-
I adore that song. Have you heard Elvis Costello's version?
No! I would love to hear that! :)
-
Who did it originally?...I have heard that performed acoustic locally and it made me realise what a great song it really is.
-
Christina Aguilera... I like her Strpped album. I think she has a great voice.
-
I'm sure someone else wrote that song. It may be Willie Nelson or someone like him...I'm gonna go check...it's bugging me now.
-
Pretty well wrong.(me) Willie Nelson indeed!!!! ;D It was Linda Perry. Bet she made a mint. lol. Never heard of her.
-
Yeah, Linda wrote it for Christina. I think she won a Grammy for it, too? She's quite good... she's written with a number of artists. She also wrote Get The Party Started! (grin)
-
The last song I was attempting to learn was 'Helplessly Human' from Kansas, but it was kicking my @ss so I put it away for some time.
The last song I learnt realistically was 'Good Lovin Gone Bad' from Bad Company as my buddies wanted to play it. Not a masterpiece in anyways, but a nice rocker anyways.

Just learnt the bass for Monkberry Moon of Macc's RAM. Cheers TK.

This article originally appeared in Reggae Report
JIMMY CLIFF ON RECORD Lee O'Neill
Jimmy Cliff is so firmly identified with The Harder They Come
that his other work gets overlooked and undervalued. He has
been in the forefront of reggae since 1963 and continues to be
a major star all over the world. Although he, has appeared in
four movies, has received a Grammy (and was nominated four
other times) and has had dozens of hit records he is still
struggling to obtain the respect and success of artists with
far less impressive histories.
Cliff, born James Chambers, moved to Kingston as a teenager and
cut several obscure songs with minor producers. In 1963, he
impressed producer Leslie Kong enough to get a couple of songs
on Kong's Beverly's label and both "Dearest Beverly" and
"Hurricane Hattie" became hits. That began a relationship that
lasted until Kong's death in 1971 and marked the real beginning
of Cliff's career. Almost none of his ska material is
available these days, although "Miss Jamaica" has appeared on
several Trojan anthologies.
Cliff was selected to accompany Millie Small (remember "My Boy
Lollipop"?) and Byron Lee and the Dragonaires to the New York
World's Fair in 1965. This trip was designed to introduce ska
to the world and while we all know it just didn't happen, the
trip resulted in a film called This Is Ska, featuring a young
and enthusiastic Jimmy Cliff along with several other stars of
the time. It also brought Cliff to the attention of Island
Records' Chris Blackwell.
Cliff moved to England and Blackwell began grooming him for
international success. Early releases such as Hard Road to
Travel (Island, 1967), Can't Get Enough of It (Veep, 1968) and
Jimmy Cliff (Trojan, 1969) often sounded more like pop-rock
than reggae. It wasn't until Wonderful World Beautiful People
(A&M, 1969) that Cliff began to reach back to reggae for
inspiration and it showed. Cliff's voice is very pretty,
gospel influenced tenor and the Leslie Kong produced Wonderful
World provided him a bright, contemporary sound lightened by
just a few pop touches. The material included reworkings of
earlier hits like "Hard Road to Travel" along with new classics
like the title track and "Vietnam." Another Cycle (Island,
1971) was another rockish effort highlighted by the haunting
"Sitting in Limbo."
It was at this time that The Harder They Come was released.
Cliff's acting was extraordinary and his portrayal of the
archetypal artist/outlaw has achieved mythic status. The film
became a huge cult film in the 1970s and owning the video is
simply obligatory for every reggae fan. The soundtrack was a
near perfect introduction to reggae for novices, featuring the
Maytals, Melodians Slickers, Desmond Dekker, Scotty and Cliff.
His new songs included his own version of "You Can Get It If
You Really Want," a song originally written for Dekker, the
title track and another beautiful ballad, "Many Rivers to
Cross."
On the verge of international success as a result of his role
