Has anyone seen this yet?
I'd be grateful if someone could post up the 500.
It truly is a bizarre list which appears to have been concocted by a group of under 40s who (a) have never heard of Rock 'n' Roll (a bad thing), and (b) actively despise the Led Zeppelin/Genesis/Floyd/prog end of the scale (not such a bad thing and something which I largely share with them!).....Led Zeppelin only have two entries!
The Beatles' positions are as follows:
2. 'Revolver'
9. 'White Album'
34. 'Abbey Road'
43. 'Rubber Soul'
87. 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'
133. 'Plastic Ono Band' - John
195. 'A Hard Day's Night'
227. 'Imagine' - John
264. 'Please Please Me'
333. 'Band On The Run' - Paul
For the record, the only 60s group who have my own favourite LP of theirs in the list is The Beatles with 'Please Please Me'.
All my other favourites ('Velvet Underground', 'Axis', 'Scott 3', 'Another Side of Bob Dylan', 'Out Of Our Heads') are missing!

It truly is a bizarre list
I dont see the point in even reading these things personally, its only somebody's opinion - which is usually different than mine
I really couldnt give a fcuk if somebody thinks Bananarama's LP is better than Revolver :D
-
I hate lists!
Who's Bananarama?

I hate lists!
Who's Bananarama?
from the 70's, the highest selling girl group in the UK

from the 70's, the highest selling girl group in the UK
They covered Venus, right?
-
Fair enough if that's your take on it, but The Beatles - with 2 entries in the Top 10 - don't come out badly at all.
-
Bananarama didnt make it big over here in the US until the 80's. 'Cruel Summer' was their big hit and I actually love that song. Lots of good memories to it.

All my other favourites ('Velvet Underground', 'Axis', 'Scott 3', 'Another Side of Bob Dylan', 'Out Of Our Heads') are missing!
It is indeed very curious that they left out that album, yet included all the three others (VU&Nico, Wl/Wh, Loaded). In my opinion, both the self-titled 3rd and Loaded are a bit overrated (though still great), but then I'm more of a Cale-era fan. Also really glad that they included Lou Reed's Berlin - one of my all-time favourites and easily up there with anything the man's ever done. I just recently watched the 2008 Berlin concert film and, even though I wasn't expecting much, was moved to tears several times. Such a powerful story. And Lou's still got it.
I don't really have the time/interest to read the whole list, but I did some quick searches on my favourites and they were mostly all there. The bias towards prog is way too obvious, of course, but other than that, it looks like an all right list.
-
Look again - it's the ABSENCE of prog/70s stuff that is the main feature.
'Led Zep', 'Led Zep 2', 'Houses of the Holy', 'Physical Graffitti', Yes, Queen, Genesis, King Crimson, 'Meddle', 'The Wall', 'Wish You Were Here', Jethro Tull.....all normally shoe-ins for a list like this.....all missing.
It's obviously a hatchet job by the 12 year olds who currently work on the NME but I can't say I miss them!
I've had a hard week and I'm currently amusing myself by concocting playlist of my own that ISN'T on the NME list.
First up, The Beach Boys 'Smile'.
Don't want the Brian Wilson one (at 481), I want the '66/'67 one.
'Smile' has to be there. Any other suggestions?
-
'Fire of Unknown Origin' - Blue Öyster Cult
'Number 5' - Steve Miller Band
'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are DEVO' - DEVO
For starters.

I've only heard of 6 artists/groups in the top 20. :)
-
I told you that!
You probably did. I must have been only sleeping.

Here's a strange omission: 'Music from Big Pink' by The Band.
Their 2nd LP is at No. 83, but usually you can't get a cigarette paper in between them.
If you see one of them in a 'best of' list, you can bet your house that its partner will soon follow.
What's happened is the NME staff have sat round a table and thought, 'Hmmm, 'two' LPs by The Band.....why don't we just put in the one, and then we'll be able to shoe-horn in another pasty white English indie group from 1993 that no one outside their immediate family, and us, has ever heard of'!
So for me that's......
The Beach Boys - 'Smile'
The Band - 'Music from Big Pink'

Yeah, that's what I meant by "bias towards prog".

Unfortunately, there is no official 66/67 'Smile' and whether the 2011 Box-Set is a fair inclusion is debatable. It is, after all, an archival release.
-
Yes, fair enough about 'Smile', but the core release was the 19-tracks on the first CD.
That's the 'Smile' I mean, not the 4 CDs afterwards.
There's no reason why that can't be included and, although there is zip chance of me actually hearing it, 'Hatful of Hollow' by The Smiths was, I believe, a bunch of BBC sessions, and that's in the list.

They covered Venus, right?
I told you that!
I wondered how Barry knew that! ha2ha

Although I'd offload a few to the local charity shop, I'd much rather have that Top 100 from 1974 to the NME Top 500 from last week. For starters I'd have Chuck Berry, The Miracles and The Impressions instead of Madonna and Whitney Houston.
It's also rather satisfying to see a few of the more marginalised 60s albums in there - Joni Mitchell's debut, The Doors' 'Strange Days', Traffic's 'Mr. Fantasy' and The Byrds' '5th Dimension'.

Also Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit and Crown Of Creation by Jefferson Airplane, which are ignored in present lists. But it's strange not to see Surrealistic Pillow by the latter band.

It´s a mystery to me how Depeche Mode´s Violator is ranked so low. It´s a masterpiece:

I can forgive you for not knowing who The Cardigans are, I don´t think they were that big in the US, but do you really not know Depeche Mode?! :)

I honestly never heard of them, Brynjar. But, remember, I "tuned out" a great deal of music after The Beatles broke up. Also, the only radio station I've listened to since 1972 is WCBS-FM which has an "oldies" format.
I'm happy this way. :)
