To me it really does depend on the friend.
Generally I'd get him/her Beatles "1". To give them a field of what they're about ( key word generally).
For the friends who have told me that beatle's music makes( in reference to I am the walrus) no sense Id give them Let it Be ( Which I think is one of the more serious albums.)

"Beatles '65"

"Beatles '65" includes eight of the fourteen songs from "Beatles for Sale".

Side one

   1. "No Reply"
   2. "I'm a Loser"
   3. "Baby's in Black"
   4. "Rock and Roll Music" (Chuck Berry)
   5. "I'll Follow the Sun"
   6. "Mr. Moonlight" (Roy Lee Johnson)

Side two

   1. "Honey Don't" (Carl Perkins)
   2. "I'll Be Back" – 2:22
   3. "She's a Woman" – 2:57
   4. "I Feel Fine" – 2:20
   5. "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" (Perkins)

Why?  I love this album.  Great songs.  Still got it.  It means the most to me.  Memories.

John, Paul, George, and Ringo all have lead vocals.

I'd buy 'em the vinyl.  Mono version.

How many other people would have this album?

in case of a person who has just got into them , i would recommened 1 , but if they already have a Hits one
and wonder where to go from there , i would recommened Sgt Pepper . and with an early one it would be maybe
the Please Please Me album.

I chose Abbey Road, because of the quality of songs. I think you would be hard pressed to find a person that has never heard 'She Loves You', 'Yesterday', 'I Want To Hold Your Hand', or 'Let It Be'. A compilation could almost kill interest because it would not show what a good band they were. There is a prevailing attitude amongst the general public that The Beatles are just about the above hits. When I heard "Abbey Road" or "Sgt. Pepper", I knew I was on to something so much deeper than what even I had perceived as "THE BEATLES". When I heard the albums I saw a depth that I had no idea about, and I considered myself a fan already. I only had "20 Greatest Hits" and "Live At The Hollywood Bowl".
