Title: Arlo Guthrie
Post by: Herecomesyoursun on March 12, 2005, 05:24:55 AM
Anybody like him?  Alice's Restraunt is a great song, and has a cool message too.  He has some really good tunes and often has funny little lines, like in The Motorcycle Song.  Opinions...

yes he wrote the ballad of the city of new orleans.arlo is woody guthries son.woody wrote this land is your land and many more.i saw arlo in concert with his daughter, sarah, his son and son in law were there too.
arlo grew up listening to led belly, pete seeger and alot of other big timers who were friends with woody.
he also shares my distaste for dylan.
after the show he ALWAYS signs autographs.i count myself lucky to have saw,met and talked to this hippy icon....

I like his classic performance of Coming Into Los Angeles from Woodstock along with his hippie rap which defines the times.

yeah arlo is still alive and touring.he has a web site with all the updates....http://www.arlo.net/
i think woody had a bad time with the warren commision, them saying he was a communist or something.even sadder is that i think bob dylans major influence was woody.
they knew each other.

You heard this quote from Arlo Guthrie:

"Suppose they gave a war and no-one came ?

arlo's great.  I really like the album "Amigo" which has got a great cover of the Stone's "Connection."

I don't think Arlo's got a problem with Bob--he's covered a bunch a Dylan tunes.

bob use to be friends with arlo.and when woody was dying bob use to go visit him in the hospital with a pad and pencil.that tells me that he was either a sketch artist or he was stealing ideas again.

Maybe woody was goving him ideas.  or wanted him to write things down.  you dont give bob a break.

I love that quote by Arlo too.  Suppose they gave a war and no one came

Yeah, they used that on posters in the 60's, but the whole poem is: Suppose they gave a war, and nobody came? Why then, the war would come to you.
Some german writer wrote it as sort of a warning to the french right before the Natzi invasion. I thought that was interesting when I learned that.

I like Alice's Restaurant the song and movie... Great stuff...

I haven't gotten into his music and probably won't, but I respect his contributions to the conterculture.

And Bob Dylan is the greatest mainstream folk musician, regardless of anything...