in Harder They Come, he released a series of increasingly
insipid records that repeated the same mistakes he and
Blackwell made in the early 60s. Unlimited (Trojan, 1973),
House of Exile (EMI, 1974), Music Maker (Reprise, 1974),
Struggling Man (Island, 1974), Brave Warrior (EMI, 1975) and
Follow My Mind (Reprise, 1976) all had desultory mixtures of
soul, pop, rock and reggae and none managed to grow from the
artistic foundation of Wonderful World/Harder They Come. Oh
Jamaica (EMI, 1976) is a collection of the better tracks from
that label. Reggae Greats (Mango, 1985) assembles his best
Island material in once place and is a worthwhile starting
point.
Only in 1976, when the legendary Joe Higgs organized a superb
band of reggae legends supporting Cliff on tour was he able to
rekindle the flame. A live album from that tour, In Concert
(Reprise, 1976) serves as a defacto Greatest Hits for the early
years and features some of his best singing and one of his best
bands. It also seemed to reenergize Cliff and over the next
several years he made some of the most eloquent and exciting
music of his career.
Give Thankx (Warner, 1978) returns to a reggae foundation but
adds some interesting world music accents in places. The
uptempo songs are energetic and the ballads inspiring. As good
as it was, however, it's sales were dismal and it was the last
record Cliff made for the Warner/Reprise label. His next two
albums, I Am the Living (MCA, 1980) and Give the People What
They Want (MCA, 1981) were also strong efforts with solid songs
and fine, contemporary reggae. Again, however, their
commercial reception disappointed and yielded another label
change.
Cliff's third film was Bongo Man, a documentary/concert film.
A bit overlong, it had several sparkling performances and
insightful interviews along with plenty of chances to get some
popcorn. To date, it has not been released on video.
Reggae itself had changed substantially over the years and
while his last three studio albums were among the "purest"
reggae albums of his career, Cliff's reggae was not necessarily
the reggae being played in Jamaica. Special (Columbia, 1982)
changed that. The title track and "Rub a Dub Partner" were
significant hits in Jamaica and the album was the first to
crack the US charts since Follow My Mind. To many, it remains
his best album.
Again, however, Cliff and his label failed to capitalize on a
successful album. Power and the Glory (Columbia, 1983), Cliff
Hanger (Columbia, 1985) and Hanging Fire (Columbia, 1987) all
attracted Grammy attention (Cliff Hanger won in 1985) while
being featureless attempts at creating a universal dance music
out of R&B, Soul and a producer's idea of generic Reggae and
African music. The only bright spot (after Special) in the
1980s was Club Paradise, a movie starring Cliff, Robin
Williams, Peter O'Toole and several Saturday Night Live and
Second City TV veterans. It's a bright comedy and the
soundtrack contains some top-ranking tunes from Cliff,
including "The Lion Awakes," "Third World People" and
"Brightest Star."
Cliff returned to Reggae for inspiration one more time and
Images (Vision, 1989) was his best album in years. It is also
on a small label and received very limited distribution.
Breakout (JRS, 1992) and Samba Reggae (Lagoon, 1993) also
received little US recognition but were both very strong sets
from this reggae legend. His South American popularity led to
some wonderful touches of samba with reggae but this time the
fusion approach worked well. Live 93 (Lagoon, 1993) is another
good concert recording, showing Cliff's uplifting songs to
their best advantage. It's also the last we've heard from him,
apart from his cover of Bob Marley's "Stir It Up" from the Cool
Runnings soundtrack, his cover of Jackie Wilson's "Higher and
Higher" from the Air Up There soundtrack and "Hakuna Matata"
from Disney's "Lion King" soundtrack.
Those songs and his other 90s work indicate that while Jimmy
Cliff may not be as productive as he once was, or as well
promoted as he once was he is still every bit as talented.
That beautiful voice still touches hearts on its way to the
clouds. ??

