Title: Roof top concert - no wind screens on mics?
Post by: alexis on November 26, 2009, 07:02:59 PM
Beatles - Get Back (Rooftop) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqiAl84ipIk#normal)

Hair blowing everywhere, Ringo in a mac ... tough day for outdoor recording! I don't see any "windscreens" on the microphones ... how come we don't hear the wind blowing? The outdoor concerts I've done would have been howling with wind if I'd used naked mics.

I wonder why the wind wasn't obvious in this recording?

Well spotted Alexis. Outside my area of knowledge. This is the less famous filmed rooftop concert by Jefferson Airplane in 1968. Seems windy, and they don't have wind shields. Be warned - despite being a year earlier, this is disturbingly similar in style and content to The Beatles. Bloody thieving scousers!

^Blowing another Beatles' myth?

Don't know if The Beatles ever claimed it to be an original idea, but damn these look awfully similar (even down to the cops arriving at the end.)

Talking seriously, there's many things that are amazing to me.

Other is when I see them singing "This boy" the 3 guys in 1 mic. Anybody that use a mic some time know that if you are more than 45ยบ, it's impossible that someone can hear you.
The old technology is better?

I've thought about that too, Nelson.

Only think I can think of is that the configuration of the mic may have been "omni" rather than "cardioid" or "hypercardioid". Most mics I have used are not omni; that way they can pick up my voice but exclude sounds off to the sound (or from the audience).

What do you think?

Sure, but it's amazing that in that time the sound got that quality.

And remember that the don't use they own PA amplifiation. They sing with the system of the place!!! (Remeber Paul talking in Anthology about the Shea)

I just love watching them sing this live!!

Interesting how (unlike the Rolling Stones) they didn't perform it the same way every time. On the record it's "... took my love awayyyyyyyy", and similarly on the other verses in the song. Here, live, it's "took my love away.", cutting it off short.

With their busy schedule (!!), how in the world did they have time to decide "Hey, tonight, let's sing it this way..."?

Incredible!!

Seeing as there were overdubs on this album in the end, you could easily be forgiven if you thought they were added after. They did it before.

The finale wasn't ment to be on the roof though was it?

They did it because it was the cheapest and easiest way to go outside.

They should've all chilled out rather than turning up in January in the cold.
