Just found this!
Deal for Beatles on iTunes in works
The worldwide Beatles grapevine is buzzing over the distinct possibility that the long-awaited remastering of the Fab Four's United Kingdom CD back catalogue will finally see the light of day -- by June.
As per usual, Apple/EMI is presently mum, but sources with knowledge of the project say that two scenarios are possible for the release of the minimum 11 UK albums.
What's more, the long, heated court feud between the Beatles' Apple Corp. and Apple Computers over naming rights might finally have been resolved. The belief is that Beatles songs at long last will be available for downloading from Apple Computers' iTunes, as soon as next month.
As for the remasters, when CD versions of the Beatles' UK albums were first released some 20 years ago, they came out chronologically over a year, from their first LP, Please Please Me, to their final offering, Let It Be.
Sources say if a chronological release occurs this time, the timeframe would be much quicker, from March to June of this year.
The second strong possibility is that the entire state-of-the art, 24-bit remastered UK catalogue will hit stores the first week of June, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of what many call the Fabs' finest hour -- the release of their ground-breaking Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
SPECIAL DEAL FOR PEPPER
Although there is a chance that Sgt. P will be given a special treatment -- in a box set, with both stereo and rare mono mixes -- little is being said about any extras for the other catalogue albums, other than that a compilation CD might be made available.
Even though EMI had a strong outing with the LOVE soundtrack in 5.1 Surround Sound last year, there's no word on whether any of the new UK remasters will have any multichannel content, which is highly coveted by die-hard fans and audiophiles.
As for the Apple vs. Apple battle, the buzz is that two companies apparently will finally collaborate on Beatles music -- for an exclusive three-month, restricted deal allowing Apple Computers' popular iTunes to offer downloaded, remastered Beatles songs, perhaps even before the CDs are made available.
Apple Computers plans a "special" announcement scheduled for a Super Bowl commercial on Feb. 4, which may give more indication as to where the new remastered CDs will debut first.
"I'm amazed at the possible Apple/Apple alliance," said Steve Marinucci, who runs the award-winning Abbey Rd website. "The Beatles can still surprise us after all these years."
-
I expect Apple to do the 'wrong' thing and release the mp3's first. I only hope that the downloads and the cd's have received separate treatment, and we're not going to get cd's full of horrible compressed sound.
As for the content, I'm quite happy with mono/stereo where applicable. As long as the remastering is good. The only albums I can see working in surround are Sgt. Pepper, and Abbey Road. As it sounds like there's a rumour about Sgt. Pepper in 5.1, maybe it'll be released as a separate package?
As for having both mono and stereo mixes, most albums could fit that on to a single disc, but the White Album would end up as a 4 disc set and I can't see Apple doing that.
And finally, we're going to discover what they do with Let It Be next!!! Having mistakenly (in my opinion) issued Let It Be...Naked, what happens now? Can they justify going back and reissuing the exact same album that they had presumably replaced? 'Naked' should have had bits of dialogue between songs, like a proper soundtrack, instead of that silly Fly On The Wall cd. I'll be waiting for them to release yet another version when the movie finally comes out!!

Beatles to Celebrate Sgt. Peppers Anniversary
June 1 2007 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Beatles
-
the new versions are expected to feature each track re-mastered in a state-of-the art 24-bit sound as well as it’s original mono recording.
Squeeee! This is what I've been waiting for. See, it pays not to buy any Beatles records until... 40 years after they were published... :B

the release of the minimum 11 UK albums.
Does that mean no MMT and Yellow Sub?
-
Does that mean no MMT and Yellow Sub?
Yellow Submarine was done a few years back, and Magical Mystery Tour was never an album in the UK until they released the American version in the 70's.
My guess is that they're also going to release some kind of Past Masters type thing with all the rest on it. Maybe some kind of special double mini CD ep type thingy for MMT. But not until Xmas.

Even without MMT there were thirteen original UK albums. The Yellow Sub Songtrack was not the original Yellow Sub and why are we forgetting Oldies...But Goldies?
As for the rest I think you're being optimistic.
Maybe in a few years we'll get a special MMT with record and DVD, but even there I'm not betting on it.

Does anyone really want the GM instumentals from the original?
'Oldies' was never issued on CD in the first place. We'll have (eventually, at least) everything that's on it anyway.

I hope so. My old mono vinyl Sgt. Peppers is kinda scratchy.

We're not talking about CDs.We're talking about what the article says : the original UK albums.
What they're saying is historically not true.
And there's nothing to say that you'll eventually get all the b sides etc that are on Past Masters.
It's weird to think that if MMT is not issued then you can have these eleven albums, ONE, the songtrack, and you STILL won't have Fool On The Hill or Strawberry Fields!
-
Well, this news is still not official, so details are given to us by journalists who may not exactly be experts in the field. We'll have to wait and see exactly what (if anything!) we get.
-
Good old EMI out to bleed the BEATLE fans yet again >:(

Remastered albums would be nice, bit not absolutely essential. For me, anyway. Yes, the Love album sounds nice, but so do the other albums in their present state. And that's the way the Beatles heard them in the studio at the time. The Beatles collection can be digitally altered ad infinitum.
I'm happy I've maintained my old vinyl collection in nice condition (the mono Sgt. Pepper's is my sister's and that's why it's a mess. I think she used it as a coaster). There's a special warmth in listening to their works on vinyl which you really don't hear in the digital versions.
-
(the mono Sgt. Pepper's is my sister's and that's why it's a mess. I think she used it as a coaster).
I loaned a vinyl album to my older sister, and I came in and found it naked on the floor jammed under one of the legs of her bed. How in the world do you accidentally drop a bed on an album?!?! Boggles the mind...
-
Boggles the mind...
It does, doesn't it?!
The monaural Sgt. Pepper's is quite different than the stereo version. The mono mixes are richer and even some "clues" were found in them, like Paul yelling about something at the end of the reprise*.
Well, fortunately I have "The Alternate Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" CD and so the mono mixes are restored to my collection.
*But as we all know.......

You're lucky that you have the vinyl. The cd's sounds mostly awful.
BTW, I wouldn't say that we'll ever hear it the way it was heard at the time in the studio.
-
I like to think that George Martin played the final mix for the Beatles in the studio which is at least close to what we hear on CDs or vinyl today. The remastered Love album is definitely not what the Beatles heard then.
-
I suspect this has been discussed already, but anyway, I'm new here.
Are they really going to remaster and reissue Beatles-catalogue this year? I'm wondering this because I don't own all the albums yet, dying to anyway. But I wouldn't want to "waste" my money to the older CD's if they are going to release newer ones... I'm not actually buying records now, I'm saving money, but still... The Beatles IS my favouriteband and I'm especially keen on owning A Hard Days Night and Help!
All you wiser ones out there...help, please? She asked meekly and smiled. :)
-
Go on Ebay and buy some mono vinyl (ok condition is suprisingly cheap - I got three for a tenner) then back them up with the remasters when they come out. Then you hear them how they wanted to sound and how they could have sounded.
-
I actually just read the other day that the remasters are done and they are planning on releasing them shortly. Give me an hour or so and i'll try to find a link or more information on the subject.

Beatles Won't Just Be On iTunes When Released Online
Aaron McKenna
February 13, 2007 06:52
Fox News (of all...) has spoken to Neil Aspinall, the man charged with caring for The Beatles legacy (and mountain of money making potential), about when and how we'll be seeing the legendary bands music come to the world of digital distribution.
After Apple Corps settled with Apple Computer over copyright skullduggery it has been widely assumed that iTunes will be seeing The Beatles collection sold on its store. That's true, but Aspinall - who has been quite crafty in how he has maintained the bands legacy, it must be said - also wants the back catalogue of potentially huge sellers to see the light of day on other online music services as well.
According to Fox the 13 core albums released to CD in 1987 have all been remastered for online distribution, and we're expecting their simultaneous release any day now. Interestingly with the change in rules about how the Top Singles Chart is compiled in the UK, allowing for songs of any age to be counted, some are hypothesising that we could see The Beatles dominate the Top 10 with multiple songs when they are released online.
One thing we won't be seeing getting a new release will be the 1970 film "Let it Be", which was concerned with the recording of the song of the same name; and, in the end, wound up showing much of the internal division and strife which eventually led to the breakup of The Beatles.
Some history is just too hard to bear, apparently...
Its probably old news anyways, but thats all I could find.

