Yeah, I'm kind of salivating over that book myself. I wonder if it will be ever sold separately by EMI? I know some bloodsuckers on eBay will probably list it for $500.00. >:(

This has certainly caused a dither among the collectors.

I'm feeling rather dithered about it. ;) I wish I could get the box set but I'll have to do it one at a time. I'm glad I have that option!
-
I ordered it even though I don't have a turntable. This goes beyond reason. This is lust, pure and simple! :P

You still don't have a turntable George? Well, at least you can read the book. ;)

I'm almost dreading that because I'm going to want them and there's no way I'll be able to get the whole set. No one at a time with them. I'll have to be content with the mono CD box set and the stereo LPs. This is something that would be hard to explain to a lot of people!

I wouldn't fret about not having the mono LPs if you have the mono CDs. Since they were done with no compression or noise reduction, I think they'll sound similar to the LPs.
And with the stereo LPs, you'll have the album covers!

kind of a shame they included Past Masters - would have been nice to get the vinyl singles all boxed up.

I'm glad to have Past Masters in this set. I don't want to have to play a bunch of 45s one at a time. I guess it would be ok as a separate set.

this puppy is HEAVY!!
Yes it is heavy! I had it delivered to my work address and with my balky back, I had to ask someone to carry it to my car.
It's in the next room sitting on my coffee table and I'm looking over at it with puppy love eyes. ;D I'm gonna check out the book in a few minutes.

I'm an Amazon Prime member so I get free two-day shipping.
Of course Amazon started charging tax in Texas this year, which is a bummer.

That's good you got the free shipping, must have cost Amazon a fortune.
now that Amazon is charging tax I shop at my local record/book stores. I'm fortunate in that I have three excellent independent record stores close by.

I like the book. There is an introduction with quotes from people like Tom Petty and Brian Wilson about The Beatles.
There is an essay for each album (I can call them that again!) that are pretty good.
There is a section discussing the 2009 remaster process and how it differs from the CDs and the vinyl.
The last section discussed the disc production process. A lot of that information is on the U.S. Amazon page for the box set. For some the reason, the Amazon UK page has a lot less information.
Kelley, there a lot of pictures that I've never seen before. It's a well made book and I hope you can get your hands on it someday.

Sometimes if I don't mind waiting, I'll buy a new item from a trusted third-party Amazon seller and pay only $2.98 shipping and avoid the tax.

As for me, I'm content with my complete collection of vinyl Beatles albums which are first pressings purchased when they were first released. The early albums are mono Capitol releases and are stereo from Rubber Soul on. Several years ago, I purchased a first pressing UK mono Sgt Peppers which is my favorite. All of them were cared for properly over the years and play with minimal pops and clicks.
For those who have never experienced listening to The Beatles on vinyl, this box set is the way to go and will be a treat to your ears. You'll pay a whole lot more for new first pressings of all these albums if you buy them individually. Plus you get a hardbound book with it all.
I think the quality of the recordings in the box set as compared to the original vinyl albums set will be hotly debated in certain circles. But I feel the box set will certainly not disappoint.
Sir John, let us know what you think.
-
I have a bunch of USA vinyl records and some UK vinyl too.
so far listening to Rubber Soul from the 2012 release I have died and gone to heaven. The book features dozens of pictures I have never seen before, not only that the pictures have a photographic feel about them. total quality.
The box is well worth the price.
When the mono box is released I will not hesitate flashing the plastic (again)
-
I think it's worth the price too. There's a warmth to vinyl which is lacking with CDs. The box set is an instant complete new vinyl collection.

It's a great turntable at a great price. I bought one about six years ago to replace my 1975 Philips 312...

I couldn't pack up that old faithful 312, so I have both set up for use. :)
-

also, you actually listen to an album because you can't just press play and fuhgedaboudit.
I used to judge people by how they handled a record. If you knew how to get hold of a record by the edges and not leave greasy fingerprints anywhere near the grooves you were instantly cool in my book.

Right. Sometimes the extra work and care add to the album's appreciation.

I wish more people had possessed that skill. It would make me a lot less frustrated with what I see in thrift shops and auctions.

Me too George, but the preview was a good start! It sounds great, especially the part about pictures you've never seen before. I love pictures!

When I looked on Amazon and figured it out I thought it was actually less expensive one at a time, not taking the book into consideration. Or maybe that was just my poor math skills. At any rate, one at a time is my only option, unfortunately.

I was referring to the original first pressings, Kelley. Those in mint condition are quite expensive today.

