I understand you pretty well. I listen to his whole discography almost every month (the same with the others) and it's good to know that doesn't matter which album you choose: be sure that there'll be good and great music on it. My second choice could be George Harrison album too ...
From here:
http://dmbeatles.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b=harrison,v=display,m=1132274101,s=0"My favourite one is Extra Texture (Read All About It) (1975) but it's not one of his most successful albums (underrated I think). Gone Troppo (1982) is an unknown treasure.
My top would be (All Things Must Pass, Concert For Bangladesh, Living In The Material World and the 2 albums from 'the guys' era excluded):
1. Extra Texture 1975 (quiet and peaceful - underrated)
2. George Harrison 1979 (mature and peaceful)
3. Gone Troppo 1982 (surprising - underrated)
4. Brainwashed 2002 (posthumous - vey good)
5. Cloud Nine 1987 (one of the most commercial - 60s + ELO)
6. Thirty Three & 1/3 1976 (somehow witty)
7. Somewhere in England 1981 (bitter and unequal, weak)
8. Dark Horse 1974 (confused George)
If you like George music with the guys: Cloud Nine and Brainwashed
If you like Living In The Material World: George Harrison and Thirty Three & 1/3.
If you like more obscured but great work ('he's the quiet one' style): Gone Troppo and Extra Texture"
