plead through words that are ... well, wise words. I never was too big of a fan of this piece, so I'll refrain from saying anythign about it.

64: Did someone wedge this ditty after Within You to show up Paul's emptiness? Wouldn't surprise me! The funnest song to listen to in this album, When I'm 64 is NOT filler.  It's fun to sing, fun to play, fun to listen to, and one of the best on the album.

Rita: A very cool song in the way it's played. But the lyrics ... it's filler (but good, as I said before) I don't really care if the lyrics aren't like Yesterday or Eleanor Rigby or For No One... this song relies on alliteration and consonance, and is excuted brilliantly.  Well done, Paul!

Good Morning: A bustling, busy, back-in-time, forward-in-time classic. Not a classic IMHO.  Definitely not much better than any of the other "good fillers" you mentioned

SPLHCB reprise: Kind of cute, but well done. On ya Paulie. Agreed.

A Day In The Life: One of the great Beatle maserpieces, maybe their greatest. Still get the goosebumps as John gently sings "I read the news today, oh boy" Yes, but you could say PAUL saved this.  John couldn't think of the middle-eight, so Paul made up the "Woke up, got out of bed" part.  It was kinda needed, because it was something different from what John was singing, and John and Paul worked as a team, because as soon as Paul uttered the lyrics "Somebody spoke and I went into a dream," John chimes in with that "ahhhh" part.  If Paul didn't do that, it wouldn't have the same effect.

The argument can be played two ways.

Wow, Frightwolf... nice argument on that previous page. I didn't want to get into an argument about the entire album (just "Getting Better" since it's one of my favorite songs off the album and I felt I should stick up for it...), but I completely agree with everything you said. Well put, especially on how the Beatles worked as a team--it wasn't just John and Paul on their own, "saving" each others' songs.

Filler? What is "filler"? It's one of those terms that everyone "knows" the meaning of, but is hard to apply in some situations. English abounds with terms like that: young, bald, intelligent -- you get the idea.

The trouble in this thread is that one person's filler is another's well-liked song. And -- people forget that all this is opinion. Adding "in my opinion", "imo" and the like is infrequent. Rightly so, as it gets boring and makes the writer look like a frightened rabbit. We all know it's opinion!

PEPPER is often classed as "over-rated" -- and in one way it is. A majority of songs are simply not top Beatle product. They are certainly well played: the musical effects on Pepper give the songs an aura and feel that is amazing. But look behind that: how good are the songs as songs? My call is that Getting Better, Leaving Home, 64, Rita are not that great.

One of the ways they worked as a team was by "saving" each others' songs. Two examples:

Paul suggesting to John how best to sing Lucy, when it wasn't gelling at all. Briliant Paul!

John adding "it can't get no worse" to Paul's "getting betters" in GB's chorus. John puts the sharp edge on!

Actually -- not all of us know that this is opinion, so we save other people time by saying "IMO" before the "Just because you say so, it doesn't mean it's true" remark comes in.

If I may refer to this statement made by Maria:

If you think those three songs are three of the stronger songs on Pepper, then I think you miss the point of Beatle music.

I guess she's the only one that understands anything about the Beatles.  Everyone else who's responded to her knows nothing  :-/

^ Yeah... you know, it's funny Maria brings up that this is all opinion we're discussing when her posts certainly don't seem that way. Personally, I've always felt that one "point" of Beatle music is that there's something for everyone--I mean, look at all of us. After browsing all these "favorite" threads, you get the feeling that we all have very different tastes in music, and yet we all have the same favorite band. We can't help our tastes in music, and it seems like Maria is insulting some of us for it.

And Frightwolf, you took the words right out of my mouth that "saving" is also known as "helping one another." :P

Indeed! The genres that the Beatles music cover is amazing! That's why it's odd when I hear kids my age saying that they dislike the Beatles because the music is old... the music has aged well and they did NOT cover only rockers (my guess is that they hear She Loves You and I Wanna Hold Your Hand and tune out).

Personally, I'm glad Maria knows so much about them, but she sure has odd ways of displaying it.

I mean, lets not all get personal on this forum.

Maria shows strong opinions and often bites at peoples remarks, which can be annoying, yet mis-interpreted.

I feel the odd remark against myself was sometimes hollow in quality, but this is a personal forum.

I was going to respond to all this but I decided to say just one thing. Adding "IMO" and the like IS tedious. If anyone thinks I'm trying to pass my opinions off as facts, then they're wrong.

But it's all right to be forceful ... so long as you can back it up.

No - a song is its lyrics + tune. All the rest you're talking about (musical effects, style of singing etc) are an artist's interpretation of the song. On Pepper, the musical effects etc are very strong and sometimes hide a song's real character.

