Flaming Pie is 10!
« on: May 04, 2007, 10:24:27 PM »

So it's the 10th Anniversary of Macca's Flaming Pie album this week!
10 years already, where does time go? What did you think of the album & still do?
It's one of my fav Macca albums ever, a fully crafted well put together album. :)

'Flaming Pie' is amazing. Its my 2nd favorite that Paul ever did behind RAM. I still say that 'Somedays' is the best song Paul ever wrote.

It starts reasonably well but it tails off toward the end.

We'll have to agree to disagree there I suppose. I just looked at the track listing and I cant really find many faults in the second half of the album.

8. Heaven On A Sunday  (not great and I hate Pauls drums, but guitar solo is cool)
9. Used To Be Bad  (rocking duet with Steve Miller)
10. Souvenir  (great tune with powerful buildups,,,typical Macca)
11. Little Willow  (Weakest track on the album even if it is a tribute tune)
12. Really Love You  (a fun rocker, but nothing earth breaking)
13. Beautiful Night (probably the best song on the album and one of Pauls better efforts)
14. Great Day  (nice little dity from the 70's)

My overall review

1. Songs we were singing: Great lovely opener with nice lyrics.
2. World Tonight: one of Macca's rockiest songs ever, love the whole sound of the song.
3. If You Wanna: Good song even though Steve Miller steals the song with his guitar.
4. Somedays: one of Macca's masterpieces with excellant lyrics. Beautiful!
5. Young Boy: Fine song, simple lyrics & steve miller offers an excellant solo.
6. Calico Skies: Another Macca masterpiece. his voice is so beautiful & the guitar sound is amazing!
7. Flaming Pie: even though its the title track, it's my least fav on the album with not so great lyrics
"cut my toes off to spite my feet? eh macca" :-/
8. Heaven on the Sunday: one of my personal favs & it a lovely track. love linda's backing vocals
                                      & james mcCartney's solo.
9. Used To Be Bad: Great duet & his best duet ever in my opinion. forget stevie wonder & wacko jacko. :X
10. Souvenir: Not a bad song but not one of his best.
11. Little Willow: Beautiful, what more can i say.
12. Really Love You: Good sounded track & Ringo's drumming is ace! but the song dosen't
really go anywhere. but it was a jam of course.
13. Beatiful Night: My fav track on the album & it's so beatle-ly. i get very emotional
                           listening to it.
14. Great Song: Nice little ditty to end this excellant album. simple & charming. ;D

Overall, it's a big fav of mine & a definitive in Macca's back catalouge.
10 years on & it brings back good memories for me! ;)

1. The song we were singing:
A really good opener of a song, one you kinda feel you have heard already!

2. The Wolrd Tonight:
a good beat throughout with clever lyrics!

3. If you wanna:
a great guitar which gets more catchy as the song goes along!

4. Somedays:
a lovly gentle song which makes me think he is talking of his past with the beatles

5. Young Boy:
A nice song which fits into the album nicely!

6. Calico Skies: my personal favorite from the album, a grand guitar and lovly lyrics of love!

7. Flaming Pie:
a simple tune which has a good beatle meaning in it!

8. Heaven on a sunday:
another catchy tune which seems to be meaningful from paul.

9. Used to be bad:
a different sounding voice from Paul, nearly doesn't sound like him, sounds a bit rolling stones like!

10. Souvenir:
Not as strong a song but very similar to a few of the earlier songs!

11. Little willow:
a really nice little song, reminds me of Junk and somedays from this album! a typical little paul song!

12. Really Love you:
a bit more of a rocky song from Paul, shows he was having fun on this one!

13. Beautiful Night:
Sounds quite modern and another good ballad song.

14. Great day:
a suitable song to close the album, nice little guitar and good backing vocals! reminds me some what of heart of the country!

This is fine.

4. Somedays:
Beautiful McCartney.

5. Young Boy:
Catchy, good single.

6. Calico Skies:
A sweet little McCartney tune.

7. Flaming Pie:
This is kinda off the wall weird. I like.

I think it definately tails off. The first half is very good, but then it goes a bit pear shaped for me. I do like Beautiful Night though.

I was a teenager when this album was released. I love it. I think that Paul was composing great songs by that time. But I hope he's still doing with his new bran album. The way he recorded both is quite similar and the songs that he included in Flaming Pie were from some years before the recording, the same as with the next release: Memory Almost Full. I have my fingers crossed. The two singles are quite good and the reviews I've read here are very good so I'm excited!

A masterpiece from an old man that had nothing to proove ... this was his best album in many years and his decision about the colaborations with Sir George and Ringo was right ... I wish George were there too!

Me too. It's not only the songs, is also the spirit of this album. Just having the booklet in my hands it feels so peaceful (like heaven on a sunday...  ;)). No, seriously. It's such a beautiful record. Really good songs, much better than Off The Ground or Flowers in the Dirt. If you hear closely, even the sound quality is similar to the Beatles albums.

The only sad thing is that it reached #2 in the UK and in the US. It was just one spot behind the poll position in both countries. Really sad.
