Title: Magical Moments
Post by: Kevin on January 31, 2005, 12:23:42 PM
Talking about the trumpets on Loves Forever Changes got me thinking about those moments in songs that really get you, the bits you listen out for no matter how much you've heard the song.
For me, Beatlewise, its:
-the Blisters on my fingers ending of Helter Skelter. Unforgettable.
-going into the 3rd verse of A Day in the Life, after the 1st big "thingy"
-when the guitars crash in on the main part of Band on the Run
-the 1st na na nas on Hey jude

oops-I meant after Paul's refrain
ps-I hate the way he emphasises tthe word "smoke"-not very subtle

I really like the emphasis, almost highlighting the comfortbale situation being a Beatle affords.

Tomrow never knows when john says " turn off your mind and float downstream"

taxman- 1... 2 ..3 ..4 when they count at the beginging

In my life : when john starts out with perfect words "there are places i remember" and also the little piano solo

It wont be long- the very beginging when john screams "it wont be long ya!"

Dear prudence- how it has that little noise from back in the ussr and goes to that beatifull guitar

I also like Ringo's little spoken bits like "Rock on George, one time for Ringo" in 'Honey Don't'. Also, when he kind of realizes that 'If You've Got Troubles' wasn't really going anywhere and says "Rock on, anybody".

Of course, we all have our favourite songs. But I'm sure there are details in songs that really give you the thrills. Just a couple of seconds from a song that you love to hear.
For instance.
In I'm Only Sleeping, John is singing the line 'keeping an eye on the world going by my window'. I love the moment when Paul's coming in to sing the background vocals on 'going by my window'. Magical moments!
Just curious what your few seconds of awesome details are.

At the end of Revolution (single version), when John screams 'alright' several times, and the electric guitar is screeching even more than Lennon's voice!

Ringo's drumfills in A Day In The Life.

The echo of the music in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band from it being recorded in the bigger Studio 1, and the way in which Macca's 'Whoo' before the vocals start echoes so excitingly!

Pauls bass in the fade out (you can hear pretty good with the old headphones) of the song 'Magical Mystery Tour'

Ringos drum fills in 'Paperback Writer' as he ends them on the rims.

John and Paul singing at the same time (their different verses) on 'I've Got A Feeling'

The piano going up and down the keys in 'Dear Prudence' after Paul does his crazy little drum segment.

John's singing on 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' (well everything for that matter).

Pauls guitar solo in 'Taxman'

Johns guitar solo in 'Hey Bulldog'

John, Paul, and Georges guitar solo in 'the End'

George's singing and guitar playing on 'Here Comes The Sun' (I have a new appreciation for this song)

many, many, more,,,,

I love this thread!!

Here's some I can think of:

The horn parts in For No One
The way John's uses his voice in ADITL. Especially the 'news' part. And of course the aaaahhh's.
The way John sounds when he sings 'row' in I Am the Walrus and 'happiness' in HIAWG and the last 'beautiful' in Dear Prudence. Talk about chills.
The guitar intro to Revolution and Paul's scream.
Paul's voice when he sings 'his rival it seems' and 'but Daniel was hot' in Rocky Racoon and the ahhs he adds at the end of corner and revival
The 'Like You' in Love Me Do
The intros to Eight Days a Week, I've Got a Feeling, Sgt. Pepper, and Baby, You're a Rich Man. Man I love the guitar intro to Sgt. Pepper.
The transition of Polythene Pam to She Came in Through the Bathroom Window. That aww look out part and so on is just so cool!
The oh, oh, ooo, yeah at the end of WMGGW.
The ending to I Am the Walrus. The way it builds up is sooo cool. And that chooba chooba thing. What is that?? It's just so cool.

And then I agree with sever already mentioned. The guitar solo in Let It Be as well as Paul's voice in it, Paul's backing vocals in I'm Only Sleeping and Ringo's drumming in ADITL to name a few.

Actually, the entire song Let It Be gives me the chills.

