I used to think they were silly but as I got older I came to love them. Marc Bolan is such a great performer.

I remember seeing a video of them on a VH1 show years ago called "Closet Classics" (That's all we 60's buffs had to look at in the days before YouTube). I knew "Bang a Gong" but this was a song called "Jeepster" and I thought it was pretty cool. Turns out, there is a Beatles connection:

"On 18 March 1972, T. Rex played two shows at the Empire Pool, Wembley which were filmed by Ringo Starr and his crew for Apple Films. A large part of the second show was included on Bolan's own rock film Born to Boogie, while bits and pieces of the first show can be seen throughout the film's end-credits. Along with T. Rex and Starr, Born to Boogie also features Elton John, who jammed with the friends to create rocking studio versions of "Children of the Revolution" and "Tutti Frutti"; Elton John had appeared on TV with Bolan before, miming the piano part of "Get it On" on the 1971 Christmas edition of Top of the Pops." This is from Wikipedia...I'm assuming it's true.  ;)

Found a Marc thread - great!

Remember when CDs used to cost £15 in the appalling 1980s?
Well, I bought such an example from my local Scope Charity Shop on Saturday for £1.
T. Rex (actually 75% of it is Tyrannosaurus Rex) - 'The Collection' on Castle Communications from 1986.
Dire artwork (the 1980s, remember) aside, the first 18 tracks are virtually a sampler for Tyrannosaurus Rex's four LPs, and I've now rescued all of them from the back room!

I'm with John Peel on this. Tyrannosaurus Rex - wonderful. T. Rex - ho hum.

Now if only someone (Universal, Sony, EMI???) would put out all of Marc's 60s 45s on one CD.

The first song I was introduced to was Cosmic Dancer. But shameful to say, that is the only song I know of T. Rex!

So is T. Rex actually stands for Tyrannosaurus Rex?

Yes, KE.  The group formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1967.  They shortened it to T. Rex in 1970.

While Marc definitely had his own vocal style (probably not to everyone's taste), the 4 Tyrannosaurus Rex LPs/CDs should find favour with fans of the White Album or even Paul's debut LP.
I suspect that he must have met one or more of The Beatles in the late 60s somewhere in London as both 'Debora' and 'One Inch Rock' were hits.....small hits, but hits.....and they must have had mutual acquaintances/friends.

Ringo was well connected with them. Directed a documentary film about them. I never saw it ('Born To Boogie'), but I'd like to.

Relax Dirk. T-Rex was not such a big name in certain parts of the world and let's be fair, there's not many hit singles by this band. It's not that strange that some people discover bands in a later period.

I wouldn't recommend 'Born To Boogie' particularly, even with the Ringo connection.
A more interesting link is that Marc recorded most of his late 60s stuff at Trident, the same studio where The Beatles recorded 'Hey Jude', so it seems unlikely that he wouldn't have rubbed shoulders with them at least once.

That is a fabulous compilation.

With only a little bit of tweaking (e.g. the inclusion of the b-sides to 'One Inch Rock' and 'Pewter Suitor', and 'Oh Baby' - and its b-side - put on the first disc), those first 26 or 27 or so tracks are EXACTLY what Marc's record company should be putting out as a single CD!

You'd need literally thousands of pounds to get a complete original vinyl run of all those 45s.....the early ones go for a fortune, 3 of the Tyrannosaurus Rex 45s came in promo sleeves, and John's Children's 'Midsummer Night's Scene' was only dished out at gigs in Leatherhead (apparently), and is one of the rarest, and most valuable, 45s ever made in the UK.

Get onto it (or should that be Get It On) Marc's record company!!!!
