Some say that Queen`s music is not rock but pop. Freddie said " The music press have been pretty unfair to us. We are basically a rock band. " What do you think?

I think their first three albums are very much in the rock vein. I used to listen to them on the John Peel Show in the early 70's, before their first album came out, and they played some pretty heavy duty stuff. After that I'd say that they were fairly unclassifiable, verging on pop. Freddie could hardly say that the likes of 'Killer Queen', 'Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy', 'Fat Bottomed Girls', 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love', 'Another One Bites the Dust', and 'Under Pressure' were not firmly in the pop mould.

I remember them being written off as Led Zepplin wannabes, and I agree with BM that they originated as your standard heavy rock band, but then morphed into a pop band.

Rock-a-pop and glam-rock? "Glamour is part of us, and we want to be dandy..." Freddie Mercury.

I always saw them as rock but with glam influences.

Thanks JMfan a lot! Since I am a Queen fan as well, I will certainly buy the record. And an interesting thing I learned from your source  is that all of them write songs. As far as I know Roger Taylor didn`t write any songs (or few?) when with the Queen. It`s a pity John Deacon left them cause his songs were fantastic: Another One Bites The Dust, You`re My Best Friend, Spread Your Wings (I adore it!) etc. I`ve read in this forum that Paul Rodgers has a very good vocal. Is it true, cause I`ve never heard him sing? Is he real good? I am getting excited! What if the Queen is restoring to life?

No problem. "Wishing Well" was originally a Free song but I think the Q + PR version kicks Free's version out of the water.

Jimmy, you see I am already here! Can`t miss a chance of speaking about Queen! Thanks for the interview. Great guys they are. After Freddie I love Brian, and I should notice that he hasn`t changed much, even his hair is the same. He doesn`t look his age. Roger looks oldish but well. Paul looks good with the fellows and matches them well.
I am going to buy the new album this weekend. Very much hope it`s good!  :)

Useless music trivia post # 714:  Brian May has a Ph.D. in astrophysics!

I think I read he interrupted his studies in the 70's to see if this band he was invited to be in might make a go of it. Only recently did he finish up, publish his thesis, and get his diploma.

Congrats Dr. May   :) :)

Congratulations, Brian May! I knew I could spot intelligent guys at once! Can`t wait for their concert.

Alexis, if you write songs (I remember your mentioning it), you should play some musical instrument as well. What is it?  :)

Hi Jane - Well, I grew up playing piano, and now I play a synthesizer so that I can get sounds of different instruments as well. I am in a very part time band that plays mainly 60s/70/s80s rock - we play a few Beatles songs too! I also play harmonica a bit, I of course started playing that because John played it ...  :)

A very musical man you are, Alexis! I understand this is your hobby. And a great one! Where do you play, at some cafes or private parties? Do you sing as well?
And to stay with the thread - do you play Queen?

Have just listened to Paul Rodgers on VH-1. He gets me, guys! I like his songs very much! Queen`s concert is approaching. Like in an old song: it gives me fever in the morning, it gives me fever in the evening...
