Thank you for the links. I am a big fan of the original line up.
They were the first band that I ever saw live.
I also got a chance to meet them
and spend some quality time with them at their hotel during their first US visit.
The drummer, Fred Marsden jr, was very kind and friendly to this eleven year old kid. He even invited me to see them again the following week as their guest. It was so sad to hear about his recent passing.

The top Of The Pops clip is pre-recorded, that's what they had to do by musicians union rules. The first clip sounds like it's being played live. So that could be why they sound better in the second clip.

Don't think so. The name on the amp says 'The Pressmen'.

What do we know about The Pressmen?? I can't find anything at Bill Harry's books...
Were they the resident band at Wyvern Club in 1960?? :shock:

But the fact is in that historical day (=1960, May the 10th.: Larry Parness audition at Wyvern Club) some of the amps bear the inscription 'The Pressmen'. Does this mean, then, that Derry & The Seniors had already changed their name from The Pressmen, but not still on the amps?? :shock:

No it can't, as the brand name is Selmer: several of them Truvoice models...
The question remains: were The Pressmen the resident band at Wyvern Club at those days?? ???

The Pressmen came from Wallasey. If you google with 'Pressmen' and 'Wallasey' you will get some nice things. Bill Harry might offer some more information.

I saw Gerry & The Pacemakers last year of all times, when they played in my home town in a tiny venue. Obviously it was no showbusiness affair, considering how long it's been since their heyday and all that, but I really enjoyed it. I'm still wearing the entry wristband! :D
Not only that, but they opened with The Beatles "Got To Get You Into My Life", bizarrely, and also covered "Slow Down". The show was a one night thing called "Back To The Cavern", and it also featured Len "Chip" Hawkes from The Tremeloes, and a Beatles tribute band called The Complete Beatles. I especially liked the George. :P

I watched Gerry's film Ferry Cross The Mersey the other day. It's nice, but it can't compete with A Hard Days Night.

Yes, the Pressmen were a Wallasey band, as was our band, The Undertakers. The leader of the Pressmen was Richie Prescott. He played a homemade solid-body guitar, featuring a classical guitar neck, which he got a hell of a sound of through his Selmer 'Truvoice' amplifier. Their home base was the Kraal Club, in New Brighton, where they played regularly in the basement club. Richie still plays around Liverpool.
Regarding Gerry & the Pacemakers: Our original sax player was Les Mcguire, who left to join Gerry's band, in 1961. Les was another Wallasey lad.
