Title: All Together Now is the single that never was.
Post by: Wayne L. on June 21, 2004, 11:23:56 PM
I think All Together Now is one of the most underrated Beatles rock classics which hardly ever gets mentioned by fans even though it's a great song.  ATN is a song that should have been released as a single back in 68 because it's so campy & catchy instead of being kind of a throwaway track.  The Yellow Submarine soundtrack was a monumental waste of time but All Together Now has that peace & love hippie vibe which would have made it a great single at the time.

The song was far too slight and fey for a single.

Fun tune to sing with tho.

It's a nice, hidden Beatle track that only a few know about. However, it certainly was not single material by any stretch.

I agree with m.c. and Maria.
But it would have been nice to have the four new Yellow Sub songs on an extended single. And such a single would have meant more airplay for this song and Hey Bulldog.
It may well have sold enough to make number one in England where only global sales counted.

I'm of the opinion that this was the Beatles attempt at a Barbara-Ann-style song, ala the Beach Boys Party album - it has that similar 'loose' acoustic feel. I do think it's a great catchy tune, but there are far greater contenders for album tracks that should have been singles.

Everyone else nailed it. Great tune, but not strong enough to become a popularity single.

Much to weak for a single. When I listen to it, I get that feeling that its about 02:00am in the bar and everybody is just loaded having a great time singing.

Absolutely - that's what I meant about the similarities to Barbara Ann by The Beach Boys; that was taken from their Party album, which was pretty much a drunken jam session, or at least that's how it sounded!

Babara Ann got to number 3 in England in 66.It was by far their best rating so far.
The one before - California Girls - only made 26!
So don't knock Ba,ba,ba,ba,barberann...

He's not knocking the song....if you've heard the Beach Boys Party album, then you'd know what he's talking about....it's definitely a very loose affair, with lots of Beatles covers to boot.

Rowdy is right Zipp, I wasn't knocking Barbara Ann at all - I LOVE it! I was simply comparing the style of it to Altogether Now -  informal acoustic jamming.

I have all of The Beach Boys Sixties output, and rate them VERY highly ;D

I think wayne l is one of the most underrated poster classics which hardly ever gets mentioned by fans even though he's a great poster.  wayne is a poster that should have been released as a single back in 68 because he's so campy & catchy instead of being kind of a throwaway type of guy.  The gomer pyle series was a monumental waste of time but wayne has that peace & love hippie vibe which would have made him a great poster at the time.come home wayne the bed is made.............

Many Beatles songs are underatted and would have faired well as singles. Obla Di OblA Da for instance great song and radio favorite. Paul wanted it as a single but the other Beatles vetoed it out of spite.

Vetoed it out of spite! That's a new one! Where did you get that idea from?

But of course, Ob La Di WAS released as a single in many countries (backed with While My Guitar Gently Weeps), where it was a smash hit!

Do you know what countries Maria?  Also, any other singles in other countries that we might not have had released as such?

Maria's right about the releases(I have some import 45s somewhere).

Also, wasn't it released on a U.S. 45 in 1976?

i seem to remember that too Joe.  I think it might have been because some other group scored big with it (but i cant remember who).   Anyway, i find it interesting that the choice of singles for other countries were different than thse picked for UK/US

The single you may be thinking of, Joe, is Got To Get You Into My Life b/w Helter Skelter, off the 1976 Rock 'n' Roll double album compilation. I think it top-tenned at least in the US.