Definately the intro to the Let it be version of "I've got a feeling". I've never heard that intro duplicated sucessfully. I also love the "I've got a feeling..A feeling deep inside..oh yeah..oh yeah..Dats right!".(Paul McCartney is so cool lol) Another part I love is how he shouts "Yeah!!" throughout the song..makes you want shout with him. I love that short guitar solo in the middle of the song and the bass in the whole song.

I love the blaring intro to "Helter Skelter"...you know exactly what song it is when it starts. The harmony vocals by John and George are suberb "Da Da Da Da!" and the "Aaah!!", no one will ever be able to do the harmony vocals as superb as them...no one. I love when Ringo joins on the drums on 0:06 of the song, and of course Ringo's "I've got blisters on my fingers!!"

I'll post more when I can think of some lol

- Ringo's heavy drumming part in Strawberry fields forever.
- "Get baa-aa-a-ack!!"
and the rambling Paul does in the end.

Paul's intro to While My Guitar Gently Weeps as well as his backing vocals and oooo at the end. And I assume it's him doing the very last Yeah Yeah thing, so that too.

Can I just say Paul in general? Because basically anything he's connected to ends up being magical.  ;D

Paul making the shooting sound in the take of Rocky Raccoon of the anthology! and the "sminkin?" bit!

the "la la la" at the end of misery!

One of the ultimate magical moments for me is when Paul roars in 'Golden Slumbers' on 'awake you' - I think it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard- the way he goes from completely soft to this INCREDIBLE roaring quality of his voice- makes me shudder

and I simply LOVE the way that in 'I wanna hold your hand' they go 'I feel happy inshide' (as in the way they say 'inside' HAH shide- so cute  :)

Paul's voice on 'she's a woman too- when he says 'cry' and 'eye' but its more like 'craa' and 'ahh' and it makes me very happy

When Paul says 'wine' on 'A Taste of Honey' its like 'whaine' lol and when he says not 'sweeter' but 'shweeder'

In 'chains' when George sings 'can't run around' and his voice goes cool

The 'whoaawhoooa' and 'doo daa dooo' in 'Do you Want to Know a Secret'

The clapping all the way through 'Eight Days a Week'

'She's got a ticket to RIIIIDE and she don't care' - the way they sing ride

'SOoooooo long' on day tripper

Paul and John singing together in 'we can work it out'

When the guitar kicks in in paperback writer

Paul's ad libbing on the end of Hey Jude

'I don't knoooow IIIIIIII don't KNOW' on Something- one of the most amazing things in the world

'Come together right now over me'

The 'ooohh' ing in the background of 'let it be' and when Paul goes up on 'shine until tomorrow'

'I told you before OOHHHHH you can;t to that' - the 'ooooh' it great

'Because the sky is blue it makes me cry' on 'Because'- sung beautifully

The guitar on 'she came in through the bathroom window'

When they launch into 'boy your gonna carry that weight'

'And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make' - just generally

When George sings a section of main vocal on 'Free as a Bird' - I only realised he actually sings recently (I thought it was Paul throughout) he does right? - and i was like yyeaaahhh :)

Every moment of 'while my guitar gently weeps' is magical. I can say no more

The backing 'bang bang shoot shoot ooohh yeaahh' on 'Happiness is a warm gun- J'ADORE

'He was such a stupid GET!' in 'I'm so tired' haha and 'Give you everything I've got for a little peace of miiiind'

the way Paul says 'Gideon's bible' in 'Rocky Raccoon'

The 'wah wah wah wah' ... 'see see see see' backing vocals on sexy sadie are genius

On 'I'm a loser' it used to really bug me when John's voice goes really low but now I kind of really appreciate it!