Green Tambourine- The Lemon Pipers

My two friends and I are doing our first gig together on New Year's Eve (gulp!) , so we are learning lots of new songs together! It's two guitars, and me on a keyboard doing bass with my left hand, and whatever else I can do on the right hand (piano, organ, claves, etc.). I'm having to learn to use my keyboard as more than a simple piano, it's like learning a new language ... plus the time pressure - it's only two weeks away! No drummer, we really need one, but it's hard enough getting three of us together in one room at once (we're all in work release programs, our ankle bracelets start shocking us if we're not back at the facility on time ;) ).
We're doing two Beatles tunes - Get Back, and I Feel Fine. On Get Back I made up a lower John harmony on the last verse (kind of paralleling Paul, but starting on the A instead of the E) , and also the last chorus (also paralleling Paul, but starting on the C# rather than the G). I'm kind of scared about doing it, but hopefully it will work out. One of the other guys likes it, we haven't run it by the 3rd guy yet ...
For our next gig we'll do "Let It Be", and maybe "Maybe I'm Amazed", and definitely "Slow Down", and if I have the guts "Kansas City" or maybe even "Lucille"!
-
Have a great time New years eve amigo....Those I feel Fine harmonies will go down a winner. The pressure of time is the best way to get it together anyway. I speak from experience. hehehe
The secret is to enjoy it. ;)
-

-
How did your gig go Alexis?
i just learnt Terry Callier - Ordinary Joe
Thanks for asking, An Apple Beatle, sorry I missed your post back when!
It was lots of fun, everybody had a great time, we are our own worst critics, people just kicked back. Nothing like Tequila to keep 'em happy!
I'm envious of how many new songs you are learning! Last song I learned is "Rock and Roll", the Jerry Lee Lewis version, we are playing that for our next gig in June. If we ever get together to practice that is ... But if it's anything like last time, you will be right once again, the pressure of time is what will make it come off.
Take care!
-
junk is great for playing
what would be your best suggestion for the chords? to use
-
Cheers amigo, glad the gig was a good un. A lubricated audience always helps or did you mean the tune tequila. ;)
Gotta keep growing. I like to treat cover gigs as paid rehearsals, a study into the art of popular song. Using a golden thread I hope my own voice comes out of the diversity and not unlike Macca, can turn my range to a few tricks. That in turn should hopefully compliment this original music album a few friends and I have been trying to complete and helps finance them endeavours. I get to gig on many different levels which I love and which is why I got to keep it fresh and enjoyable. I still manage to get to play what I like to play and make an existence, which I'm grateful for.
Now getting a a band together for rehearsals...I know them frustrations! Hoping that changes soon when I get moved into some rehearsal premises and office...Well excited. :)
Beatles gig at the festival
next week means I'm heavilly learning the lady madonna bassline and on the side Oh Darling as I have not been able to play and sing it with conviction just yet.
Back on topic....If I Fell in c sharp and And I Love Her in Fminor. Just done an hour and bit Beatle set today at a friends wedding. Lovely day for it....Ok, ramblings over. :)

For some reason, I've always played it in D. Why C# for you ... preference, or is that their actual recorded key?
-
what would be your best suggestion for the chords? to use
am not really sure what all the chords are as there a lot of add ons like f#m7 or something close to it.
i just kind of picked it up from watching another youtuber playing it
ive made a video of me playing it here to help a little the first chord is f#m with an add on on the bottom string 5 fret which is the A note

Yeah me too. I was watching youtube from A hArd Days Night movie with my friend, where we were both unable to play along with the chords we had known. Kinda freaked me a bit playing it today.
-
Nice one Fendertele on the clip. ;)
-
Fabulous, Fendertele! That does look fun to play! I'll have to try it. I'll report back here in 2,000 years to let you know how I'm getting on. :)
-
Nice one Fenders. As the Americans say, you rock!
-
cheers everyone its one of my faves of Maccas :):):):)
-
Thats excellent! sound a lot better then my attempts! very well done!
-
thanks mclennon the technique i find that helps with a lot of macca songs is instead of finger picking i hold my pick like normal and play bass noted wit it and use my ring finger for the highers notes and it means you can go from fingering to rhythm without having to pick up a pick.
i thin its called hybrid picking technique or something
-
That's really interesting, I may have to try that, because It's hard in certain songs, where I try to switch between both, such as for a solo, and Can't use the pick for any finger picking things, for me it would be like trying to use it on blackbird lol!
-
She's Not there - the Zombies vocal & guitar...Classic! :)