Yeah, Bobber touched upon it in this thread.

Thanks for the info TK :)
I'm looking forward to seeing the charts once their back-catalogue is available for download!!!

Me too!

I'm hoping Strawberry Fields will finally achieve that number one slot!!!!!
-
This sucks, I already spent 4 years of my life and most of my money buying the regular albums, now I have to buy them all over again???
-
It took you 4 years to buy all of their albums?
-
It took you 4 years to buy all of their albums?
Well, not everyone is made of money, are they.
-
^Yeah!!!
I can still remember the first album I bought. The Blue Album. I saved my allowance for months to buy that.
-

And you appreciated it more because of it.
-
Thanks, everybody! :)
And, I've been buying all the albums for over eleven years now...mainly because there is so much music in the world and I used to have trouble finding Beatles-albums before internet.
And now I guess I'll wait if they will release those new ones soon... :)
I just saved money and spent my Christmasmoney on the Anthology-DVD set. Have not watched it yet, waiting for my winterbreak.
And one year I used my Christmasmoney from my Gran to buy Abbey Road, such a wonderful album! It's so great to think that Gran bought it for me, sort of. 8)
-
I'm a little confused. I'm not very familiar with iTunes and stuff, so could you please just tell me - are all the albums going to be released on CDs as well as online? If so, it would be fantastic - what a present for my coming birthday I'll give myself ;D
-
I haven't read anything about remastered songs appearing on cd. In the news it's said that these remasters are going to be used for legal downloads. So, knowing the Apple strategy, I guess they will at first make them ONLY available for d/loads. After a couple of years, after they have sold enough, they will probably release them on cd or dvd, so we will buy the whole damn thing again and again and again.
-
Oh... :-/
Thank you for the answer, Bobber! :)
I was just hoping... I don't really care about downloads, I've got all their albums in my PC, and I don't have an iPod. I like the feeling when I actually hold in my hands and see the album. I dreamed about a box set or something with all their UK albums, for example. I couldn't find any so far. But it would be just great if they release the remastered albums in such a set... at least I'll be happy :)
-
Oh, yes, only downloads? :(
Blaah...now I have to decide whether only to play it safe and not buy albums for a while, or be wild and buy the missing links.... haaaard. :-/
-
I'm not gonna buy it. They will be available on illegal sites anyway I guess. I have bought enough...
-
I'm not going to buy it either. Plus, I'm not proud to say, but in my country it's easy to find this illegal if it has leaked in torrent sites and such.
But I would spend a fortune if I find somewhere all their discography on CDs. Has something like this been released? A box set, an album collection, anything?
-
Album box from 1978:

-
i have that boxed set...it includes rarities....i got it for 3 bills....back in 85 i think...mfp recordings sound better tho...
-
So are these remasters going to be released only online or are we going to see some sort of beautiful shiny packaging haha. I've held off on buying a digital collection for a while (my vinyl copies have served me well) but if they release all these albums in a box set or with special featurettes and footage and booklets they'd have me sold... again
-
As far as I can see, these remastered songs will ONLY be available online. I haven't read anything about releasing it on cd or dvd.

If they release it as a box set - well worth getting. Better raid your bank account though. OK, guess the price? Say, 130 GBP?
-

Maybe they'll re-invent Beatlemania via the net first, then later release the albums after interest's been whipped up.
-
And still, we'll have to wait and see how it goes. For example: will the songs become available individually? If you want to d/load a random Radiohead song, you have to d/load the whole album and buy it of course, to get the song you want. Apple might do such a thing with the Beatles catalogue.
-
Ok, here we go - waiting. When they are released, I hope a good person is going to write in this thread. And I promise to write if I see them somewhere illegaly :B Just for information purposes, of course ::)

Apple Corps spokeswoman Elizabeth Freund confirms that discussions are under way to make Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abbey Road and the rest of the Fabs' recordings available for download.
When will Apple Corps finally pull the trigger?
"We don't have a release date,'' she says.
-
They won't give out a date until a couple of weeks before it happens. Apple rarely do. And I'm betting that the CD's will follow a couple of months later, once they've had a few tracks in the charts and gained maximum (free) publicity from it. There'd really be no reason not to release them.
-

You can say that on behalf of a lot of Beatles stuff...
-
You can say that on behalf of a lot of Beatles stuff...
Once they've re-issued them as downloads, what would be the point of delaying it? Give it a few months so that Apple get their pound of flesh, and as I said, a lot of Free publicity in the charts. Some people who buy a few downloads may want to get the 'real thing'.
-
For people in their teens and twenties, a mp3 IS the real thing.

And if they sweeten the pot with some interviews, footage, a breakdown of tracks (like the Pet Sounds 40th anniversary release) They could sell even more... get MP3 sales and not everyone will buy all the songs at once... and then release all the albums 3 or 4 months down the road in a REALLY nice box set well then they've sold the same thing twice...
-

erm..... I'm in my twenties and I do want CD's instead of downloads. I do have a mp3 and I love it, but still...download is a download, not a CD...(I actually don't even download anything...)
Argh! Why can't they just tell us something, give us some hope that we will get something! Like a boxset!
-
No the remasters will definately be released as CD's. Aspinal mentioned this about a year ago (I dont have the source to hand but I'll look) because I distinctly remember him saying that the CDS will be released once a deal on online sale has been established and he also mentioned that albums will possibly have bonus tracks and certainly have improved packaging.
The thing with itunes is that the downloads are only available at 128kps. For me this is not good enough sound quality.
I also have hunch that when these are available for download, Apple will launch a special Beatles edition Ipod.(no news on this Im just guessing)
I'll try and find the article
-
A good way of remastering all the fabs catalouge i think is
presenting all albums in both stereo & mono mixes and another disc of
alt takes, demos etc of a particular album.
like the way the capitol albums were re-issued.
May cost a fortune though but i always thought that would be cool!!
for example:
disc 1: please please me (mono & stereo mixes)
disc 2: alternative Please Please Me (takes, demos etc)
(with a nice little booklet about the album)
-
I hate mp3s! it is a ripoff to pay for just a file! i would like some album iartwork!!!
-
for example:
disc 1: please please me (mono & stereo mixes)
disc 2: alternative Please Please Me (takes, demos etc)
(with a nice little booklet about the album)
Whilst most of their albums would fit that way, you'd have a serious problem with the White Album. Would the majority of the public be prepared to pay for 4 cd's? And that's without outakes.
-

I think they have to do a fine balancing act between cost and content. While your package would please folk like us who would be prepared to part with the spondoolies, it might alienate a big chunk of first time buyers, who don't want to hear outtakes.
I bought Love's Forever Changes, and the cd is ruined by the inclusion of loads of alternatives, so it's impossible for a first time listener like myself to get a feel for what the album was really like. And it was an impulse buy, and I certainly wouldn't have paid over the odds for an extra alternate cd.
And while I'm gripping, cd booklets are fine if your under 25 with 20/20 vision. Old f*ckers like me go nearly blind trying to read them. I HATE CD'S. AND HANDSFREE MOBILES (you can't spot the nutters at bus stops anymore).
I curse Gerard Philips, he was such a stupid git.
-
Just found out that Gerard Philips - founder of Philips Electronics - pioneers of the cd - was Karl Marx's cousin. Coincidence? Beware. The roots run deep.

