Title: Mersey Beat
Post by: Bill Harry on May 20, 2008, 11:24:41 AM
With some discussions on the forums about what Liverpool was like I thought I could put various memories down in a new thread. In the meantime, in the 'Bill Harry's Mersey Beat' section of www.merseybeat.co.uk I have been discussing each individual issue of Mersey Beat, which might give readers an insight into the times. Here's an example of what I wrote about Issue no. 86:

Thanks as always for taking the time, Bill. I found a couple of Daily Howl photos for anyone who's curious about what it actually looked like:

I managed to track down a copy of the Daily Howl for John. This is probably part of it. When John wanted to find material for his first book, he asked if I could trace a copy of the Daily Howl for him. I remembered that Rod Murray had been left behind in the Gambier Terrace flat which John and Stu had left and never returned to. Rod had been thrown out by the landlady and I managed to track him down. He told me that he still had some of John's possessions, but as John still hadn't paid his part of the rent, which Rod had to cough up for, he wanted some renumeration, so I got hold of Brian Epstein and told him to settle with Rod and get the book back. Many years later Rod also sold a copy of the Daily Howl at auction. I don't really know whether Brian had followed up and obtained it from Rod, whether Rod still retained the original, or whether he'd had two copies.
Millie Sutcliffe went to Gambier Terrace to collect Stuart's belongings and paid Stu's part of the rent. Among the items she brought back to her house was a chest of drawers with some of John's possessions. When her husband came home from sea and asked who they belonged to he threw them out when she said they were John's.
When I took John to see her, she gave him back a book on how to draw horses which he'd lent Stu years before.

Those photos are from the "John Lennon Museum's" site (http://www.taisei.co.jp/museum/index_e.html), which is another Yoko-approved project, so the book is probably in her possession now. The particular page they were originally posted on is this one:

I know that Rod sold his Daily Howl copy at a Southeby's auction in London in the 1980s and got just under seventeen thousand pounds  for it. Perhaps it has since ended up in Yoko's possession. There is another book by John which he gave to Helen Anderson while we were at art college. She put it up for auction but it didn't reach the one hundred thousand reserve price. I don't know whether she still has it.

That should probably cover the overdue rent then :)

Spencer Leigh phoned me up this morning to say that my old friend Pat Delaney had died on Saturday. His wife had passed away from cancer some years ago and his four daughters and two sons had left the nest. So he was alone and slightly accident prone. But on Saturday he fell on top of a lighted stove and received terrible burns and died in hospital.

Pat, as you know, was the original Cavern doorman and a good friend of the Beatles and other Mersey groups. Many years ago he was trying to write a book about his experiences called 'the Best of Cellars.' He lent me the manuscript but it was unpublishable. He needed someone to ghost it for him. Sadly, we'll never be able to read about the memories he had.

Yes, Paddy was good fun and we had enjoyable times in his company. He used to help deliver copies of Mersey Beat and we also let him do our theatre reviews. His wife was a lovely woman and at one time was considered as Lord Mayoress of Liverpool. He loved Al Jolson and Virginia and I arranged for him to sing Al Jolson numbers on stage at the Trocadero in front of an audience of 2,000. He was physically sick before he went on stage, but he went and did it.

Many thanks for the condolences Bobber, I hope others will express them too

Virginia and I have just returned from Liverpool. We launched my new book 'Liverpool - Bigger Than The Beatles' in the Cavern section of the Beatles Story and there were many guests including Joey and Eddie Ankrah of the Chants, Steve Aldo, Billy Kinsley, Roag Best, Charlie Lansborough, Mike Byrne and many others. Wally Shepard and Dave Ferguson presented Virginia and I with a special award from the Merseycast. Some pics of the night are featured on
http://liverpooldays.com/photo/thumbnails.php?album=58 (http://liverpooldays.com/photo/thumbnails.php?album=58) On the Thursday 100,000 copies of my new issue of Mersey Beat appeared with the Liverpool Echo and this Monday there was a second issue. On Sunday we saw various Merseycats groups at the Hard Days Night Hotel and also met up with Astrid, Klaus and Ulf. On Monday we were at the unveiling of Klaus' new painting in which he has included Virginia and me, Mona Best, Bob wooler, Ray McFall and Alistair Taylor.

I believe that all my books, with the exception of the new one, are out of print. Generally they don't get major distributuon and most Beatles sites, when listing books, probably haven't even heard of them. I've possibly written more Beatles books than anyone else and at 1,200 pages and half a million words, my 'Beatles Encyclopedia' is one of the most detailed of the Beatles booksd. Hi Bill.
One of my favourite Beatles books is Mersey Beat - The Beginnings of The Beatles.
It's totally fascinating reading about what the band were up to in 62/63, just as they were about to take off nationally in the UK.
And reading about all the other Liverpool acts is great too, plus seeing the adverts for forthcoming concerts and who is playing with who.
It must have been a very exciting time.

