Hello Goodbye:  The ending scene from The Swing Kids video excerpt was hard to watch.  I saw a review in which the following statement was made:  "In the eyes of today's teenagers, Nazis are simplistic villains who get outsmarted, out-gunned and outmaneuvered by Indiana Jones in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and other simplistic action-adventure tales. For that uninformed youth audience, 'Swing Kids' is a grim history lesson on the horrors the Nazis inflicted on fellow Germans during Adolf Hitler's move toward World War in 1939."  It's very hard to watch and to be reminded of the astonishing brutality of the time.

On a lighter note, I wonder if "Laverne and Shirley" were Yiddish.  Ref:  Schlemiel Schlimazel from their theme song.

Wow!  It's good to be reminded of how good the Bee Gees were.  Phenomenal songs and vocals.

I love and adore the Barry Sisters!!  Their Yiddish version of Bei Mir Bist Du Schon is like ear candy to me.  I love their version the most of all others!  Thanks for posting.

Note the English translation of Bei Mir Bist Du Schon:

I will say to you, so you'd hear directly
so that you would declare (your) love to me
When you speak with your eyes,
I would fly with you wherever you wish
I do not care where.
When you have a bit of sense
And when you show your childlike little smile
When you are wild as an Indian
Even if you were a Galitzyaner,
I say: It doesn't bother me.

To me, you are lovely,
To me, you are charming.
To me, you are the only one in the world.
To me, you are lovely,
To me, you are charming,
To me, you are more precious than money.

Many pretty girls wanted me for a spouse
and among them all I chose only you.

Also, while researching Bei Mir Bist Du Schon, I discovered a very beautiful poem:  "Bist du bei mir" by Johann Sebastian Bach / Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel

Bist du bei mir, geh‘ ich mit Freuden
zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh'!
Ach, wie vergnügt wär' so mein Ende:
Es drückten Deine schönen Hände
mir die getreuen Augen zu.

If you are with me, I will go with joy
To death and to my rest!

An, how cheerful were my end:
Your beautiful hands would press shut
My faithful eyes.

Yes, Loco.  Swing Kids was factual.  Conditions in Nazi Germany were brutal in that era.

But let's think of how free we were in the United States at that time.  Benny Goodman performed at Carnegie Hall and the audience wildly applauded Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen and Ziggy Elman's trumpet solo which was a freilach...the kind of Klezmer music played at Jewish weddings.  Ziggy Elman had his own orchestra and rearranged this freilach...

Der Shtiler Bulgar

...into a big band hit...

And The Angels Sing

Benny Goodman took it a step further, again with Martha Tilton and a trumpet freilach solo by Ziggy Elman...

That's a beautiful poem and you can see that Yiddish is similar to German.

Paul said that he was was influenced by Bach's Bourrée BWV 996...

Johann Sebastian Bach could have been a rock star if he wanted...

It’s been quite a journey in this thread. From Lovely Rita to Yiddish and Bach via the Andrew sisters

With all the love-making sounds at the end, I've always heard it as "I'm leaving."  You know, the opposite of "I'm coming."  Something John would toss in...