They could produce two versions. Been done before. I'd love to see boxed sets like the Living In The Material World one.
I bought Forever Changes also. Don't know much about Love, and it's one of those 'classic' albums that you think you have to have. Pretty good too, but yep, trashed by the extras. I hate extra stuff, either put it on another cd or leave it off. If it wasn't good enough in the first place then it's not now!
-

Extras should always be reserved for special compilations, and that way you can determine what you want in your buys. CSN did a fantastic 4-CD set. Loads of interesting alternative stuff. If they get the track selections right, it can be really cool. But, putting extras on CSN CDs like they recently have, is bloody annoying cos I have to buy them again to get the extra stuff and I can't afford it right now. Those extra tracks should be on another CSN compilation of rare stuff. Probably other bits and bobs in the vaults too.

Love the trumpets on Alone again Or.
the line from Live and Let live: "Oh the snot has caked against my pants" really bugs me.

Going back here a little but I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just thought that 4 years is quite a long time to buy their CD's. I try and buy at least a new CD a month so I suppose I just wasn't thinking. I am one to talk, though. I have been into them for 2 years now and I still only have Abbey Road, White Album, Sgt. Pepper and Love!
Anyways, I don't see the point in remastering. What makes them so great is how they sound. Were they remastered when they first went to CD?
-
Were they remastered when they first went to CD?
Yes, but not very well, even considering the technology at the time.
The cuurent CD's sound awful, so I'm all for it.
-
Maybe we should have a Beatles outtakes etc Boxset but i suppose
we've already got the Anthology set for that. I've got a lot of bootlegs so
it really dosen't bother me anyway. I do think that the extra demos
on the George Harrison re-issues were a bit lame, maybe a George Harrison
Anthology (like Lennon's) would have been good for that.
I am a obsessive for group's outtakes, demos etc but i can see it
from other people's point of view.

It's all gone worryingly quite.

Harrison widow sees Beatles online deal in '08
Beatles fans will probably have to wait until next year before they can buy the Fab Four's tunes from online retailers such as Apple's iTunes store, George Harrison's widow said on Friday.
A recent settlement to a lengthy trademark dispute between Apple and the Beatles' company, Apple Corps, has cleared the way for the band to distribute its catalogue in cyberspace.
But Olivia Harrison told Reuters, "We just have a few things to work out elsewhere."
Specifically, all the Beatles CDs have been remastered -- good news for fans who have long complained about the poor sound quality -- and the organization wants to get the artwork ready for the physical packages.
Asked if the catalogue would be available online by the end of next year, she said, "Oh God, yeah. Hope so ... I don't know if it would be the end of this year, but it would be nice. Imminent, let's put it that way."
Paul McCartney, who has adopted an aggressive digital marketing strategy for the release next week of his solo album, "Memory Almost Full," told trade publication Billboard last month that an online deal for the Beatles catalogue was "virtually settled." But he, too, shied away from saying that anything would happen in the short term.
The Beatles are the highest-profile omission from digital retailers. While the dispute with Apple did not help, the band's organization has traditionally adopted a conservative approach to new technology, including CDs.
"I think we're a little bit behind," Harrison said, noting that it was "ridiculous" that properly remastered CDs of the band's catalogue were not yet available.
"We (the band's members and widows) all agree. It's been done. It's just trying to now get it out there."
She said that Neil Aspinall, the recently retired businessman who oversaw the group's complex business affairs, had been busy in recent years on the remastering project.
"That's a big job. That means you have to go back through all the archives and find great photographs and really give a nice package to the fans."
Aspinall retired in April and was replaced by Jeff Jones, an American music industry executive who specializes in deluxe reissues of classic albums. Harrison said Aspinall's departure was voluntary, dispelling fan speculation to the contrary.
But she said Jones would "pick up the pace" now that the most recent project, a Beatle-inspired Cirque du Soleil stage show in Las Vegas, was underway after years of preparation initiated by her husband before he died in 2001.

physical packages.
What does this mean? The records could be bought on real CDs as well? I continue being confused about all this... sorry for my insistent asking for information :B

It means that as usual, Apple are lagging behind. They're now putting back the date for re-issues (both on CD, and mp3) until the end of this year at the earliest. It had better be a damn good package!!
-
Well, at least there will be CDs (unless Apple changes its mind)...
-
It's all gone worryingly quite.
No, I just think that Apple Corps are giving time for the new McCartney MAF album & CD reissue of the Travelling Wilburys Collection to do their business before moving on to the Beatles remasters & digital downloads later in the year.

Re-issues we need:
Yesterday & Today
A Hard Days Night (US version)
Revolver (US version)
Collection of Beatles Oldies
Hollywood Bowl
maybe i'm asking too much but they would fit nicely along with the Capitol re-issues.
:)

Well, 3 of those would be on a Capitol Vol 3 wouldn't they? As that hasn't happened yet, I guess it's not going to. You'd rather have this lot before the UK catalogue is released?
-
I have all these albums:
-Please Please Me
-With The Beatles
-A Hard Day's Night
-Beatles For Sale
-Help!
-Rubber Soul
-Revolver
-Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
-Magical Mystery Tour
-The Beatles
-Yellow Submarine
-Abbey Road
-Let It Be
-The Beatles' Christmas Album
-Past Masters, Volume One
-Past Masters, Volume Two
-Live At The BBC
-Anthology 1
-Anthology 2
-Anthology 3
-Let It Be... Naked

And guess how much I paid? $0. See I'm only 15, and not at all made of money, so I hunted for downloads, dug deep into the Internet, borrowed some CDs from friends, and ended up with a complete collection. No boxes, but who cares? The media player I use has a zoomable album art window, and my MP3 player displays album art too! I hope the other poster was correct about the remastered files appearing in torrents.

Here, where I live, people mainly download music from Internet. Music is too expensive for us to buy, even with lower CD prices made for poorer countries like mine. I have the complete Beatles discography, Anthology series etc. downloaded. I deleted most of it because this is the only band whose albums I want to have in real CD format, boxes etc. See, I have original CDs and DVDs of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, for example. But the only band I'm a real fan to are the Beatles, so how could I not have their original albums...
The only problem is I am not well up in all the CD release stuff, in other words I don
-
Nousha, I wish I could advise you. I'm sure someone on this board knows all about the best UK albums to buy. I just bought whatever was available at the time that I wanted it. I don't really know what I have that is remastered, but it's probably all stereo instead of mono. Er, it sounds fine to me! Good luck in your quest. :)
-
Mono was the thing in the sixties, so if you want to listen to the records as The Beatles intended them to be, you gotta have the mono-versions. Stereo was used more from the late 60's I think. We are all waiting for the complete catalogue to be remastered. Not sure when that will appear. It might be worth waiting for. In the meantime, I should go for the mono's.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure you will), but I thought that only the first 4 CD's from the UK catalogue are released in mono? And once again I stand corrected, but wasn't Abbey Road only ever issued in stereo?
-
Mono seems better in Beatles albums to me as its altogether!
I litsened to the mono mix of Pepper a few days back & realised how much
i love the punctuation in the songs with being in mono, it makes the stereo
version sound a bit naked with sounds all over the place.
I hate that about the early Beatle albums. voices on one speaker &
instruments on the other. they were designed to be mono when they first came
out!
-

I'm pretty sure there's a monoversion of Sgt Pepper. Let's call Mr Mono to help us out here. Alan?!
-
Thanks to all of you. So I did a good job when I found all their UK albums in mono. I'm happy :) It makes the situation a little bit clearer - so I won't try to find the albums in stereo and I'll wait for the remasters. Thank for helping me to sort the things out :K)

You must be talking about vinyl, right? Only the first 4 albums on CD were in mono (though there maybe a mono Pepper - the jury's out!). And Let It Be, and Abbey Road have never been released in Mono.
-
I mean I found all their UK albums, released in mono, in mono :)

You know what could be really awesome?
Re-releasing the Beatles albums as actual ALBUMS! But!! When you open up the beautiful duplication of, say "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," you have a regular sized CD inside!
As a kid in the 70's, the biggest thrill next to listening to the music was staring at the album cover, both front and back, and inside. That magic could return, and the Beatles could ONCE AGAIN start an original trend.
Yeah, the albums would be oversized, but let's face it: the Beatles really are in a class by themselves. They deserve their own space, away from the common CD cases.

