I'm pretty sure that most people involved in making this list never touched a guitar in their lives. There are some guitarists in it that never even laid down a proper solo in their entire carreer. Greg Ginn of Black Flag for instance - I love that band, but there are hundreds of thousands of guitarists that are definately better than him. Kurt Cobain - great songwriter, singer and charismatic frontman, but certainly not a spectaculair guitarist. Jack White - absolutely worthless as a guitarist. Joey Ramone - I love the Ramones, by I never heard him doing anything more than just sticking to his three chords per song.

This list is a complete joke.

Polls like this are riddled with marketing appeal to whatever artist holds present public interest, in order to sell the magazine.
In other words, a total crock of Mess* ( cheers Lenny)  8)

yeah this list is rubbish.  disregard it entirely.  their #2 selection also suprises me, I wouldd have Duane high, but certainly not #2

being a good guitarist implies more than being fast by playing 20 notes per second.
Writing good songs, good riffs, setting a good rhythm, playing with emotion and charisma, handle huge crowds, being innovative, influential and original are all taken into consideration.
Yeah, Kurt might be ranked too high in that list but I'd definitely put him in the top 100, the same goes with Joey Ramone, he's a good guitarist.

Rolling Stone used to be a respectable rock mag but now it's just a joke. I am soooo glad I decided against getting a subscription.

I think he's a good guitarist, and he deserves to be in that list...him and bob mayo are great... Frampton is known for using the 'talkbox' in songs...

Lou Reed above Dickie Betts or Neil Young, for god's sake!

And Ike Turner above David Gilmour!

And Bert Jansch and Joni Mitchell?  C'mon!   And John Fahey but no Leo Kottke?

They should have separated the group into two sub-sets: thythm and lead players (strummers and soloists) then this might begin to make sense.

Because John Lennon is just as strong a rhythm player as Lou Reed or any the punks listed.  And he could pick pretty damn well too ("Julia").