'KEEP ON ROCKING THAT PIANO' on John's version of rock n roll music

John's Dylanesque voice on 'You've got to hide your love away'

'the road that stratched out of here' on 'two of us' Paul goes like 'out of haaaaar'

'WOW NO!' on 'I've got a feeling' and the sexiness of Paul's roary voice in general

'Strawberry Fields Forever' he goes 'Foreffe' '

It's been said but Paul's high 'yeah' s in 'It Won't Be Long'

'Keep your hands to yourself' on 'I;m Down' - could anyone possibly make their voice go any cooler than on this line?? I think not and Paul's yelling at the end of the song

The way John sings the words  'Don't Let me Down' really meaningfully and how cool Paul's voice is in the background

The 'Come on' s in 'Please Please Me'

The 'shalalalalalalaa' s in 'Baby It's You'

As has been mentioned- the Lennon+McCartney voices on 'keeping an eye on the world...' in 'I'm Only Sleeping

The in-breaths on 'Girl' or whatever they are- drags? I dunno but I love them

The high 'In myyyyyy life' at the end of 'In My Life'

When Ringo hits the high note at the end of 'WIth a Little Help FRom My Friends' - Makes me want to hug him

Every aspect about 'A Day in the Life'. The first time I heard it I was really freaked out by the whole song- it was bizarre I thought 'wow I'm not going to be able to sleep after hearing that' it struck something really deep in me in a way no other song ever has- it was kind of really scary yet beautiful and magical and special at the same time
'
'deliver the letter, the sooner the better' In 'Please Mr Postman' its just so cool- it's so John the way he sings it and the clapping

Ok I know there are more but i MUST STOP I apologise humbly I got carried away and now this is stupid and long and pointless so I apologise greatly but I had fun and it has reminded me of how amazing music is  :)

I wish I had more to say on George's songs but there are so few of them  :( The ones that there are are amazing all the way thorugh though

Because!!!

The beggining of Strawberry Fields Forver!

The way that You Never give me your money kicks in with
Ringo's drum into at the beggining.

The backing vocals on Sun King, when John sings 'everybodys's laughing...'

The guitar intro with the bass on Drive My Car. Really gets Rubber Soul going!

the backing vocals on I'm Only Sleeeping

I think this is a great topic because often times, its really little details that make a song amazing.

Some of Johns vocal embellishments are great, such as the "ahhhhhh" before the last chorus of Shes Got a Ticket to Ride, and the "oh-o-o-oh" at the end of the last verse of Eight Days a Week.

The ending medley of "Abbey Road"
Oh! Darling
Strawberry Fields Forever
If I Fell

Beatles' covers that are magical:

(This is for Mr. Bobber.)

Beatles songs that are magical to me:

Hey Jude - I love it when the music seems to swell up as they burst into the "Na na na na" chorus.

Let It Be - The line:  "And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me, shine until tomorrow, let it be"--it is so uplifting.

She Loves You - Hard to pick a moment here...  The song's manic energy throughout is just magical.  But I do love the harmony on "Yeaaah" at the very end of the song.

I Saw Her Standing There - Paul's opening:  "One!  Two!  Three!  Four!"  Great start for a terrific song and album!

Penny Lane - Again, hard to pick a moment.  Just listening to this song transports me to a different place (erm, Liverpool?)...that's why it's magical to me.

Something - The lyrics:  "You're asking me will my love grow, I don't know, I don't know, just stick around now it may show, I don't know, I don't know" and the tender guitar solo.

Here Comes the Sun - It's the whole damn song for me that's amazing.  The "tinkling" guitars and the lyrics are amazing...it just makes you feel like one is just waking up from a long period of unhappiness and discovering life all over again.

The ending medley of "Abbey Road" - The whole medley is great, but the closer is incredible:  "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make", plus the soaring vocals and the blend of instruments that come after that.  What a way to end an album (let's ignore "Her Majesty").  It's HEAVEN.

Oh! Darling - Paul's gritty vocals, and his screaming at the very end.

Strawberry Fields Forever - The lyrics get to me...  "No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low" captures the feeling of alienation in a subtle and clever way.

If I Fell - The moment Paul joins John for the harmony.  It's perfection.

Here, There and Everywhere - "Changing my life with a wave of her hand" and "There, running my hands through her hair", and the gorgeous cooing harmonies in the background.