And yes - that's my opinion. It's also an opinion shared by many Beatle fans. Not that that makes me correct: but it certainly shows that it's not an eccentric opinion.
An artist's interpretation of the song... it's an artist's right to interpret their song in their own way, isn't it? Adding musical effects is a way to provide their songs with character.  Your argument isn't making much sense -- a song is EVERYTHING that composes it.  Why on Earth would it be just lyrics + tune?

Let's see ... I see the song as different from its interpretation (the writer's or anyone's). So do you from your statement "it's an artist's right to interpret their song in their own way".

So you don't believe a song is EVERYTHING that comprises it at all! My argument makes sense all right: you can't see it, is all!
Since you keep digging your own grave, Maria, I'll just enlighten everyone so no one forgets:

You have yet to respond to my arrogance remark or my reply to your opinion on all the Beatles song.

You keep running away and trying to turn this into a conversation about me cussing, and you're failing miserably.  People are seeing through your bull and seeing how you have way too much bite and are very insulting (Janice, Indica, and even Rowdy in that Lennon thread have all seen it).  You can't fool anyone -- respond to the points and maybe I'll stop being aggressive.  Until then, you're doing a horrible job debating and a p*ss-poor job convincing anyone of anything on this thread.

It is time to remind everyone again:

You have yet to respond to anything about ANYTHING.  You have avoided remarks about you being insulting and degrading, and you haven't done a good job convincing anyone that Paul's songs are filler.  If anything, you've only showed people that you are extremely biased toward John.

You are trying to avoid everyone's points against you, and you, once again, are failing.  Respond to my points and maybe I'll be less aggressive -- you know too little about me to say that I'm losing my temper.  The cussing is still at a bare minimal, and I think you're making everyone here a bit tense.

GETTING BETTER IS NOT FILLER!!!!!!!
Brilliant lyrics, beautiful harmonies, even if it was filler,it's THE GREATEST FILLER EVER MADE!  :P

Man,I think you actually ticked me off there for a second.  ;)

P.S. Filler is a song,IMHO,that had little effort put into it and is album stuffing. Yeah, that's why you shouldn't call Getting Better such names.  :D

The other night I was talking to my Mom about the lyrics of Birthday and how overly simple they are, and, for laughs, here's a story I made up.

John:I'm bored, and tired. Where are all the producers?
Paul:We're early,they're not.
John:Well...*starts falling asleep as does George*....*snores*....
Ringo:*raps them both over the head with his drumsticks* Wake up!
John and George:EEEEOOOWWWZZZA,that hurt! >:(
Yoko:Well boys,do you want some tea?
Paul:No.
John:Ignore him,he's annoyed. This stuff'll wake us up for sure!
George:Really?
Ringo:Cool.
Paul: ::)
George:Put a sock in it.
*16 cups of tea for George later*
George:Whee,whoopeee,what's in this stuff?
Yoko:It's imported from Japan!
George:Rrreally?!!!?
George:Hey I just *twitches* figured out this new riff, wanna hear it?
John,Ringo,Paul:No,not really.
George:Tttt *twitches* tttooo badd. *plays birthday riff at super high-speed*
John:Cool.
Paul:Let's write a song while we're waiting!
John:O.K. it's...ssssomebody's birthday,let's write about that!
Paul:Right so...."You say it's your birthday!"
John:Yeah,that's a good lyric.
Paul:"It's my birthday too,yeah!"
John:Go on.

*Much later*

Paul:Hey John,when's that party later?
John:Hey,we can use that!
Ringo:Right on.
Paul:Now what do you do at a party?
John:Drink?
Paul:No...
George:Drink some more of this fab tea?
Everyone but George:NO!!!!
Paul:You dance,fools.
John:Oh.

*Later*

John:So this our new single?
Paul:Yup.
George Martin:Hey,how are you all?
Everyone:Good....You're 5 hours late.
GM:So?
John:Well we wrote a new song.
George *twitches*
GM:Uh...huh...

*Plays song*

GM:Man,that really sucks. However, with my amazing production skills,we have a     new single here, methinks.
Paul:Let me guess,an orchestra?
GM:Sure,why not?
Yoko:I know, why don't I scream and fart into a microphone for an hour?
John:That's a great idea,hon.
Yoko:Shut up.
John:Yes,dear.
George:Ho*twitch*w about*twitch* my coo*twitch*ool new guitar *twitch* riff *twitch*?
John:I think he said something about a hamburger.
Everyone:Sounds great.

And that's how Birthday was...well...birthed.
I hope you liked my story!  :-/

I agree that it is not (what I would call) filler either, even tho I do see (I think) where Maria is coming from...

Given her criteria the song is not lyrically saying much nor conveying any great emotions or human secrets in it's lack of lyricism.  We probably were so spoiled by the prior Beatle efforts we came to expect each song to be perfect.

It's a good story song, one many folks can identify with and it is Paul's basic optimism coming thru.  So what the heck.

