The Beatles Second Album (US) One of My Favorites
« on: June 10, 2022, 12:25:53 AM »

This album is rarely heard on air, I like these up tempo songs more than later work. But  to be honest, I'm wondering if they actually played their instruments on this album, particularly drums. What does everybody else think.

This is one of my favorite albums and one of only a handful of original vinyls I own.

I always assumed it was the Beatles playing the instruments. Who else d'you think it would be: session musicians?

They probably recorded these songs at a slower tempo and sped them up in mastering. The playing is too clean.

Listen to Live at BBC. That early music is almost always up tempo and exciting. I don't think they played on a lot of those songs too. If they could play that well in the early days, why change their style and play slow, plodding songs later. Makes me suspicious.

Earlier than that...

Hm, I myself would nominate Helter Skelter, for one. Very dreary and humdrum.

 ;D  Sorry, I couldn't resist.

My favorite version of Helter Skelter is Take 2...

...A bit plodding, perhaps, but it hits the mark.

Look out!  Helter Skelter!

So, to borrow Jen Psaki's favorite phrase, can we circle back to this question? Togger, which of the Beatles' songs do you think are plodding? I'm curious.

I would consider 2 George's later songs as plodding.

It's All Too Much
Only A Northern Song

I kind of agree. For me it's a poor song which plods. It's highlighted (and saved a fair bit) by Paul's great singing though. I think there are quite a few on the White Album that are poor. I will forever agree with George Martin, it should've been a single album.

Thanks for replying, nimrod. I was actually joking (more like being snarky) about Helter Skelter. I was trying to think of an UN-plodding–like song. I keep forgetting almost all of the regular posters are musicians.  :)

I agree with you about It's All Too Much and Only a Northern Song, although I do enjoy the former, probably because that thought (a very melodramatic "It's all TOO MUCH!!!") ran through my head quite often while the kids were teenagers.

Is plodding always bad though. “Im so Tired” plods along. But the tempo works for that. I like that one. “Blue Jay Way” plods but ……

hold on. That’s not helping the argument.

<laugh> I was going through that exact same argument in my head last night, in bed, in regard to "Cry Baby Cry."

Ahh but I'm So Tired is allowed to plod as it's subject is lethargy. And John gets kinds angry near the end which relieves the boredom  ha2ha

Agree about Blue Jay Way. George had a tendency to plod.