That's a fantastic idea! I love it! I want my own huge Sgt. Pepper's! (I wanna see all those faces clearly!)

There's rumours it will be released on 09/09/09 in stereo...

I just received this message by e-mail:
THE BEATLES

THE BEATLES

Excellent news. I wonder what the box sets will cost. About the same or a little less than the individual discs? Maybe a bit more for the mono box, given that you can't get the mixes (legally) anywhere else? Who knows. Best start saving, though.
I wonder if there's any mileage in reissues of the EP and single collection boxes that were released back in the day. They could do some nice legacy and remastering with those, as well as including different mixes from around the world.
I'm really pleased about this. It's about time Apple pulled their fingers out. Shame there's no unreleased material, but hey...
-
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! So excited!!!!
(jumping)(jumping)(jumping)
Hooray!!!!!!
-
I'm really into collecting vinyl these days, but I'd guessing that would be too much to ask.
I'd like to hear the new mixes on vinyl re-issues as well...
-
Great great news!!!
Ahhh, sooo happy to hear this. Finally!
(rolling3)

how much will the full whack box set cost in these credit crunch-y times? 200 quid 300 quid ? 14 CDs and a DVD.. hm.

How about this news, right? I haven't been here in a while but I knew you guys would be as excited as I am!
This is going to be an expensive September for me-- I already knew I had to buy the Rock Band game, and an X-box to play it on. And now I have to buy at least one, and possibly two, box sets... But you know I'll be right there. :)

Just got the word today in an email from beatles.com. Awesome news. I just wonder what the "spirit" of Neil Aspinall is thinking about all of this.
Anyway....................I will be taking a "borrow" from one of my cd's at the bank to pay for this.

Here's an example remastered CD from Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beatles/dp/B0025KVLRY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1239179298&sr=1-8
It's 11.69 GBP (about $17.22 USD), so I guess you can start doing the math from there.

Double CD sets (Past Masters and the White Album) cost GBP 17.59 on Amazon pre-order. The stereo box set, or complete collection as separates, should be about GBP 175.
Amazon (US) also has a couple of import singles listed, due for release in January 2010. They're expensive and there's no further info, but certainly food for thought.

Board mods - any chance of a UK pound sign being allowed? At the moment it comes up as £ when typed, which is a pain.
-
I believe it is a feature to stop spammers. I normally get around this by writing quid but I shall see where the big boss Dmitry stands with it. :)
-
Great - thanks for that.
HMV is listing the pre-orders at 8.99, which is pretty good value (the non-remastered discs cost more than that at the moment, though the prices will go through the floor in time). Again, no box sets listed yet. http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?pPageID=4326

something to do with the 9's again, john's lucky number, so thats also john's spirit looking down on us. ;)

While this is great news to replace the existing poor cd versions, I wonder what the worth is in just remastering the existing stereo mixes. Particularly anything pre-68 the stereo versions were just thrown today compared to the attention given to the mono mixes. Why not spend time creating stereo mixes that preserve the feel and intention of the original mono mixes? e.g. the existing stereo version of Sgt. Pepper is universally accepted as being poor compared to the mono version, so while the remastered version may sound better from a sonic point of view, as a mix it's still going to be inferior to the mono version which reflected the intension of the band and George Martin.
Here There And Everywhere is an example - the existing stereo version has the great harmonies all crammed together coming out of one channel. The version released as part of the Anthology project on the Real Love cd single has these harmonies in glorious stereo - to go with McCartney's guide vocal!! Wouldn't it be better to have something like this on a remixed stereo Revolver, but which preserves the original feel of the record?
Just a thought. But the mono box set sounds great!!
-
maybe they remixed it as well?
-
maybe they remixed it as well?
I'm hoping they have ! but the press release doesn't make it sound like they have.
-

I've been thinking about that as well. Remastering doesn't necessarily mean remixing.
Hello folks, been a long time! Just had to come back in light of this news. Looking forward to putting my ears to the test in Sept. A lot of questions on this though. Did Paul and Ringo have any participation on this? I can understand George Martin bowing out being retired and his hearing going down. What about Geoff Emerick? Anything to do with him?
I guess the liner notes may tell us.
-
All in stereo! My favourite Please Please Me! I won`t resist it...

I haven't heard of any role for Geoff Emerick in this process.

Let's say that when the albums come out, each will be available as mono and stereo. Of all the discs being remastered, which ones would be better as mono and which would be better as stereo?
-
I'd say it depends on how they have made the early album stereo...
-
I'd say it depends on how they have made the early album stereo...
Is it true that Sgt Pepper's is better in mono? I would guess that all of the other from Rubber Soul onward would be better in stereo.
-
Better or not (which is impossible) I will have to buy all of them.
-
Is it true that Sgt Pepper's is better in mono? I would guess that all of the other from Rubber Soul onward would be better in stereo.
It's all a matter of taste of course. There's a lot of people that like the compact sound of mono better. Plus they say that the mono version is the way The Beatles wanted it to sound. But then again, they didn't have the equipment that's available today.
-
I've got a few mono recordings by other artists and i quite like it , seems a cleaner sound less frills to my ears .
-
I've got a bootleg of Pepper in mono and there are some instruments and sounds effects that jump out at you more than on the stereo mix. George Martin has been quoted as saying, "You've never really heard Sgt Pepper until you've heard it in mono."
The Beatles were hardly present during the stereo mixing sessions, they pretty much just left that to the engineers, while they always attended the mono sessions. It wasn't until 8 track came out that they started to shift focus on stereo.
-
In Geoff's book, he states that he and George spent three or four times as long on the mono mixes than they did on the stereo mixes.
They were two completely different sessions, and with nobody really owning stereo equipment in their homes yet, the stereo mixes were (at the time) seen as somewhat of a novelty.
In other words, the real mixes are the mono mixes.
-
but are they the better sounding? that's the bottom line question i have.
-
I would imagine that what they were doing for three or four times longer was making them sound better.........there's not much else they could be doing, and that's generally what mixing is all about :)
But if you mean better sounding to you personally, that's a question only you can answer on 09/09/09.
(personally, and because they're what the band, producer, and engineer considered to be the format that would preserve their artistic intentions for the ages, I'm getting the mono's).
-
It's worth pointing out too that the Beatles mono mixes contain instrumentation and vocalization that simply don't exist on the stereo mixes..........not that you can't hear, but that aren't there!
In other words, if you've never heard the mono mixes, there are previously unheard and original Beatles songs awaiting you.
I don't think it's possible to understate that the Beatles didn't believe the stereo mixes to be of any historical importance, and that it was only the mono mixes they considered to be their true legacy.
Stereo is what it is, and for music originated for stereo playback it's quite wonderful.
For music that's not originated for stereo playback, it is quite frankly, somewhat of a disaster.
None of the Beatles mono releases was originated for stereo playback, but rather they were "re-purposed" for stereo release, and even at that, stereo was considered by the Beatles to be little more than a novelty at the time, not worthy of their personal attention or concern.
-
I'm going with the stereo.
From the press release, it sounds like they aren't doing anything with the mono mixes except re-releasing them on CD. I have most of the mono mixes on my computer in FLAC format, anyway. Pepper, The White Album, and Revolver are the only three mono mixes that seem to have significant differences from the stereo.
I grew up with the stereo versions. They are what I'm used to.
-
Anybody know what they'll be doing about the fake stereo for PPM and WTB.
I've heard some very bad stereo mixes for those two. Just wondering if any cleanup will be done on those, if that's even possible.
-
Not sure if anyone one here mentioned it or not, but I just happended to look at the US store on The Beatles official website. The remasters are now listed for pre-order with pricing. As of now all the cds are $14.95 except for the White Album and Past Masters which are $22.95/each. The boxes are not listed at this time. I hope the prices come down some at the time they are released.