Ever notice in the movies, that the cool characters always have turntables and never play CDs? ha2ha

I ordered it from Amazon. I was going to wait until I bought a house, but I can't just let those babies sit there on my coffee table!
And based on the recommendations of a lot of reviewers on Amazon, I upgraded the cartridge to the Shure M97xE High-Performance Magnetic Phono Cartridge.

The thing I like about the turntable is that is has a built-in pre-amp, so I can hook it up to a Yahama AV receiver that doesn't have a phono input.
When I move into a house I'll get an old fashioned stereo receiver and some JBL type speakers, but right now I need to stop spending money like a drunken sailor on liberty!

Thanks. As far as the mono goes, I'm going to read reviews first before deciding to buy. If it's not way better sound wise than the 2009 Beatles In Mono CDs, I may not buy the vinyl. I consider the The Beatles In Mono to be some of the finest remasters ever and one of the highlights of the digital age.

You'll like that turntable, George. I also upgraded the cartridge when I bought my AT-LP120 to an Audio-Technica AT440MLa.
My turntable doesn't have the USB port. It wasn't available at the time and the model you bought superceded mine. I had to buy a Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202 for USB capability. I paid about $100 more than you for my AT-LP120 in 2005 and that's why I said it was a great deal.
Enjoy your new box set on your new turntable!!

As of September 20011, the turntable now comes with the AT95E cartridge, which is supposed to be pretty good, but I wanted to upgrade anyway. The AT440MLa is an excellent cartridge which I may get down the road, depending on how I like the Shure, which is said to have a very warm sound, the AT95E is said to be brighter sounding.
The turntable should arrive Friday. I started opening the albums today. Geez, I was like a kid when I opened Magical Mystery Tour and The White Album. I got The White Album for Christmas in 1968 and wow did that bring back memories!

That won't happen until I buy a house. I honestly don't know where I'm going to fit the turntable right now. I can use the built in preamp and connect the turntable to my AV receiver, or connect to my PC for ripping to digital or even listening.

That little unit works very well. And you can monitor what's going into the computer through your speakers.

Targeted advertising has gotten really creepy. I was on a food related website earlier tonight and Amazon had this huge ad on the side that showed one turntable after another. I have not even looked at them at their site, just read these posts here. Has it really gotten that weird on the Internet?
-
I would clear out all the cache/history and cookies from your browsers history.
Also, depending on which browser you are using, you should be able to set it up so that it will delete all cookies and history everytime you close it out. You should also have a setting that refuses all third party cookies.
You will find that the browser will not remember all your logins and password, but in this day and age an extra bit of security is always a good thing.

Thanks for the reminder. I haven't done that in a while.

These sound great. Some reviewers complained about distortion on Sgt. Pepper's. I didn't hear any. So far the pressings are clean with no pops or scratches. I hooked the turntable up to my home theater-Yamaha RX-V371 A/V receiver, some old Kenwood mini surround speakers and a Yamaha sub woofer. I played back on straight 2-channel stereo. And you know what? They sounded like crap!. Just like when I play CDs on this system.
So I hooked up the turntable to the PC and and I'm now listening to Abbey Road through Realtek HD Audio and my little PC speakers and sub-woofer. And you know what? It sounds great! I have the format set to 2-channel 16-bit 192000 Hz (Studio Quality). Music has always sounded better on my PC. The home theater is great for DTS and Dolby True HD audio while watching Blu-Rays, but CDs and (now) vinyl-not so much.
Cant wait to get the house and set up a room with a tube amp and big floor-standing speakers.
I'm still using the cartridge that came with the turntable. Maybe this weekend I'll connect the Shure cartridge to see if it sounds better.
-
Now I'm not so sure about digitizing the vinyl. I'm kind of enjoying the whole analog experience, again.
Gotta find the anthologies on vinyl.

Your CDs will sound a lot like the vinyl they came from. They'll have analog sound in a digital format. It's hard to describe, but the CD that you make will sound different than the factory produced CD.

To be honest, when I originally listened to these, I wasn't paying as close attention as I should have. Today, I sat down and gave these a critical listen. I'm not sure how I missed this the first time, but these are very noisy pressings-very disappointing! Apparently a lot of customers in the U.S. have the same complaint, based on reviews.
EMI used a company called Rainbo, who seem to have a bad reputation for making bad pressings. I've been out of the vinyl scene since 1983, so I didn't know anything about this. The European discs are pressed by Pallas which is supposed to be better, but some English customers complained about warped records.
I processed a return through Amazon for a refund-I don't want to take the chance of getting another lemon based on what others have experienced-some have been through 2 or 3 sets.
I ordered the EU set from Amazon.co.uk. I'll let you know if the quality is better.