^Right! Same with a lot of songs. "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" is not exactly deep words of wisdom but it's certainly not filler now is it?

It's Getting Better is an awesome song. Certainly got me feeling good on many occasions.
Top 3?
DOn't like to pick but here goes.

It's Getting Better, A Day In The Life, She's Leaving Home.
As always, it changes all the time.

I think its better that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields are not on Peppers.
I see them as individual and earlier than peppers, a Singular landmark in the Beatles history.
Plus, its that value for money tag, getting all new songs, instead of slapping 2 singles on.

SFF and PL are from the same sessions, which started in late 1966.

When people (such as George Martin) say that Pepper would have been improved by including them, they mean they also shouldn't have been released as a single.

I was going to respond to all this but I decided to say just one thing. Adding "IMO" and the like IS tedious. If anyone thinks I'm trying to pass my opinions off as facts, then they're wrong.

And yes - that's my opinion. It's also an opinion shared by many Beatle fans. Not that that makes me correct: but it certainly shows that it's not an eccentric opinion.

Wow, this stuff sounds like I'm hearing myself. Never thought I'd hear the female with the same lines of reasoning with me on so many things. Maria, if I wasn't already married (you are female, aren't you? ;D )  would you marry me?

Since we're here, let's enlighten people on a much less insulting way of replying to people, or "judging" them as she likes to call it:

The Maria way: "You think these are the three strongest tracks? You don't understand Beatle music."

"Lemme use less complex sentences since I confused you!"

The better way: "I don't agree. *list reasons here*"

That's not so hard, is it, Maria? May take you a while to grasp, but try to get onto it, hun.

I've read the thread too, and neither side has been real subtle towards each other. Its not like this is the first time either. Seems like the same thing again,,,Maria and Joe vrs. Frightwolf. The first shot was taken by Maria on page 4 with this comment-

OK, don't be frightened. I'll go through it for you one more time, using less complex sentences.

You may want to reread the post Joe as I felt that it was unprovoked. This set the ball rolling though.

I personally enjoy Maria's opinion and willingness to debate, but she comes on a bit strong at times for some people. Me,,,,Maria and I have had our share of tussels and we pretty much understand each other now. She's a lyrics person while i'm more partial to the music itself.

Now you Joe,,,,,i'm not getting yet. I truly think that you have some kind of inner hate for Paul because he snubbed you. Is that it? Could that be a reason why your so quick to jump to Maria's side?

I'm not trying to start a feud or anything, its just that your a regular poster around here and for some reason, I just havent been able to agree with hardly anything you've had to say so far. I know you could care less, but i'm just curious.

I haven't got much time, but I feel the need to post this...

I do think that Frightwolf has overreacted a little bit, but I would still take his side if we are taking sides. I haven't posted that much, but I've read a few discussions where Maria has acted like she is the only all-knowing Beatle fan, and that's why my first post against her opinion was as polite as possible--I didn't want her to go off on me.

So in a nutshell:

Frightwolf--you have a point, but cool it a little bit. :)

Maria--adding "IMHO" or "IMO" does make a difference, and it doesn't take that much time. It makes you come off as a more polite person. I love debates but not arguments.

So do I. So that's what I like about Maria (though we're bound to get into a battle of our own one day).

Now you Joe,,,,,i'm not getting yet. I truly think that you have some kind of inner hate for Paul because he snubbed you. Is that it? Could that be a reason why your so quick to jump to Maria's side?

You don't know what you're talking about. For one thing, Maria speaks her mind well and doesn't just post "polls". That's the main thing I like about her so far. However, she's talked against Yoko, so ...ummm..... how does that fit your criteria that I side with Maria because she slams Paul, when it's clear she also slams John's woman?

I have no hate for Paul, neither before he snubbed me nor after. Though I think what he did was wrong. But it amazes me how people like you love to ignore facts that may disprove your warped case. I've said time and time again that I love all the Beatles, but John's my favorite. I'VE ALSO SAID I WOULD DECLARE PAUL THE BEST SONGWRITER OF THE 20th CENTURY - EVEN OVER JOHN! Is that clear enough for you?

Now, I do think Paul is kinda sappy. I don't think he's as honest and up front as John, nor as deep (kind of like me and Maria in our posts). Nor is Paul very cutting edge or daring (except for McCARTNEY 2 - and you hate the record). He's more of a PR guy playing a role, while John was real.

I hate when people abuse that phrase - it's supposed to be "I couldn't care less," (how's that for being like Maria? How'd you like that one, Maria? :) ) and you're right - I couldn't. I haven't agreed with you much either, so there you are.

First you apologize, but then you get sarcastic about it? I think you should try to learn better English if someone points something out. Why continue to say "I could care less" when it means the opposite of what you're really trying to say?