I see The Beatles 1's album as re-entered the UK album charts at # 56 looks like the sticker you saw is working

The Beatles 1 Album climed 10 to # 46 on the UK albums chart giving it a second week on the chart .
I wonder if this is the first sign of remasters fever ?

I've noticed recently most of The Beatles albums - including '1' - being discounted, which is a rarity. Could be the reason for the sales. Or just the current spate of activity in the press is putting them back in the minds of potential buyers.

The Beatles were hardly present during the stereo mixing sessions, they pretty much just left that to the engineers, while they always attended the mono sessions. It wasn't until 8 track came out that they started to shift focus on stereo.
I listened to my vinyl mono copy of Sgt Pepper a couple of times at the weekend. I have to say that, in my opinion, the talk of the mono mixes being vastly superior is probably overstated. I'll leave aside the obvious point about vinyl sounding warmer than CD, and concentrate on the detail of the mixes.
George Martin gave a quote similar to the one above ("You've never really heard Sgt Pepper until you've heard it in mono") to Lewisohn in The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions. The book was first published in 1987, so Martin was most likely comparing the 1960s mono and stereo mixes, not the 1967 mono and 1987 stereo. That's an important distinction, I think, but it's since passed into Beatles lore that the 1960s monos are the best mixes out there.
Compared to the 1960s stereo mixes, sure, they spent more time perfecting the mono versions. However, the recordings were remixed by George Martin in the 1980s. The original mono mixes are certainly different from the 1980s stereo ones, but to say they're superior isn't necessarily true.
There *are* some things that are mixed differently in the original mono Pepper (Good Morning Good Morning sounds bassier and has far more punch to it, and the guitar licks on the title track sound somehow better). However, there are others elements that are mixed better on the CD version - instruments are often faded in and out with less jerkiness than in the mono, in particular. There are also details that were brought to the fore second time around, such as George Harrison's "three, four" count-in before the final verse of Within You Without You, which is much harder to hear on the original mix.
Either way it's all down to personal preference, and when they're all issued in September people will be able to pick and choose their favourite. I just wanted to point out that The Beatles in mono aren't intrinsically better; that's only the case when there are duff stereo versions to compare them to. Most people probably haven't ever *heard* the original 1960s stereo versions, as the majority of people had monophonic equipment and so bought the mono versions in greater quantities.
-
Joe - well thought out post. I always enjoy hearing people's takes on the mono and stereo debates.
I'm guessing all the new remasters will be a step up from what we've had. The debate will only
intensify once we have both new versions in our hands.
-
Dave Clark has stuck to mono mixes of the DC5 stuff, preferring the punchier sound they strived for undiluted by stereo.
Having said that, we all know the Beatles are on a different stratosphere, though there's no denying despite my reservations about the man himself, the singles put out by the DC5 in 1964 were sonically superior to almost everything else.
-
Any ideas or news on how much the remastered box sets will be? I just checked Amazon and no info there. :(
-
I have looked for the DC 5 stereo stuff myself with no results. It is poss they were only recorded mono. There are a few early R Stones recs that that I cannot find either-- Tell Me, Get Off My Cloud, 19th and Last Time.
I do not understand what the big deal is about the 9/9 releases as all of the stuff has been avail in stereo dig remaster for a number of years now.
-
All in stereo! My favourite Please Please Me! I won`t resist it...
From reading Rec The Beales it seems this song is unique in that the stereo and mono versions were actually recorded on two different machines. I have not heard the mono version in a number of years but alas, there are several obvious defects in the stereo master tape that I don't think can be removed. Fortunately the two or three gaffs are over by about 45 secs. The American CD release of Early Beatles is the version I am describing. In this case we may end up with the mono version to be better.
-

If you think they sound alright, then stick with them.
-
Just a thought I had about the remasters packaging. From what I understand, the art work is suppose to be more faithful to the original vinyl issues, correct?
I would love it if the Pepper's disc had all the extras (Sgt Pepper mustaches and badges, etc) that came with the original vinyl and the "White Album" was numbered for a limited run and included art the pics, etc with it as well. I also hope that unlike the currently available disc, that "THE BEATLES" is not printed on in dark lettering. I want the popped up name in white.

Though I'm obviously very pleased that this is finally happening, Apple, once again have failed to get it right. If the promo shots are anything to go by, the packaging looks disappointing to me. I was hoping for something akin to George's 'Living In The Material World' packaging; a good solid digipack plus booklet packaged in a quality printed box. Shouldn't we deserve something like that? They've had years to see how everyone else is doing it, and it looks like poor quality along the lines of the 'Love' CD. And all the mono's in a box set? I may have only bought 2 or 3 of the mono's, now I have to get the lot, when really they should have been included with the stereo versions. Apple really are the pits.
-
just preordered both boxsets from amazon for £295 including postage. can't believe the mono boxset is more expensive just because it is exclusive as a boxset. worked out £100 cheaper than buying from hmv or the official store though

I don't think I'll be buying these when they come out. As a college student, I don't have the scratch. Looks cool though- I think I'll wait a year or so until the prices drop.

these have come straight out of my student loan

Let say in 9/9/2009, you either have one of the box sets or have purchased multiple albums- which one do you go to first? Even though I like Revolver the best, I may spin "The White Album" first.

A Hard Days Night, without question. Then probably With The Beatles, as in my opinion it's the worst sounding of the currently available CD's. Then probably the mono Pepper. Toss up after that.

Please, tell me what the point of buying mono is. :-/

In the 60's mono was the way that artists and producers made the records. Therefore, it is said that this is how the Beatles wanted to release their songs. They almost always attended the mixing for mono, almost never for stereo. There are notable differences between mono and stereo mixes. Mono gives a more compact sound and many people say that this is how the sixties really sounded.

It'll depend on my mood, but at this point I may do either the White Album or Abbey Road first.

The box-sets are now available for pre-order on Play.com in Europe.
Beatles Stereo box with 14CDs and a DVD = GBP 169.99

Thank you very much, Bobber, for the explanation. And mono is more expensive! Would have never thought!

22 years to think about it, and it doesn't seem that they've given it too much though. On a happier note, rumours about the sound quality are very encouraging.

I just figured out - without shipping/handling costs or anything, to order them through beatles.com US store it would be $225.30 US. They don't have the boxset on there. The UK store has the stereo boxset for 199.99 pounds and the mono for 209.99 pounds.

I'm not entirely sure of this, but with the Past Masters being issued in mono as well as stereo, is this the first time we get true mono mixes of 'The Ballad of John and Yoko', and 'Old Brown Shoe'?

There're not mono versions of those two tracks, as there's not a mono version of Abbey Road or Let It Be. "The Ballad Of John And Yoko" was the first Beatles single released in stereo, and since it was never released in mono I don't think that they will create a new mix now.

It'll be interesting to see if they've produced new mono mixes, as these are the only two songs on PM 2 that were never mixed for mono before. The Let It Be film mixes are in mono btw.

Didn't know about the Let It Be film, but I meant the album. I think that the single version of "Let It Be", on PM 2, was only released in stereo too.
I guess that they won't release those song in mono, since it seems that they won't release Abbey Road in mono too. Will they be included in the mono PM 2 anyway? And what about a stereo version of "You Know My Name"? And will "Love Me Do" and "She Loves You" be released in mock stereo?
-
A Hard Days Night, without question. Then probably With The Beatles, as in my opinion it's the worst sounding of the currently available CD's. Then probably the mono Pepper. Toss up after that.
BlueMeanie, does that mean that AHDN is your fave album or are there other reaons you would pick it first?