I'm sorry to hear this, George. I've read through several pages of the Amazon reviews and it was heartbreaking to hear the various problems people were experiencing. I hope the Euro version solves the problem for you.
It's nice to know that Amazon is doing the right thing for their customers. Let's see if EMI does the right thing by producing the set correctly and instituting an exchange program.
I think the art of making vinyl records has been lost along the way. I hope there are some who still remember and EMI recruits them.

Yeah, Kelley, I wouldn't be in any big hurry if I was you. I hope EMI see these reviews and make arrangements to press a second batch with a better pressing plant. The Beatles and their fans deserve better.

Barry, I was thinking for a while that maybe because I was listening to CDs for so long that I was being overly critical. As I kept listening, however, I realized that I DO remember what good pressings sound like.
I used to return quite a few U.S. made EMI/Angel and CBS classical records back in the day. Then I found out about a pharmacist in New Jersey who imported classical records from England and sold them in his store. I was blown away the first time I heard HMVs pressings; night and day compared to Angel.
I thought about just returning these and not replacing them, but this set is the reason I bought a turntable again. I hope to be blown away by the European pressings and I hope EMI finds a better pressing plant in the U.S.

sorry to hear of your troubles.
I haven't played every record in the set, but the ones I have played show no signs of any warp/background noise. I bought my set through a local independent record store, I am not sure how they would handle any problems, if I did have any.
I'm glad I didn't have to go through the hassle of having to return this enourmous heavy box via mail. Shipping will always be an issue for this set.

The consensus seems to be that the noisy pressings begin with Revolver through Past Masters. That was the case with me. The older releases were better.
I hope all your pressings are good. I had to lug that thing to the UPS store yesterday.

Oh no.

Oh no.
I did some digging. This might have to do with complaints about packaging. My U.S. set was packed well, the contents were in perfect condition. I'll just have to wait and see how the E.U. is.

No such issues so far - only two I haven't played are The White Album & Let It Be. If either of those turn out to be dudz I will just re-buy them individually.
Makes me wonder what happened at Amazon. I wonder if they did like a lot of big box stores do, which is send out returns to another customer in the hope that that customer will not return theirs.
This box set has re-ignited my love of vinyl - I love the whole process of sitting down and actually listening to records, keeping the stylus and records clean [treating them with love], rather than having music as background noise.
The consensus seems to be that the noisy pressings begin with Revolver through Past Masters. That was the case with me. The older releases were better.
I hope all your pressings are good. I had to lug that thing to the UPS store yesterday.

My E.U. set came today. The outer Amazon box looked like the dog ate it. The inside cardboard box was fine and the actual box set is fine, including the outer slipcase.
None of the discs are warped, thank goodness. Some poor soul over on the Steve Hoffman forums said he went through 2 E.U. sets and had 5 warped discs on each one!
I listened to Sgt. Pepper's since a lot of folks said there was a lot of distortion on side one. I heard no distortion and I heard nothing else except the music! This is a very quiet disc!
I listened to Abbey Road; again no audio problems and a quiet pressing.
I'm listening to side three of Past Masters right now and all I hear is the music!
A lot of peopled complained of boomy bass on the U.S. pressings; I hear natural bass on these.
So far so good!

Glad to hear it all worked out :)
Enjoy!

Thanks. All I want to do now is enjoy this music and not worry about pressings, warpage, non-fill, etc.

I'm so glad to hear that George! I hope you're continuing to enjoy them.

Kelley, I've now listened to everything except With The Beatles, Beatles For Sale, Help, Yellow Submarine and Let It Be. Even with headphones the discs are quiet; not CD quiet, but very good for vinyl. No distortion so far.
The only record I don't like so much is Rubber Soul because it's the Martin 1987 remix; I prefer the original 1965 mix for the sound even in it's wide separated glory. I hear more detail in the 1965 If I Needed Someone, especially during the guitar solo. Now that was a cd (1965) to cd/lp (1987) comparison, but I would love to get my hands on a 1965 stereo Rubber Soul even though I still prefer that one in mono.
I used to think that the 12 inch cover images in Box Of Vision would satisfy visually, but I have to tell you, having the actual album covers is great. I think vinyl is also a tactile experience as much as aural.
