Pete Townshend - Empty Glass
« on: August 25, 2011, 07:39:35 PM »

I was recently getting into Empty Glass, the first solo album by Pete Townshend, released in 1980 between the Who albums Who Are You (1978) and Face Dances (1981). I think it's really good, the Who album that never was, in fact I think it's even better than Face Dances (and much much better than It's Hard). I don't like many albums from the 1980's (neither those from ex-Beatles), but this is an exception.

It's a great album. Every track is good, and most rank among his finest works.

I always liked Pete's voice better than Roger's, too. It's better than a The Who album.

I think Roger's voice is just different from Pete's. None of them is a great singer, but I think Roger's voice fitted better to the Who's music. And I wouldn't go so far saying that Empty Glass is better than the Who albums, at least it's not better than the albums made with Keith Moon in my opinion, though it may be better than the Who records released after Keith's death.

On second thought I'd have to agree with most of that. 'Empty Glass' is good, but the earlier The Who albums are so iconic, it's wrong to put it ahead of them. Roger, too, is definitely inseparable from their classic sound. I guess I was thinking of some demo versions of certain The Who songs where Pete sang lead and I felt that I enjoyed them better.

Anyway, 'EG' and its follow-up 'All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes' mark a real creative high point for Pete, in my view.

Yes, I wasn't very surprised by the quality of Pete's solo work since he was the main force of the Who. Of course, the other members and their talent were very important for the Who's sound, but they were almost Pete's backup band.
