Title: What if Jane Asher stayed with Paul?
Post by: Loco Mo on December 18, 2016, 01:50:07 PM
It seemed like he took their breakup very hard as reflected in the songs he wrote that were purported to pertain to her.  One that's been stuck in my head since last night is "What you're doing."  I can't imagine Paul without Linda and all the singing she did with him after the Beatles split.  Her voice is really a major part of a lot of his solo stuff.  And, yes, I like it!

It's funny how something could change which would change the entire future.  I wonder what Paul's albums would have been like without Linda.

This week Ive done something Ive never done before.
Ive watched various interviews with Linda. Ive come to the conclusion that Paul was extremely lucky to have met this lovely woman.
She comes over as very real and warm, with no falseness or ego, no airs or graces.
Had I met her before I was married I wouldve fallen for her personality (not her looks) myself lol.

The way she looked after her kids AND did a job was brilliant. (her kids were lucky too to have her as their Mother).

Paul surely picked a good one there.......such a shame she was taken so early.

RIP Linda.

I agree, Kev and I’m glad Paul settled down and treated her right.

I know you like that version Baz but I prefer the RS version for 3 reasons;

This one is a bit too slow
I really like the bridge in the RS version
I dont much like the 12 bar blues solo in the middle of this one.

Kev, I posted the Anthology version to answer Loco Mo's original questions "What if Jane Asher stayed with Paul?" and "I wonder what Paul's albums would have been like without Linda."  If Paul and Jane were still together we would probably have a half century of songs where Paul would spill his liver as he did in the Anthology version of I'm Looking Through You, most evident in the outro.  There would be intermittent tender love songs along the way.  With Linda as his muse, Paul's love songs were taken to new heights.

But, yes, I do like the Anthology version more than the Rubber Soul version because it's slow, bluesy and full of explosive bursts of instrumental and verbal anger.  I wonder if Jane Asher ever heard that version back then.  The Rubber Soul version was sugar-coated in comparison.

Its a song I love to play and sing on my acoustic.............but I add the bridge  :)

Do you think 'You Wont See Me' is about Jane ?

It was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar, Kev.  I play the "false starts" because that's how it was on my US Capitol Records Rubber Soul LP...

I used to play the "why tell me whys" but these days I play the 12 bar blues bridges.  But I do like the line "Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight."  So I play the Rubber Soul version when I play it on acoustic guitar...with the false starts.  :)

Yes.  Her line was engaged...

What a romantic song!  I always wonder why Paul gave the lead vocal to John.

Royal Albert Hall   18 April 1963

Jane Asher was in the audience that night.  She was to interview The Beatles for the Radio Times after the concert.  That was the the night Jane and Paul first met...

Ive often wondered that too Baz, for years I thought it was a John song, John even sings the harmonies.

Did Paul ever do it live ?

Its one of my favourite Beatle tracks and I love the little figures played on lead guitar at the coda. (and the guitar solo of course)

I've never heard Paul do Every Little Thing live, Kev.  I hope he does one day.

Music aside, I don't think Paul and Jane were compatible.  Jane was ambitious and had her own career which was one reason I liked her so much.  She was also still young, 23 when Paul married Linda, who was, I believe 29.   Paul wanted a woman who would center her life around him and the family.  Jane wasn't ready to do that.  Linda and Paul were soul mates I believe.  And she was the one who introduced Paul to his concern for animals and advocacy for animal welfare.  Linda managed to continue her career as a photographer, followed her avocation as an animal rights crusader, vegan cookbook author, and company founder, as well as being a great wife and mother.  Linda also contributed to Paul's music in her own way.  I identify more with Jane in her life choices but I admire Linda and what she accomplished in her life, greatly.
I saw Jane onstage in London.  She is an amazing actress so I'd say all's well that ends well.
Paul would have written beautiful love songs regardless.

Yes I agree with a lot of that SF, good post.
Linda was seemingly perfect for Paul whereas Jane was a career girl, I dont know much about Jane as a person but Linda was lovely and down to earth. I always admire the was Jane never speaks about her time with Paul though.
