I agree, I love this song. Especially Paul's vocals. Another song I really like from Beatles For Sale that I think is underrated is I Don't Want To Spoil The Party. The harmonies are beautiful.

I like the song, but I hate the sound of Ringos drums on it. I usually love the sound of his drums, but they sound like cardboard on this tune.

While the dulled drums don't add to the song for me, they don't detract from it at all either, in my opinion. I love this song, and album in general. I love the melodies of the guitar and vocals.

Didn't some band (The Who maybe?) have their drummer bang on a cardboard box on one song to achieve some sort of desired effect?  ha2ha

I love this song. Paul's voice is so sexy. The drum beat is different as well.

On further reflection, I do quite like the dulled drums. I like the sound a lot.

thanks for getting me to relisten to this song, L.S.F - good song/good thread  ;yes
the parts i always remembered are how the backing vocals shout the first word of each line in the verses
and the awesome melody/chord progression and how happy paul sounds when he's singing
listening now though i hear how the drums sound more muted/muffled than some other beatle hits.
the guitar sounds kinda loud in the mix too.
this song definitely doesn't have the attention to production/mixing of earlier hit singles they released
which is why it's ironic that the solo drum part is such a direct reference to the phil spector girl group sound. i think if the beat was just a little different, this song would have stood on its own more with fans . ..
the beat and shouting words are right off please mr postman which they themselves cover
the lyrics get lost in the mix too. "what youre doin / feelin blue and . (lonely)" --that's advanced  :)
also the rollickin piano arpeggios in the middle sound kind of haunted house and old timey. that definitley keeps this song from bein a single with mass appeal  :(
i dont know if the beatles or their team felt this because it's the second to last song on the Bside of beatles for sale.

i'd love to hear a live version of this or a demo but i didn't find anything on youtube . .
UPDATE -
did find another version and john is all over it! sorry paul fans (of which i am one)
, but THAT'S what i'm talkin about ;yes ;D

A message to Paul fans, who seem to have surprisingly sensitive ears: Just about everything Saint Paul... er, I mean, Sir Paul recorded from 1958 until 1969 runs the risk of having John "all over it." ...and I am not sorry.   ;)

Just so you know, not all of us Paul fans (well, I'll just speak for myself I suppose) see Paul as "Saint Paul" and hate anything John did or was involved with.

:) Yay!

I love John, too. I adore Paul, but no, I don't view him as a "saint."

Anyway, I truly enjoy this song, it's so catchy!!

Looking through old posts as I'm new to the forum and the part of this song I really like is Georges descending guitar part as it is used again ascending for the intro of Everybody's Got Something to Hide...(phew) Except for Me and My Monkey by John this time (I assume).

Thinking back on this song, the guitar solo is just awful. The kind of sh*t that p*sses me off actually. Who thought that was good in the studio? Seriously?

It is a bit over recorded. Some times his Rickenbaker can penetrate to a deeper part of your brain. Chalkboard effect.