BlueMeanie, does that mean that AHDN is your fave album or are there other reaons you would pick it first?
Nope, it's my favourite.
-
Nope, it's my favourite.
That's cool. A long time ago I had the cassette tape of it and my dad and I listened to it everytime we were in the car until it wore out. Its the only one w/all Lennon-McCartney originals, correct?
-
^ Correct.
-
AHDN is my fave pre- Rubber Soul album. To me, if someone wants to know what the classic Beatles were and what Beatlemania is, they need to look no further than the AHDN film and album.
-
^ Correct again! :)

Dr. Ebbetts wrote:
Dear friends,
I sincerely hope all is well with you and yours.
Indeed, this is an unexpected mass-mailer. Please forgive the
unsolicited rambles that follow.
To start, there are many of you who have outstanding orders with me at
this time. Some of you have been waiting for a while, and I wish to
apologize for that. Please don't worry. Each and every one of these
outstanding orders will be tended to this week. You have my word.
I appreciate your patience and understanding.
Second, there has been considerable buzz surrounding the new Beatles
remasters, due for release in September. There should be. We have all
been waiting for this day, and it is about to arrive - finally! Thanks
to a long-time supporter and friend to this project, I have had the
opportunity to hear genuine samples of the new remasters due out in two
months.
They are good.
Very good.
Those of you who will be buying them - and those of you who have already
preordered - will not be disappointed.
In fact, I will venture to guess than many of you will be more than
pleasantly surprised at how good they sound.
And with what promises to be outstanding packaging all around, it will
be a collector's nirvana.
From the outset of the Dr. Ebbetts Sound Systems project, I swore that
once EMI did the right thing and released remasters to be proud of, I
would not continue doing what I was doing. After all, the only reason I
did this was because Apple/EMI/Capitol would not - and because I so very
much love the Beatles.
While my love for the band has not changed, everything else has.
EMI/Capitol began their release of the American LPs on compact disc a
few years ago, and now EMI has tackled the British catalogue in fullest
detail.
It's what we all wanted. As Beatles fans, it's what we've prayed for.
To that end - and with the heaviest of hearts - effective immediately,
Dr. Ebbetts Sound Systems will cease operations.
Many of you will recall that the entire purpose of the Dr. Ebbetts
project was to make available to the public the best sounding versions
of the Beatles' original LP releases - with emphasis on the American and
British catalogues. Believe me, it wasn't a hard thing to do considering
the substandard quality of the original CD catalogue from 1987 onward.
The fact of the matter is, the Dr. Ebbetts material does not - and will
not - sound better than what is coming commercially in September. People
I trust agree with me. The remasters sound remarkably well balanced,
with solid, punchy bass, smooth mids and not-to-harsh, yet crisp highs.
In comparison, many of the Ebbetts masters fall short - weaker bass,
dimished mids, and often too-bright highs.
It's a given that the remasters will not please everyone, but they will
be good enough to make the Ebbetts catalogue solidly inferior.
The artwork and packaging of the EMI material will prove to make current
Dr. Ebbetts releases look like Xerox machine fodder.
It pains me, seeing as I have invested so much time in this thing, but I
humbly and officially put this nearly-fourteen year project to bed.
I have outlived my usefulness in this hobby.
I know there are many who will ask why I just don't continue releasing
titles that are NOT being put out by Apple/EMI - foreign releases, rare
pressings, etc..
My reasons are complicated, but they are what they are. In short, if the
Dr. Ebbetts BLUE BOX set is not the definitive sounding version of the
original UK stereo LPs, then why issue them at all?
Many will remember the original BEAT CDs of the 1990s that presented the
Beatles US LPs sourced from cassettes. I surely do. They became
immediately obsolete with the advent of Dr. Ebbetts. No one bought those
BEAT CDs anymore when I came along. Why would they? At the time, my
material was far superior.
The Ebbetts BLUE BOX series was only issued because Apple/EMI's versions
were substantially inferior to anything I - or any number of
needledroppers - were putting out. The Ebbetts BLUE BOX set is at THE
HEART of the Dr. Ebbetts Sound Systems collection, in my estimation. If
that set is now inferior to the commercial release, then it has no
business existing. Suffice to say, I would not release the BLUE BOX set
today if new remasters were already commercially available.
I would have no need.
And if my CORE SET is inferior, I don't wish to have the rest of the
catalogue branded as such either.
Therefore, it is time to put it all on the shelf.
I am requesting that all of you who have LPs with me contact me as soon
as possible and let me know which ones are yours so that I might send
them back to you. I promise I will get those to you in short order.
So that your return LP requests will not be lost in what promises to be
a hectic e-mail shuffle, please put "MY LPs" somewhere in the subject
line.
Your generosity, kindness and willingness to share your treasured
possessions with me is something I shall never forget.
To each and every one of you who has supported me and befriended me
throughout the years, I wish to extend my deepest gratitude. Your
loyalty has moved me beyond words. This entire project began as a
fanciful hobby many years ago and has mushroomed into something far
beyond anything I could have imagined.
From every corner of the entire world, I have been blessed to meet some
of the best Beatle people out there. I will never forget you.
But now it is time to make way for the "big boys."
Please be sure to secure your copies of the remasters. I guarantee they
will replace your Dr. Ebbetts CDs in your rotations and playlists - as
they should. Display them proudly and let people know who the greatest
band of all time is.
Remember, quoting my project motto from all those years ago, it is ONLY
about the music.
That is why I do what I do today.
Now go put your hard-earned money to good use!
God Bless.

Yeah, I just got this email too, Penny. I played the Revolver mini doc and it's not really new. All the stuff is from Anthology.

I know, I was rather disappointed about that. But they say it's just an "excerpt," so it sounds like there's more to watch. I just hope the docs aren't all rehashes, though.

Please, tell me what the point of buying mono is. :-/
You have obviously never heard any of them. In many cases, the mono (yes this is subjective) sound far better, more bassey, punchy, etc. Also, the mono mixes are truly 'alternative' mixes as they are distinctly different mixes than the stereo. Sometimes the differences are minor, sometimes the differences are night and day. Check out the mono pepper and mono white album for the best examples of what I am speaking of.
-
With the comments of Dr Ebbetts, I now have confidence that the remasters are going to sound as good as promised. I was concerned that Dr Ebbetts would still sound better.
Now I am really getting excited for 09-09-09, except for the money part of it. :o
-
I can see the argument for discounting Magical Mystery Tour and including those songs on Past Masters... but I think now MMT has become a part of The Beatles official discography as an album. A lot of people have grown up with MMT as a Beatles album now and so there's a big audience for the MMT album. Plus, MMT may not have been intended as an album but quite a few of the songs were written specifically for the project. And to me it flows together like an album for the most part (with the exception of "All You Need Is Love"... which never seems like it fits to me.)
-
I read somewhere that the mini documentaries certainly are 'mini'...they are all about 4 minutes each! :o
I am only really interested in the remastered music, and the docs a bonus, but 4 minutes each! :-\
-
Just want to pop in and say how stoked I am about the remasters...on 090909 I'm taking the day off work and listening to every album one after the other.....LOUD!

