The dinky fretboard of the Hofner is nice to play but you just don't get the grunt and silk of the Riccy.

The viola does make you play in a certain way though. I like em both...Iconic is true about the viola but if I had the choice?...Riccy it would be...Or better still, both!!!! ;)

Another picture of the Rickenbacker. Pictured during the recording of Ram in 1971.

The Hofner viola bass has to be number 1 on my wish list. I paly a copy and it's my favorite bass so I can only imagine how wonderful it msut be to play a real one.

The Ric certainly has that remarkable growl, but the Hofner is jsut great for melodic playing which suits more of my style.

Besides, nothing is prettier than a Hofner bass. Especially with the pickguard off!

There's a picture of George with the Fender Jazz in Lewisohn's book. The Hofner, to this day, has the Beatles final set list taped to the top of it. I seriously doubt that the original Hofner was custom-made, he said he bought it because it was cheap and it was left-handed--it costs plenty to have anything customized and they didn't have any spare change back then. As a lefty, it sucks going into a music store because everything is right-handed, with maybe and exception here and there, I can only imagine how tough it was to find a left-handed guitar/bass was back then. The Rickenbacker was a prototype given to Paul by the family. Thanks for the info Al, very cool research project and well done.
