Another hugely influential figure gone.

"The effect they had on other musicians was immeasurable. The harmonic blend of The Beatles was really John Lennon and Paul McCartney chasing that Everly Brothers sound, Simon and Garfunkel started out as an Everly mimicking duo, Alan Clarke and Graham Nash of The Hollies thought of themselves as a British Everlys and Nash carried that across the Atlantic to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, joining the dots with the sunshine harmonies of the Seventies west coast singer-songwriter generation, from The Mamas and Papas to Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris to the banked harmonies of the Eagles. Wherever you hear harmonies being sung in pop music, you can hear the Everly Brothers."

I'm so glad that they were able to reunite and bring us this Paul McCartney song:

Tremendously sad news, especially as the Brothers' mother, Margaret, has outlived Phil.

Quite apart from the wonderful Cadence hits, their 'Roots' LP from 1968 is an absolute gem.
Also made the only 1980s recording I actually own.....'On The Wings Of A Nightingale'!

I can only think of one other act in popular music bigger (yes, including Dylan) and that is Paul, and even that's debatable.

2014 Is just five days old and we've already lost Phil Everly, Eusebio (legendary soccer player) and Herman Pieter de Boer (famous Dutch writer and lyricist). Not cool.

And hot on the heels of Phil Everly's death has been Eusebio and now Alexandra Bastedo, the actress in 'The Champions'.

Clearly if people are well into their 60s and 70s and, in some cases, 80s, many of the faces of the 1950s and 1960s are going to die, but it's been a lousy start to the year on this front.