Thanks for the pics!
It's interesting that they've used a US Capitol-style label for the MMT CD, since MMT as a full-length album was first released there, rather than replicating the UK EP label style.
I wonder what label the Past Masters CD will have. That one isn't shown.
And I see the cover of PPM still says "Please Please Me with Love Me Do and 12 other songs" rather than "Please Please Me with Love Me Do and 12 other songs plus a mini documentary" ;D

I was hoping for raised lettering on The White Album :(
-
I was hoping for raised lettering on The White Album :(
Same here!! And numbered!
-
Yeah - they could have at least put a number on there, even if it's the same number on every CD.
090909 would have been perfect (actually, someone must own that copy of the original white album - I wonder if it's worth more now?!)
And "The Beatles" lettering could have been embossed and left white because they now have the Beatles/Apple logo up in the top left corner to identify it, just in case anyone REALLY doesn't know what album this is.
-
Hi all!
Was mightily impressed with Dr. Ebbett's evaluation of the remasters and also his honesty and scruples about discontinuing his great work of the last few years. We need a few more people like him in Apple/EMI!
Re the albums...looking at the cd pictures (and I am partially sighted), I wonder how sturdy the cd cases are. Getting the cds themselves out looks a tad fiddldy. I've got loads of cds with this style of cd casing and they don't really stand the test of time. Oh well, at least the music sounds as though it'll make up for any shortcomings elsewhere...
Here's a post from Wogblog - All Things Beatle. Very interesting. I've not read this information anywhere else.

ahhhh!!!!!!! Bobber, its making me cry with joy just looking at those photos, stop exciting me!, hehe :P

Great Photos! 8)
As I said, really looking forward to this. I am extremely disappointed that they won't be remixed...a whole 'nother topic, but I read this post over on the Amazon discussion boards and it kind of explains how I feel about the whole thing:
T. A. Goldich says:
I am not so polite as others who've commented on this thread. The news that the upcoming Beatle remasters will not be remixes frankly appalls and sickens me. I'm not prepared to be satisfied with whatever infinitesimal sonic improvements as can be sussed out of those same old tapes. Even if they do sound a tiny bit better I don't know that I could bear to listen to them without weeping for what could have been. I'm supposed to put the "new" Rubber Soul on, the one I've waited over two decades for, only to hear the vocals panned even farther off center than on the 1987 release! I don't know about you, but I think it would be just too gallingly painful. I don't think I could stand it.
If, for historic purposes, they want to present the original mixes sounding their best, great; I'm all for it. But don't rob of us for over $400 then make us wait interminably for the real deal. We've heard what remixing can do. We know the improvements to be enormous; let's have them now, right now! If the Doors can receive lavish attentions to their oeuvre, the Beatles deserve at least as much.
But why should companies make the efforts they ought to make when so few consumers have standards high enough to demand it? Predictably, the news that the upcoming Beatle re-release will be culled from the very same tapes as the 1987 release, is greeted with miniscule protest. Half the commentators on this list are perfectly OK with this outrage. Many are so averse to change they don't even grasp vast sound quality improvements as a good thing. The other half, are only ever so slightly miffed. Very few seem to see this for the horrific disappointment and monumental missed opportunity that it truly is. Sure, some year, some decade from now, the remixes will doubtless be made available, but I'm not some passive cow who can be told to wait out my life for something on the dictates of a corporate whim. I've done over two decades of waiting for Beatle music to receive proper treatment. I've waited long enough, and so have you!
They spent "four years" doing nothing? Let's get this straight people, the powers that be have chosen to deliver the absolute rock bottom, dirt minimum they possibly, possibly can and still maintain any credibility, at all. How could anyone settle for that?! If we consumers were not such sheep, we would stand up en masse and shout: Not good enough! Wrong! Try again! We would so boycott these upcoming releases and so deluge Apple with letters of well-earned outrage as to force the suits to deliver the product they should have delivered in the first place. We could have the infinitely superior remixes in a matter of months instead of years. But consumer cows will buy the inferior product in huge quantities and the bean counters will feel no pressure at all. They'll take their sweet time about doing it right. Many young people will turn their noses up at Revolver for its tinny antiquated sound and who knows if we original Beatle fans will still be alive by the time corporate finally gets around to delivering the goods.
(He goes on to say...)
Truth is, I'll be buying the damn things too. I'll take the minutia of improvement if that's all I can get. But some aspects of the same old sound really will be hard to take knowing how they could and should have been improved.
I couldn't be happier that the authentic mixes will be presented sounding their best, that's as it should be of course. But in the absence of new mixes there is simply nothing to get excited about. It would have been worth a lot more than $200 to me to have the experience of listening to all the Beatle music rendered new and refreshed and exciting again with vocals centered the way they ought to be. But no, there is to be nothing new; nothing to get excited about. Just the same old music presented in the same old way. Who cares? The mono mixes? I've already got `em, who cares? CDs culled from those same stereo masters, I'VE ALREADY GOT `EM! Whatever minutia of improvement that may come of re-mastering isn't enough to get excited about.
It's as if I were a little kid dying from the wait for Christmas only to be told they canceled Christmas. To add insult to injury I read the multitude of posts delighting in this: Hooray! There is to be nothing new! No alternate listening experience! No excitement! No improvements of any kind!!! ("Happy days are here again . . ."). Well those of you want to hear the exact same thing in the exact same way are going to get what you want. You never have to suffer the horror of new or changed or improved. But take pity on those of us whose aspirations reach out to something more than that.
------------------------------
Take that as you will but I felt it was pretty much bang on with my own thoughts on the situation...
Also, I have a question for anyone who can answer it: has anyone heard that I Feel Fine, She's A Women, Bad Boy, Yes It Is, I'm Down, Slow Down, I Call Your Name, Long Tall Sally and Matchbox are being omitted from the stereo version of Past Masters? I've read this here and there and it's beginning to concern me.

Certain peoples will be sitting a few inches higher this Fallumn...
Can you get these in Stereo and Mono individually?

-
Another almost random thought that has occurred to me today....
The stereo mixes have some interesting quirks of note. Here's a few that spring to mind.
The Please Please Me album, recorded on 2-track and thus to get a stereo mix, we have the voices on one side and the instruments on another. There are more several different stereo mixes of the various songs, so which version will we get? We're either going to get either the vocals to one side....etc, or, the vocals to the centre, but where would the instruments go?
She Loves You. There are a few drop outs in sound on this track and also that the master tape has not survived, and so, there can't be a truly stereo mix. Does this mean we're back to the awful fake stereo or whatever term they used?
If I Fell. At around 1:47 Paul's voice cracks whilst singing the words "...in vain", as he harmonises with John.
Day Tripper. We all know that there are various drop outs in Day Tripper. It was fixed for the ONE album, so hopefully that fixed version will be used here.
What does anybody else thing, or am I on my own on this one? ;D
-
After much thought, considering the prices are about the same for the complete "Rock Band" set with instruments and the deluxe box set of the stereo remasters, I'm gonna put my money in and get the remasters box set. In the long run, I'll get more of my money's worth on that. I can get the game for the Beatles' "Rock Band" because I've already had a PS3 and a guitar already from Guitar Hero. Money is tight right now, but I think the best "bang for the buck" is the remasters set. And I've been hearing that it is absolutely AMAZING!!!!
And thanks for all those pictures posted of the remasters. You're already making me "hungry" for it!!!!

I just thought about it, and on MMT below the picture it does not have the "Includes 24-page full color picture book" description. The package is supposed to have the book though. They are going with the later artwork that did not include the booklet.

Yes, the additional songs are included as well. It's not the double EP version.
-

Yes, that is what I felt too. I just was noticing the artwork. They are using the Capitol artwork, and not the EMI EP artwork. I think I am glad of that. I believe the first issue had the line about the "full color picture book", at least according to Spizer it does, and my recollections. I am just surprised they are not doing the same on the new packaging.
I do not know when on 19th November 1976 MMT came out in the UK as a album, what the artwork looked like. I am pretty sure it had the "full color picture book" line in the artwork. Ah, something to find wrong. I should have waited for the critics to do this.
-
Yeah they sound good but they're still in sideways stereo...