Just to show you I'm not merely acting like I'm above you here, only yesterday I was corrected myself, and I said "thanks" to the person and learned something. You say you'll meet a lot of people as obnoxious as Maria in life.  You also said that my lashing out got me very close to being banned.  The point is, I may be over-the-top, but in terms of being obnoxious, Maria is definitely over the top.  If I can't be tolerated, neither should she, and if people don't constantly point that out as people have with me getting so angry, she'll never get the picture.  Ever.

This is getting retarded! Maria, you know I love ya, but please quit instigating this. Fright, I enjoy your opionions also, but man, you are truly going way overboard. Theres no place or reason for that much hate. I'd hate to see you banned for this nonsense. I feel that you have alot to give to this forum, but I feel that you need to tune it down a notch also. Maria enjoys debate. I enjoy debate. Charlie enjoys debate, but theres a way of doing so without the cruelity. We all need to practice it. I just feel that we need to look at the big picture and calm down.

Frighty, I will say this.  Maria is always going to revel in the fight, and will always be obnoxious and egg you on.  At this point you should realize this and step out.  Of course Maria is just as much to blame and responsible.  I applaud your ability to stand up for yourself, I just think you go overboard sometimes.  And as for Maria, you seem to be provoking fights just for fighting's sake.  Your snide remarks (are they attempts to be funny?) reveal an immaturity that i thought you were above.

Ok Joe, I give up. Nobody cares about your english lesson. I wasnt being sarcastic towards you. I was merely stating that I realize i'm not a perfect typer or speaker and that I would be making many more mistakes down the road, so why bother.

If I misunderstood you, my apologies. I'm sure that as we all know by now, the written word here is hard to distinguish from the spoken one. Sometimes it's unclear how we mean it. But I understand what you meant now. My error.
I also want to remind you of something that everyone conveniently ignored when I responded to you: Namely, that I am not perfect myself and don't claim to be. I gave the example where I used the word "logistics" the incorrect way. I was only bringing that up to show that I make mistakes too, and when someone pointed it out to me I learned from it and didn't blast him for it.

I beg to differ. For the most part, I'd agree -- but there is one (I won't name the person now) whom I have an extremely difficult time understanding (and since I'm imperfect, I may have misused the word "whom" here :) ) . Tough to bash me when I bash myself, isn't it?

And Joe -- I don't really have a problem with you after we settled things after the POB (you got over my dig with it and seldom mention it anymore).  However, I really disagree with you here.  You're telling me that it's OK that Maria started it, but I shouldn't have gone over the top.  However, why should Maria be free to say whatever she wants and I have to cool it and back off? OK, maybe I should cool it, but damn it, it's as if I have to tone down my attitude but Maria can be as obnoxious as she wants.  I'm sorry, but that's not gonna fly with me.

I didn't agree with Maria about her McCartney "filler" choices, so that's another thing I wanted to cover when I was accused of always taking her side earlier and always bashing Paul over John all the time. Paul's songs on PEPPER are great. I do notice Maria's sharp edge and the way she talks to you, and so forth. But I'm just trying to explain to you (as others have done) that what really sticks out like a sore thumb to me in this particular thread -- for ME, at any rate -- is that you keep going on and on and on about it, and making these incredibly long posts, re-re-quoting your points over and over, demanding that people take note and respond. It's THAT which now sort of takes over and goes beyond Maria's barbs, if you see what I mean.

If this doesn't "fly with you," what can I say? It's my opinion, and I couldn't care less.  :)

Sgt. Pepper's is often defined as a rock album but there are few rocks in it ... Getting Better is one example of the band making (soft) rock combining handclaps and harmonies like in their early times and albums ...

Getting Better it sounds somewhat as an Abbey Road LP track to me: 'clear' production and spice-alley guitars arrangements and harmonies tho drums are not in the vein of Abbey Road at all  ...

P.S. Fixing A Hole's guitar reminds me of some of the Abbey Road LP tracks too ...

Apart from the title track (and return to the title track), if I really had to chose only three :

• A Day in the Life
• She’s Leaving Hone
• Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite

With a Little Help, Getting Better and When I am Sixty Four would be close contenders.

I'm going to go for a shock tactic and not choose A Day In The Life.   :o
Haha.  Of COURSE I love the song, but strangely enough, it probably just misses my top three, unfortunately.  Monster of a song though.

1.  Within You Without You
2.  Lovely Rita
3.  When I'm Sixty Four

1. A Day In The Life
2. With A Little Help From My Friends
3. Getting Better

Although I must note the best Sgt. Pepper-era songs are not even on the album - 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Penny Lane'. They beat pretty much anything on that album, even 'A Day In The Life' - but only just barely on that one. This wasn't too hard - I still feel Sgt. Pepper is overrated.

It's interesting that for an album many now decry as lacking good songs there's so many different top 3s.

1 A Day in the Life
2 Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite
3 Good Morning, Good Morning