Across the Universe - I have to give John Lennon kudos for his beautiful and surreal lyrics here: "Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes..."  It's breathtaking imagery in words, and I always wait for that line to come while listening to the song.

The Night Before - "Last night is the night I will remember you by, when I think of things we did, it makes me wanna cry"--okay, this is completely stupid, but I like to dream that Paul is singing those lines to me.  However, it's the things I haven't done with Paul that makes me want to cry.   ;D

Julia - I love how John is softly calling his late mother's name in the song:  "Julia, Julia..."  It's very restrained but you can tell there are a lot of hidden emotions as he is trying to reach out to her.

Mother Nature's Son - "Swaying daisies sing a lazy song beneath the sun..." just takes me away from reality.

Real Love - The guitar solo and the "Real love" chorus make me feel emotional.  Plus, you can't call a Threetle "reunion" with John anything but magical.

That Means a Lot (unreleased) - Just listen to the damn harmonies!

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Clapton guitar solos and the fact that the guitar really does sound like it's crying (duh).

In My Life - The opening:  "There are places I remember, all my life though some have changed..."  It just invites the listener into the song since it's something that everyone can relate to and understand.

A Hard Day's Night - The brash opening chord.

What You're Doing - I love Ringo's drums at the beginning and end!

Yesterday - Okay, this is not a moment, but God, Paul's voice is amazing.

Don't Let Me Down - "I'm in love for the first time" must've been quite a smack in the face to Cynthia, but I love the feeling in that line; John's sense of joy and liberation at finding his true love.

Hold Me Tight - "Don't know what it means to hold you tight, being here alone tonight with you, it feels so right now"--I start drooling when I hear that.  It might sound like an innocuous pop track, but this song just screams sex to me.  And sex with Paul can't be bad, right?   ;D

Because - Don't fault me for not choosing an exact moment here, because we all know the entire song is magical.

Blackbird - I appreciate Paul's guitar work throughout the song...it is so intricate and delicate and suits the mood of the song so perfectly.  I guess this isn't a moment, but...shut up.  :)

Helter Skelter - I can't resist Paul's searing, screaming vocals:  "And I see you agaaain..."

I Wanna Be Your Man - Paul's long scream towards the end.

Dear Prudence - I love the guitars and the drumming that come in at the last minute of the song, plus the lovely guitar opening.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - I've always adored how the electric guitar just cuts through the orchestral background noises.

A Day in the Life - All you Beatle fans should know exactly what I'm talking about here.

Beatles' covers that are magical:

Twist and Shout - The "Ahhh..." harmonies in the middle of the song, and the screams that follow.  Love it.

Long Tall Sally - The "We're gonna have some fun tonight" ending with Paul shout-singing.  I am clearly addicted to Paul's screaming.

Okay, that took forever.  I've updated my list from my other post, but I'm still not sure if I have every "magical" song or snippet.  Bobber, I expect you to send me a medal by tomorrow for doing this.   :P :P

What are your favorite little bits/trinkets in the Beatles songs?  For example, the singing of Frere Jacques in Paperback Writer.

One that comes to my mind is as "Hey, Bulldog" is winding down Paul is barking like a dog with John urging him on.  They both seem to be really loose, having a blast when tensions were usually high.  The video footage of this is really great too!

Hey man, that's sort of weird! I was gonna start a thread like this!  Yeah, Hey Bulldog is one of the Beatle's gems! I've sort of re-discovered it in the last few months. Now my kids have to hear it in the car all the time.  I love the bit during the solo, about 1:21 into the song. The guitars and bass mesh and there's this great moment of the four being completely in sync with each other. And yeah that vid is awesome too!.

The swelling of music during "A Day in the Life" (both of them)

The last chorus of "Let it Be".

The first na na's of "Hey Jude"

Pretty much all of "Nowhere Man"...I love John's voice 8)

There are more, but I can't think of them right now.