I have just been looking through my files and during the past 20 years I have approached numerous publishers regarding a new issue of Mersey Beat with lots of colour covers, Beatles adverts, all the articles by John, Paul, George and Ringo, plus fantastic pics and articles - but no British publisher is interested.

I recently re-launched two new issues of Mersey Beat. You can get the entire 'Beatles Week' issue

Let me know what you think as I am considering publishing further issues with the Liverpool Echo. It would be interesting to see how many fans on this forum actually respond and see the copy of Mersey Beat

Unfortunately, although www.merseybeat.co.uk (http://www.merseybeat.co.uk) is still on the net, I've had to ask them to freeze all sales of Mersey Beat product because I had to end the licence with the people who I originally dealt with because they never paid me for any of the Mersey Beat products they sold. For the past few years I've wanted Liverpool to have a permanent memorial to John. I worked out a detailed proposal for a John Lennon Week in Liverpool next October - and it has turned out to be a potential three-month John Lennon celebration. We'll want John's fans from all over the world to come to Liverpool for some special events. I had a meeting about it this morning.
Also, this afternoon I was at a meeting for London Sixties Week. We are going to have some fab events set for London next July and they will herald an annual events.

The initial meetings went well and I'll be attending the first major meeting in Liverpool the first week in January. It was decided that there should be events and extra special exclusive items regarding John which would be of value for his fans. I'll keep you informed of all events. When I spoke at a tribute service to John at St Nicholas' church in Liverpool a few years ago, I said I was determined to see that Liverpool had a permanent memorial to John, now it looks as if it will happen - this time sited at the Pier Head.

While there I had a number of important meetings to discuss making Liverpool the centre of John Lennon celebrations this year, so there will be a three month series of evernts to pay tribute to the 70th anniversary of his birth and 30th anniversary of his death. Bill,
Any chance of seeing the Stuart Sutcliffe Lecture Series. I understand that this is a multi-media presentation series chronicling the art of Stuart Sutcliffe (authored/presented by Pauline Sutcliffe/Diane Vitale)

Has it ever been shown anywhere in the UK before?

how about a screening of the rarely screened film "Midnight Angel" (1990) Granada TV

or a talk by your good self, on your friendship & recollections of Stuart.

Just some ideas..

Parist, I haven't heard of the Stuart Sutcliffe multi-media presentation, although I'll try and get details. It's certainly the time for something to be done, this being the 70th anniversary of his birth. Stuart Sutcliffe: A Retrospective was a special exhibition in Liverpool in 2008 and Rod Murray and I contributed to the exhibition book.
I will see what I can do. I am currently in touch with various former art students and will see what other memories they may be able to contribute. I'll certainly try and get something done this year in memory of my dear friend Stuart.

The lecture series will take place in November at the rate of one a week. The film season is likely to take place at the Odeon in Liverpool One. I've talked to Roag Best and something will take place at the Casbah. I also invited Tony Bramwell to give a lecture and he's accepted. I've also discussed it with Stan Parkes, John's cousin. There is an upcoming Astrid Kirchherr exhibition taking place in Liverpool in a few months, which will still be on during the season.

Astrid's coming to Liverpool in four months:

"...an exclusive evening with Astrid in the Victoria Gallery & Museum where she will hold a talk and introduce her exhibition which will contain about 100 photographs ranging from the Beatles in Hamburg in 1960, Astrid’s home and family as well as images of Liverpool, there will then follow a drinks reception."

Thanks for the heads up, Bill.

Had a long chat with Roag. Pete only does a single gig per year and is already set for 28 August. As a result Roag has suggested that the Casbah recreates the Quarrymen debut at the club on 17 December. They will find a group who can perform and re-create that appearance, together with a support band. The support band that night was Gene Day & the Django Beats. Gene Day later changed his name to Earl Preston and I have asked him to come along that night and chat to the audience about the original historic event.

Receiving good tributes from John's friends and associates for the John Lennon Liverpool Season. Will probably include them in a special John Lennon issue of Mersey Beat in October. Also working on a book to be published in september - John Lennon's Liverpool

I wrote several tweets this morning, the first time for about three weeks. Still working hard on both the John Lennon Liverpool Season and London Sixties week, in addition to two books on John Lennon and planning a john Lennon issue of Mersey Beat for October.