Dang dude, raising the key on a Stevie Wonder song ... you must have a high voice!
-
I had to drop out of our band for a few months, now I'm back and this bugger (the bass player) is singing all my high harmonies.
I did the manly thing and smashed his knuckles with a tire iron, and now he can't play, so it's all good.
Just kidding! What I did was decide to either learn or make up a third harmony to every thing. Listening to the Beatles for my whole life has made me believe that there are always two harmonies to add on top of a melody possible. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but I live my life with that.
For example in Norwegian Wood - in the Em bit - John starts going down on the B, and Paul on the high G. So I put a 3rd one in there, more or less parallel to the others, starting on the E. I think it works pretty well, at least the other guys said it could stay. How about that - making up a harmony to a Beatles song, woo hoo!
On "I Feel Fine', on the last verse, I parallel John's voice, but starting down on the G, whereas he's up on the D ("Baby's good to me..."). I'm not sure that one is as much of a keeper. a little droney, but we'll see how it turns out.
It is one of my greatest pleasures in music to write/sing "Beatles-like" harmonies. Does anyone else here get into that?
-
I'll bump up my last one to see if anyone has any helpful comments or discussion - thanks!
-
I'm certainly into Beatle harmonies and especially in non-conventional occasions I will chuck in all kinds of harmonies that may reflect string parts. When the full band plays like the record though, I always found it's best to trust George Martins vibe as it allows space for other instruments to harmonise and to get the magic 'tone.'
There are normally 3 to choose from...Quite often one is buried very low in the mix.
-
hallelujah - Jeff Buckley version, capo on 5th....Nice! :)
-
Tonight You Belong to me....The film 'The Jerk' with Steve Martin & Bernadette Peters inspired me....what a film moment.
Love that song, loved the whole movie, and that one part stands out in my mind more than any other, like 10 years later.

Learning the keyboard parts to "Sweet Home Alabama", one of our new songs.
We're trying to decide what "very slow-dance song(s)" we're going to introduce. We've got one, "Wonderful Tonight". I'm hoping to bring in "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel. It'll be a challenge to find the right sound on my Motif, and be able to play and sing it at the same time, but I think it's doable with mucho practice ...

I've had to learn a ton of Christmas songs for church the past month. Some were tough (or I made them harder than they needed to be).
Ever trying playing the drums to 'O Holy Night'? Brutal! It wouldnt seem so, but that songs everywhere.

It astounds me how persistently sh*te I am at playing "Julia"... I learnt it months ago but I can never quite get it all the way through.
I think it's the shapes of the chords... I'm not the most articulate guitarist so I always go to jump to the next chord and end up mashing it in the rush to get there. I can play it all the way through but there's big pauses in it. >:(

LOL. Under everything everyone posts, there's a little thing that says "Like" And if you actually do like it, you press the link and it informs them you liked their post. It's virtually pointless, but it's kinda fun. ;)

I'm a complete beginner at guitar, but I'm teaching myself 'My Sweet Lord' by George Harrison

'Une Belle Histoire' by Michel Fugain. It's a fairly simple song, but even without vocals or other instruments the plain chords on guitar sound beautiful.

That is one of my personal favourites. Did you know that it was extensively inspired (Ahum. Scraping throat sounds) from La peregrination" by Ariel Ramirez?
Right now, I am working on a pretty and interesting transcription of Singalong Junk for classical guitar.

Does anyone know of any video lesson or something like that to help me play Mother Nature's Son? I find the tab too hard to do, I can't get to the positions in time so I've never been able to play it! And I've got it from the massive Beatles Complete Scores book which is amazing, but I can't do it. I love MNS but I just can't do it. I'm such a crap guitarist really. :'(

Hi guys !! Just learnt "Here comes the sun" , took a few hours but following one my favourite teachers on Youtube was a great help especially with those descending notes played after George sings, "I say ... it,s alright" well worth enduring with I found, as my guitar playing is a constant "work in progress" but my two Epiphones(Casino and John Lennon replica acoustic models) are my most treasured possesions and I love 'em !!! Just rememberd , at the O2 concert last Monday Paul asked the audience who had learnt "Black Bird" on guitar and I proudly raised my hand , with quite a few others, the number of which suprised me !
-
Welcome to the forum, Rooftopconcert! It's nice to have someone new in this corner of the board.
I've found YouTube instructional videos helpful too.