"John hitting the high note in HIAWG"

Forgive me, it's late and I'm tired, but what song is HIAWG? *blush*

"in summer" from Penny Lane.  Something about the grit in the voice and the way it climbs, to bring you back round to the main melody.

The third chorus of "Lucy," where John comes in on the first line.  And the line "that grow so incredibly highhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."

In "You Can't Do That," "everybody's GREEEEEEEEEEN" -- great harmony.

The plunking acoustic that opens "Yesterday."  I also like how the Martins ran Blackbird into the front of it.  Nicely, nicely.

I could name a dozen instances where Paul does a bass run.  How each of them filled a given space and then got back out of the way for a vocal or another instrument shows a natural ability no one ever will match, to my mind.

GREAT thread.

Post by: stevie on May 19, 2009, 10:27:18 AM
yeah that part of 'Penny Lane' is special and the next bit, 'meanwhile back', the bass part is great.

I also like the part of 'You Never Give Me Your Money', just before the 'one sweet dream' lyric. Ringo's drums sound cool and they are all tuned into each other.

I guess this is pretty trivial **blush**, but in "I'll Get You", John changes his melody from the first part of the verse to the 2nd so that it fits with Paul's really unusual harmony note perfectly.

"Imagine I'm in love with you ..."

" ... 'cause I've imagined I'm in love with you"

He sings a B on the 1st one, but a C# on the second one, which fits oh so much nicer with Paul's E harmony note. It took me a lot of listens to realize this ... at first listen (or 10) it seems like John is singing the B in both parts.

Brilliant!

i suppose this should be in the solo forums, but when paul belts out'...maybe you're the only woman who could ever help me'in "maybe i'm amazed",but then he sings the '....baby won't you help me understand' bit so softly and meaningfully.absolute genius,i must have heard it 10,000 times and i still get goosebumps.

(Hope I'm not breaking some unwritten rule (like Doug Dimsdale) by quoting a post that's not the most recent ....)

Penny Lane, from the screaming Paul in your avatar to the magic moments you've posted, I think you and ah share a LOT about what makes the Beatles special - maybe we are twins separated at birth!

Anyway, some of the most magical moments to me are Paul's screams, or even his 'bout-to-scream-type vocals. In no special order:

1) Clarabella!
2) Oooh My Soul
3) Kansas Stadt
4) Long Tall Sally
5) I'm not the biggest fan of Can't Buy Me Love, but his scream just before the guitar solo is OOOOOOOHHHH SOOOOOOO GOOOOOODDDDD!!!
6) I'm Down
7) Lucille (The whole friggin song is like on GIGANTIC scream, OMG!!)

8) I also love John's screams, it's amazing but when they screamed together it seemed like they did THAT in harmony also, John on the bottom and Paul on the top, like in Hard Day's Night - incredible!
9) John's scream on "Slow Down"
10) I'll have to think of more John's screams, but I think they are not any worse than Paul's (when John was in his prime, like '62 through '64).

Just my 2c!

[Edit: Hey, I wonder why I'm not able to quote Penny Lane's epic awesome thread from the last page ... ??? It's not like I'm trying to nail someone's head to a table, which would be cruel, if not fair ...]

when paul's voice cracks the second time he sings 'was in VAIN' and you can hear him  try not to laugh

a hard days night
when paul passes the song back to john from the middle eight "...feeling you holding me tight, tight YEAH" and john sings "AWWW its been a hard days . . . . "
the way pauls "YEAH" and john's "AWWW" overlap.

Oh I have a lot...

-The blackbird sounds on Blackbird
-The crescendo's and the "ahhhhhhhs" in A Day in the Life
-The opening of Hey Bulldog
-The scream right before the guitar solo in Can't Buy Me Love
-The chorus in I've Got A Feeling where Paul and John are singing their respective parts
-The tripple guitar solo in The End
-Vocal bass in I Will :)
-I don't know why, but the way "at all" is sung in this song makes me smile
-The rockin' vocal part in Oh! Darling
-one, two, three, FAHR!
-Again, not sure why but the first time in Lovely Rita when Paul goes, "Lovely Rita, meet a maid" makes me smile
-The backwards guitar in I'm Only Sleeping, chills
-The end of Hello Goodbye
-The bassline in Lady Madonna
-"I don't know, I don't knoooooooooooow" in Something
-The guitar in Dear Prudence from 3:20 to 3:30
 Oh I could go on...

