In My Life
« on: April 12, 2015, 08:42:18 PM »

Written by: Lennon/McCartney
Recorded: 18, 22 October 1965
Producer: George Martin
Engineer: Norman Smith

Released: 3 December 1965 (UK), 6 December 1965 (US)

John Lennon: vocals, rhythm guitar
Paul McCartney: harmony vocals, bass
George Harrison: harmony vocals, lead guitar
Ringo Starr: drums
George Martin: piano, tambourine

This has been my favourite Beatles song since I discovered the band in 1994 (some exiting times ahead then!). I first heard it on Imagine: John Lennon (soundtrack) which I borrowed from a friend. Ringo's drums standout in that the song. Up there with some of his best drumming. George Martins sped up piano/harpsichord solo adds a beautiful touch to an already perfect song. I wonder who came up with the guitar intro.

Yes this made my all time top ten of the Beatles.  Lovely words, gorgeous melody and arrangement. It hasn't suffered the same fate as Yesterday by being too overdone in cover versions or becoming a talent show standard.

You know it's probably a top rank Beatle song when John and Paul argue over authorship.

It won the 2011 version of The Elimination Game.

'In My Life', much like 'Yesterday' and 'A Day In The Life', wouldn't make my Top 50 of Beatles songs.
Its world-weariness might have suited the '68/'69 Lennon better.

Unlike 99% of people I struggle a bit with 'Rubber Soul'. I don't know why, great sleeve, some great songs, released at the absolute epicentre of the 60s, it should be right up my street.
I hope to go someway towards rectifying this around its 50th Anniversary (see also 'Help!').

The Beatles Monthly Poll liked 'In My Life' well enough, no. 9 no. 9 no. 9 no. 9 no. 9.....erm..... it was 9th.

Don't like it, never have. I find the harmonies very cloying. It sounds like a show tune.
If I want a bit of 1965 scouse homesick whimsy give me Ferry Cross The Mersey any day.

Great song, of course. I will sometimes skip it during an album play if I'm not in that mood, but that's just me.

Any idea if George Harrison used his Gibson ES-345 on In My Life? ..and whether he came up with the introductory guitar lick?

I'll have to check some books to see what guitar was played. Hold on.

The forum is sometimes slow and sometimes exploding.

I've researched it in Brian Kehew's Recording The Beatles, but no information given. I could't find it in Ian McDonald's Revolution In The Head either. I'll try to dig up some more.

Nothing in Lewisohn's Recording Sessions either.

It might be in Babiuk's Beatles Gear, but I haven't got that one.

On Tuesday November 23rd at Twickenham film studios the group filmed their promos for 'We Can Work It Out', 'Day Tripper', 'Help!', 'Ticket To Ride' and 'I Feel Fine'. Three members used their familiar instruments: McCartney the Hofner bass, Lennon his Rickenbacker 325, and Starr the 22-inch-bass Ludwig kit with new number-six logo drum-head. But a new guitar was evident. Harrison had a sunburst Gibson ES-345.
Gibson's ES-345TD double-cutaway hollowbody guitar was in effect an upscale version of Joe Brown's 335 that Harrison had tried out back in 1962. The 345 had a six-position Varitone rotary switch for choosing different tonal settings, and all the metal fittings were gold-plated. A sunburst 345 then cost £236/5/- (£236.25, about. $660 then), which would be about £2,730 ($3,820) in today's money. Harrison used his new Gibson only for the filming of these promo clips, and later again this year during the last UK Beatles tour.
[...]
The British tour started on December 3rd in Glasgow at the Odeon Cinema and continued through Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester. On the 8th in Sheffield, Yorkshire, Lennon and Harrison were photographed using their two new Vox AC-100 guitar amps while McCartney used his new Vox AC-100 bass amp, playing his '63 Hofner bass and with his original '61 Hofner as a spare. Harrison played his new Gibson ES-345 as his main guitar, switching to the '65 Rickenbacker 360-12 for 'If I Needed Someone'. Lennon played his '64 Rickenbacker 325, with the '64 Gibson J-160E along as a spare.

Sheffield, England, during The Beatles' final British tour, and George plays his Gibson ES-345, a guitar which he used only for a short time at the end of 1965."

Paul is quoted in the Barry Miles biography as saying he came up with the riff. Mind you he claimed to have written most of the melody, while John reckons he wrote all but the middle 8.

Seems we'll never know. George did play the riff on the record though. Not sure of his instrument for it.

They had help from several new instruments that had found their way into The Beatles' camp. These included Harrison's new 1965 Rickenbacker 360-12 with updated, rounded-edge cutaways, which he had acquired during a tour stop in Minneapolis and used on "If I Needed Someone," and George Harrison and Lennon's matching Sonic Blue 1961 Fender Stratocasters with rosewood fretboards. These two Strats marked the Beatles' entry into the world of Fender.

"I decided I'd get a Strat, and John decided he'd get one too," Harrison said. "So we sent out our roadie, Mal Evans … and he came back with two of them, pale blue ones. Straight away we used them on the album we were making at the time, Rubber Soul." Although the Strats can be heard throughout the album, they are most noticeable on "Nowhere Man." The serial number on Harrison's Strat is 83840, which dates it to late 1961.

McCartney had turned to his latest acquisition, a Rickenbacker 4001S bass, as his main bass for the Rubber Soul sessions. He had received the bass when Rickenbacker's Francis C. Hall, who had visited the band in New York in 1964 with several models for the band to choose from, visited the band in Los Angeles in August 1965 with his son John and only one model — a left-handed Fireglo 4001S for McCartney.

Other instruments included a cheap sitar Harrison bought at a London shop after being intrigued by the Indian musicians on the set of "Help!"; it is most famously heard on "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)." Harrison and Lennon's Gibson J-160E models returned, as did Lennon's 1964 Rickenbacker 325 Capri, Lennon's Framus Hootenanny acoustic (which was mostly played by Harrison at this point) and Harrison's Gretsch Tennessean.

McCartney used his 1962 Epiphone Casino and Epiphone Texan acoustic, both of which he still performs with today, and his 1963 Hofner 500/1 bass. McCartney played through a Vox AC100 amp and a Fender Bassman while Lennon and Harrison played through Vox AC30 and AC100 guitar amps.
