Help with singing
« on: September 03, 2009, 01:08:50 AM »

Ok, I am performing Hey Jude with my guitar instructors band on the 20th. I will be singing and playing my guitar. I have played guitar on stage before, but I haven't sung on stage before. I am super super nervous!!! Is there anything you could tell me, like any tips? And I basically a beginner singer. So I don't know anything. So please help!  ;D thank you!

Hi Emmi!

If you have a strong heart, try and get access to a machine to record you're singing. A lot of people say, yours truly included, that the "tape" never lies - and if you don't happen to like what you hear, you can work on that part, and get immediate feedback by listening.

Also, a few other tips that I find helpful: Pretend that you are a superstar on stage, not a first time singer. In my case it gives me so much confidence, and I think the best singing is done that way.

Finally, focus on the starting of notes/words/prhases and the endings. I'm just learning more and more about singing, and one thing I've noticed is how smooth professionals end their notes/words/phrases.

Have fun, it sounds like a blast!

That sounds like so much fun Emmi! I wish I could do that  ;D

I was in the choir for the past three years at school so I've learned a few important things that the teacher really tried to drill into our heads.  ;)

I think recording yourself before hand is a great idea! It will really help you hear how your voice really sounds.

Also, make sure your really pronounce the last consinent sound at the end of a word when you sing, like the "d" in Jude, so the audience can understand your singing "Hay Jude" and not "Hey Ju...".

be confident enough to project your voice  :)

Also, you should make sure you're breathing properly when you sing(it really helps you hold notes out longer).  you shouldn't be moving your shoulders when you take a breath, your stomach should be moving out when you inhale and in when you exhale. It helps to lie on your back and breathe to really see this.

About being nurvous...I'm always nervous when I'm on stage even though I've done it a lot. Once you get started playing and getting into the song you should feel less nurvous...just have fun!  ;D

Correct breathing and don't hold back. Let yourself go!

Have a great one. Not much to add. Just close your eyes and let your heart do the rest. ;)

Thanks Alexis! I have been practicing A lot. I know now that I sing in the key of C and that I have a very "folkey" voice. Actually, the songs I can sing best are Bob Dylan songs  :-[ lol. But thanks for your suppport!! :D