I have had Rubber Soul on repeat in my car this week and I totally agree about that harmony in Wait - fantastic.

One of my favourite Beatles bits is the guitar solo of Nowhere Man, and especially the sound of the guitar when at the start of each phrase it plays a few notes together rather than just one single note.
Also the instrumental break in the middle of Day Tripper - that whole crescendo thing is fantastic.
John's vocal on Twist and Shout - incredible from start to finish.
The introduction of It's All Too Much.
The intro bit of the Hollywood Bowl LP - "And now, here they are, The Beatles!" and the screams start. In fact, the whole LP is amazing. What I wouldn't give to have been there that night!
I could go on and on and on  ;D

"Across the Universe" is all magical for me but especially:
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe

That's just how my mind feels sometimes.

Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns, it calls me on and on
Across the universe

And that's what keeps me going through tough times.

So I was listening to the Beatles today and I realized there are a bunch of small moments in their songs that are so unique and really just make the Beatles so freakin fabulous. I'll start off, please add your own!!

1. The way George says "things" in I Want to Tell You
2. The absolute DIRTY guitar riffaage in the chorus of Sgt. Pepper's
3. When Paul "notches it up a skosh" on the word "knew" in SCITTBW ( I always end up having to rewind this part at least twice)

I agree. I am in a bit of a rush right now, but a couple of things come to mind:

1. John's raw, moving "Hey!"s on "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away."

2. Paul's countdowns. I have yet to count how many songs these appear on, but that has to be one of the most comforting sounds in the world to me.

Many more, will have to think on this!

I always considered It's All Too Much as a somewhat messy recording. I was listening to a strange solo on the guitar from 2:00 minutes or so. And suddenly, clearing as a blue sky, at 2.30, there's a little brass section. Magical moment indeed.

nice recovery pulling a great thread from the past.

Penny Lane - the trumpet solo, while not the beatles themselves, it actually makes me smile/cry every time.

Eleanor Rigby - don't remember which way but on the mono if  you swing headphones/speakers all the way left or right whenever the heavy strings come in you can exclude the vocals other than bleed in and the POWER of the strings is awesome.

Off the top of my head:

The guitar intro and "Aaahhh..aaahhh" at the beginning of "Lovely Rita"

Paul's little "Poppa-dop-pom" in "I've Just Seen A Face"

The sound of the bus zooming across the speakers in "Magical Mystery Tour"

The little falsetto bit towards the end of "Tell Me Why" (what the hell ARE they singing there?)

The crystal clear little "ping!" at the end of the guitar solo in "Nowhere Man"

John's "BBBrrrr!" (as near as I can spell it!) in "Slow Down"

The ringing guitar intro to "If I Needed Someone"

The spangly guitar outro to "A Hard Day's Night" (Oh how I've often wished they'd based a fresh song around the sound of that wonderful fade out!!)

Paul's "Yeah?" reply to John's shout of "Big man!" in "Hey Bulldog"

That five note guitar lick just before the "Come On"s in "Please Please Me"

The avalanche of "Come on"s including a wonderfully goat-like "aaahhh Come On!" (John or George?) buried in the mix right at the fade out of "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me & My Monkey"

The flute at the end of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away"

The first moment Ringo's drums kick-in on "Strawberry Fields Forever"

Paul's emphasis "Every SINGLE day" in the fade out to the stereo version of "Got To Get You Into My Life" (was he dropping a hint?)

The bubble-blowing/kazoo duet in "Octopus's Garden"

John's thickly scouse "Kind of a Gairl that makes the News of the Wairld" line in "Polythene Pam"

and so many, many more besides......
