Title: More unseen pictures
Post by: Bobber on January 25, 2006, 12:07:48 PM
Previously unseen: The Beatles at rest

The photojournalist Michael Peto, a dyed-in-the-wool socialist, was more interested in capturing coal mines on film than the Beatles as he established his formidable reputation in Britain in the 1960s. In fact the many rolls he shot of the band relaxing during breaks in filming Help! in 1965 did not even make it to picture editors' desks. They ended up instead in the back room of a university's archives.
The world can now see what the newspapers missed. Three years after Peto's pictures were unexpectedly discovered by archivists at Dundee University, a selection of the best will go on show in London on Thursday, as part of the launch of a book of Peto's Beatles images, entitled Now These Days Are Gone, published by Genesis Publications.
The exhibition at the Hoopers Gallery in Clerkenwell Close is curated by one of Peto's students and prot

:o I'm surprised about how many short-sighted ones existed at that time ... BTW I'm more surprised about the new found treasures they are discovering every year ... hope the well's not going to dry up.  ;D

Thanks for sharing this, Bobber ... Sure that those pics are awesome.

Opnieuw bedankt, Bobber.

That pic of George eating ice-cram is cool. I don't know why but Rubber Soul came to my mind instantly when I saw that one.

I'm not saying these were unseen but ... were are they?  ??) (obviously by 1969) ... waiting for Bob's concert to start (Festival of the Isle of Wight, August 31, 1969)? ... but where's Ringo then?  ??)

^ Can you verify Isle of Wight? there are a few Indian looking people though that makes me think it might not be.
If it is the Island then I will hunt down that fireplace! lol

Oh, I haven't got a clue about the place  :-/ ... I was just guessing  :B ... by the look it has to be about the end of summer or begining of autumn of 1969 and there's not much info about them being together by that time ... and less doing things like the ones shown in the pics ...

That looks like it might be India to me. The windows don't look particularly English. Looks more like a colonial building than an English one. There appears to be no sign of Ringo either, unless I've missed him.

By the beards, are you with me that it has to be end of summer or autumn 1969? ... they were into Indian things again by mid 1969 ... spice-alley John and George ... could it be a Hare Krishna Temple or something like that but in England?! I think so ...

Taking a look here:

Did George have that big f*uck off house of his by then? It could be there. I seem to remember that he gave some of it over to Radha Krishna Temple.

I have a book called The Unseen Archives, filled with pictures from the archives of the Daily Mail. It contains a picture of Yoko preparing food in a kitchen, wearing the exact same clothes and bandana as pictured above. Text with the photo says: "Yoko gets to grips with her new kitchen as she and John finally take up residence at Tittenhurst Park, a 60-acre estate with a mansion near Ascot. Cost: 145,000 pounds." A Dutch chronology book said (-translated for you-): "George and Patti, Ringo and Maureen, John and Yoko, Neil Aspinall and Mal Evans visit a concert of Bob Dylan on the Isle of Wight. After that, the complete group (including Dylan) flies to Tittenhurst Park by helicopter."
The Daily Mail book shows pictures of George with members of the Indian group alongside Yoko's picture. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but could the Raxo's pictures by taken at Tittenhurst?

P.S. By the way, I've lost the famous pic of John (with Yoo) George and Ringo (and I think some of their wives too) sitting atending to Bob's concert in August 1969 ... but their looks were very very similar to the ones shown in the pics I've posted here ... I think they are all from about the same time: end of August - September ... [...]

Well, I was talking about this pic ...

And I think the clothes John and Yoko are wearing in the first pics and in the one at the concert are the same ... so I think you're right ... it seems that it should be Tittenhurst ... the funny thing is that they are sitting in the floor ... tired of the journey?  ;D

It was just a joke about the two events ... now that I believe they happened the same day ... but thanks for the info  :) ... did those indians attend Bob's concert too?
Title: Re: More unseen pictures

Probably not. Indians and Bob are hard to mix. And they were busy invading Tittenhurst.

John's Tittenhurst Park had windows like those ... and even bigger:

I don't think it's Tittenhurst (which is described as Georgian).  In Tittenhust the windows (especially the groundfloor, where it looks like the Beatle photos are set) are tall floor to ceiling type, with distinctive down-the-middle frames. Our unseen photos don't look like this - with the little frames it looks older (tudor?). Also the magnificent fireplace definately looks pre-Georgian (god bless the internet). Also the room looks shabby - peeling plaster -nothing like the other interior shots.

Well, it was a huge mansion with lots of rooms ... I think John and Yoko made bigger rooms out of the smaller ones and this pic could be from those early days when that was not done yet ... they moved there that summer precisalley ...

... or maybe they're at Friar's Park? ... that could fit well too (indians and windows)  ;D
... but not the dates  :-/

Ah, speculations, speculations ...

"Originally, the main house comprised many small (well, smallish) rooms, but walls were ripped out at John and Yoko's request to create more open space."
from here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/pob41.html  (Yoko said it somewhere too)

"May 04
Sunday Maclen, on behalf of John, buys `Tittenhurst', at Sunningdale, Ascot, Berkshire, for 145,000 pounds.

Aug 11
Monday John and Yoko move to `Tittenhurst'."

I meant that you cannot tell from the picture whether the rooms are large or small. No need to bring another dozen links.

Who's the blonde with the excessive knitwear? Patti?
And wasn't Bob supposed to be there. Would have been a great photo-op.
And they flew back to Tittenhurst by helicopter. Either the Indians were waiting, or that was some f***-off big chopper.

I understood that you thought that my remark about John and Yoko and the huge rooms was a speculation ... but if you read again my reply I was trying to explain that maybe the image of that particular room is somewhat shabby because they were making improvements in the house ... well, it doesn't matter  :) ...

That's the thing: where's Ringo and why all those indians there? ... the indians could have came after John and George and the others and Ringo left ... speculations again  ;D

From a book with archives of the Daily Mirror:

John, George and Ringo with Yoko, Pattie and Maureen watching JBob Dyaln on stage at the Isle of Wight Pop Festival on 1 September. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were due to stay with Dylan at the sixteenth-century farmhouse he'd rented on the island. 'The Beatles have asked me to work with them', said Dylan on 27 August.

But then: John and George could have come together with the Indians anywhere before they left to pick up Ringo and go to the festival.
