When did Harrison start to be interested in Spanish guitar??
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:16:04 PM »

This is the oldest source so far found regarding this subject*:

[/

Any clues regarding older sources??

On Anthology book, when he talks about his beginnings with guitar playing, I don't recall a word about Spanish guitars...

When did he listen to Segovia's music for the first time??

Thanks in advance and best wishes!! ;)

Xosé

* My warmful thanks to Marcelo Ravelo for finding this source for me...

Bare in mind that blurb also says George is older than Paul (whose really into modern jazz), that Ringo used to be an engineer and John didn't "enter show business" until 1960. That thing was probably knocked out by a NEMS press secretary.

Thanks Kevin!! ;)

Yes: those are clear mistakes...

But the facts is George was telling his admiration about Andrés Segovia's guitar playing at several interviews dated November 1963 - November 1964.

IMHO, that piece of paper is rightly quoting George's interest in Spanish guitar playing. The question is: when did George first become acquainted with Segovia??

And I don't think it happened at his family home in Liverpool during his early days...

Best!! ;)

Paul McCartney Talks About Bach's Piece

John Colapinto, "When I'm Sixty Four", New Yorker (4 June 2007), pp. 56-67:

"...Both men [Carlos Bonell and McCartney] picked up guitars and prepared to work on some passages [from McCartney's ongoing guitar concerto] that McCartney  wanted to refine. But first he played the opening bars of a Bach Bourrée. He said that he and George Harrison used to play it together as a 'party piece' in the early sixties. He showed how one of the chords had become the opening notes of 'Blackbird'..."

Chet Atkins LP Hi-Fi in Focus, from 1957. Track listing:

Side one:

   1. "El Cumbanchero" (Rafael Hernández) – 2:01
   2. "Ain't Misbehavin''" (Harry Brooks, Andy Razaf, Fats Waller) – 2:17
   3. "Shadow Waltz" (Al Dubin, Harry Warren) – 2:23
   4. "Anna" (Arthur Alexander) – 2:02
   5. "Yesterdays" (Otto Harbach, Jerome Kern) – 2:18
   6. "Portuguese Washerwoman" (R. Lucchesi, A. Popp) – 2:05

Side two:

   1. "Tiger Rag" (Harry DaCosta, Eddie Edwards, Nick LaRocca) – 1:49
   2. "Walk, Don't Run" (Johnny Smith) – 2:22
   3. "Tara's Theme" (David, Steiner) – 2:24
   4. "Johnson Rag" (Guy Hall, Henry Kleinkauf, Jack Lawrence) – 2:07
   5. "Lullaby of the Leaves" (Bernice Petkere, Joe Young) – 2:37
   6. "Bourrée" (Bach) – 1:28
   7. "Avorada" (Traditional) – 1:30

Does anyone have access to the British Allegro recording label archives?? I mean: I'm looking for the dated where an Allegro LP was launched in the UK. I know it was in 1964, but I'm looking for the month...

Thanks in advance and best wishes!! ;)

Quote from: Xosé
...On 5 November 1967 Segovia is interviewed at a Spanish newspaper. At some point, he says (=excuse my translation): "...I don't need to meet The Beatles. I have nothing in common with those guys. [A few years ago, being I] in London they sent to me a recording of mine to be signed. I signed it, but I have never wanted to meet them..."

Leaving aside Segovia's stupid pride, I think I can draw the context. Segovia gave a concert at Royal Festival Hall on 20 May 1964, precisely on those days when Harrison was very fond with his music -and with his Ramírez-, and when The Beatles were recording A hard day's night album. At those days, this Segovia's recording was launched in London:

...Would be this the recording Harrison sent to Segovia to be signed??...

I have looking at my vinyl, and it has this engraving "...4 / 64..."

April 1964?? Does anyone here have access to Allegro label data base??

Thanks!! ;)

Confirmed: that LP was launched in London on April 1964.

Now, next step would be to find old Allegro catalogues, newspaper news, etc., to find out the exact day...

Any clues??  ???

Best!! ;)

I KNOW that Harrison owned that LP at least since 1963 (=and surely before...) ;D

Anthology book, p. 28:

"...I remember discovering inversions, when you learn all the chords around the bottom of the neck. Suddenly I realized how all the shapes transform up the neck - all the same chords inverted higher and higher. It was great, just working that out. Then when I was a bit older someone gave me a Chet Atkins album and I started to try and figure out tunes with different chords..."

A Chet Atkins album, alright. But why particularly THIS album?

Because somebody was at Harrison's bedroom at 174 Mackets Lane in 1963 and see this album amongst his albums...