Has anyone else heard any rumors that the remasters might be pushed back from 9/9/09? I ask because I just was on-line with a Best Buy customer service, asking questions about delivery and/or in-store pick-up. Here is the conversation, bolded for emphasis:
Michael : Thank you for contacting BestBuy.com, my name is Michael How can I assist you today?
customer : Hi, i had a question about the upcoming Beatles Cd box sets
Jeff : If I order online, can I pick it up in-store? It says coming soon.
Michael : Please hold one moment.
Jeff : If not, and I order from your website, will I receive the CDs on the release day if I select Express shipping?
Michael : If you request express shipping you will receive your items 2-3 days after release.
Jeff : So there is no way to receive the discs on release day?
Michael : If you were to be at the store on release day, You could.
Jeff : I understand that, but I would like some assurance that they will not be sold out (like pre-ordering them for pick-up)
Michael : May I have the SKU number of the items please?
Jeff : Sure, 9459276 The Beatles: Mono Box Set
Michael : Thank you. Please hold one moment.
Michael : I'm sorry, In store pickup is not an option.
Jeff : How likely is it that my Best Buy would receive this box set, in XXXXX (location removed)
Jeff : I have heard this is a limited sale item
Michael : I'm sorry, I don't have that information.
Jeff : Do you have any information on quantities available overall? I have heard there are only 10,000 copies.
Michael : No, I'm afraid I dont.
Jeff : Is there any reason stated why these are not available for in-store pick-up?
Michael : There is no reason stated.
Jeff : OK, well since you can't seem to answer any of my questions, I guess that's all for me. Thanks anyway.
Michael : Do you have something against ordering online for delivery?
Jeff : Yes, I would like to receive the discs on release date, because I am travelling the day afterwards
Michael : I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
Michael : You know there is a possibility they will not be released 9/9/2009
Jeff : Really? That is the first I have heard about this.
Michael : Before we disconnect, Is there anything else that I can help you out with today?
Jeff : I guess not
Michael : Thank you for selecting to chat with a BestBuy.com Agent today. Please feel free to contact us again, or call 1-888-Best-Buy for any of your future needs. Have a wonderful weekend.
I would not expect this Best Buy employee to know more than anyone else in the world, but it just struck me as strange. Anyone heard anything?
-
Well, I have even less faith in Best Buy now, because I ended up pre-ordering the mono box off their website, and with Express shipping, it now says:
Estimated Arrival: 8/25-8/26/2009,
so I really don't think they know what is going on.
-
I certainly do not know anything about them being pushed back. If that were so, and that happened, it would be the blunder of the century. There is so much anticipation, and the let down would be tremendous. I don't think Apple and EMI can afford a blunder like this right now. What little bit of credibility they have right now would go down the drain.
It could be business suicide for them.

Thanks again Bobber. These are going to be soooo much better than the '87 discs packages. I love the artwork on the back. It is supposed to be faithful to the original artwork, correct?
-
It looks like some of the artwork is different. Some looks close.
It looks like there are barcodes and anti-piracy notices. It looks like the early albums have the Apple logo on them as well. I like that they put the Long Play 33 1/3 R.P.M. on them, that is cool.
I hope the US (since that is where I am, and presuming that is the version I get), has the Parlophone logo. I also hope that Rubber Soul has the UK colors (or should I say colours).
Thanks Bobber for the pics. I should have seen that on the Hoffman board.

I need some advice. I am really broke, and, as such, can't purchase the remasters as soon as they come out. I am however going to ask for them for Christmas. Which should I ask for? The stereo or mono? I'd really like to hear the mono as it's the format for which they were originally intended, but my sound system is a cheapie and I fear that I wouldn't really get much out of it.
What do you think?
-
Another question...
Those who buy any of the box set. In what order you listen them?
Chronologically? Your favourites first? Random? Any other way?

If I had the box set, I'd go for the White Album first...more out of sentimentalism than anything else. (The White Album was the first Beatles CD I ever bought for myself many years ago.)
-
I just realized that Imagine was originally released on 09-09-71. Not really of significant importance, but interesting.
-
I think that I take the first sunday for a long beatles session in the order that they release it, including the singles
-
Me going to listen in order. That way, not only do you get to hear them chronologically, you get to hear the technology they had and the advances they made in order, too. Then, hopefully (!), whatever they've done to the masters will be more amazing.
Or stuff that, and go straight to Rubber Soul! :D
-
According to the HMV site if you order a individual album you get a free cut out Beatle
-
Whaaaaaat? Oh hale YES. I've always wanted a cut-out cardboard person!
-
I think they're only small cutouts. :(
-
couple friends of mine have heard all the new music and are beyond enthusiastic about the sound- one is firm on liking the monos of PPM & WTB much better than the stereo versions, but both agree that the sound quality, even on ripped mp3's is just remarkable.

"Baby's in Black" really jumps out at you. I was literally blown back by the beginning percussion. Is this the mono version or stereo?
-
there's been some talk about the relatively spartan packaging for the remasters box. here's an interesting alternative:

The first disc I will listen to will also be out of sentimentalism, not what is my fave. You see, when I had just turned 9 I got a cd player for my birthday and some money. I wanted to by a Beatles cd with the $ and bought Please Please Me as my first cd ever. I found out later that it was the Beatles' first and I thought that was cool. Therefore, when I get the disc, I will play it first for old times sake.

curious if you were able to purchase the mono separately, would you choose it over stereo?
-
I am pretty sure that I would. I have always wanted to hear it in that format and that's the way the band (at least originally) intended me to hear it. I would also get Sgt Pepper mono as well.

Very, very, very interesting stuff. I'm buying the Remasters stereo box set when it comes out next Wednesday. I've already been "bugging" a local video game store that I want one of those huge Beatle posters they have hanging in the window advertising the Beatles' "Rock Band" game.........and I'm still bugging them....
-
Did they say no?

you going to spend all that then Aspie on the stereo boxset? :D i've pre-ordered four albums a few days back
(pepper, with the beatles, rubber soul & abbey road). i'm going to buy the stereo ones seperatly, and i keep
saying i want the mono boxset for my birthday in December but i don't think i can wait that long!!!!!!! :P

1 week!

again, i have little doubt that you'll have to wait long to get the individual monos in some format...not in this day and age.

I agree. I would love to have the actual releases though. I am a fan of the album covers and artwork and think it is an important part. I'm not so big on just mp3s.
-
i hear you. i'd actually prefer the stereo remastered cd's to look more like the monos. i've never liked those plastic cd cases- so very 1980's.
-
I just asked for the Box of Vision for Christmas. I hope it is a cool as it looks on the site. I want the booklet with all of the album artwork.

my bad- the cases aren't plastic.
-
In HMV they were selling new Beatles design tshirts one had all the albums on, the other had Beatles shadows & a with the beatles tshirt. I might get them.
-
i've now heard the mono AHDN, SP and AR- honestly, though obviously better sounding than what i've been listening to for 40 years, i'm much less impressed w/ the improvements of these monos than the revelation which is AR- i've always thought this was the best sounding B's album (w/ the best musicianship), but now it's so beautifully rounded, full of boldness and subtlety. mccartney's bass, which always ruled here, is now much more up front and dynamic- i read recently that one feels like they're right there in the studio- watching and listening to paul sitting on a stool w/ his fender laying down his bass lines, and this is absolutely true. even on lennon's and harrison's personal creations, paul drives them along. highlights for me were come together- forceful and punchy- the best B's opener made better, and i want you- now a true powerhouse of layered sound. what inspired lennon to play the most tasteful, jazzy, lead guitar (this side of 'something') in the band's history? but i think most of the talk will be about the side 2 medley, which perhaps benefits most from the remastering. the detail here from incomparable harmonizing, to night sounds, to straightforward rock will astound. despite lennon's cynicism, let's just tip our hat here and now to mccartney and martin for perhaps the best produced sequence in popular music. take notice- it's better than you ever imagined.
-
But there is no Abbey Road mono to be officially released. :'(
-
I just see the price of the stereo box set here, in Argentina. 1600 pesos!!! (414 dollars) The double of the Amazon price. Incredible.
-
But there is no Abbey Road mono to be officially released. :'(
you won't be disappointed.

By the bootleg?
-
^ The boot is a fold down. There is no mono master.
-
well here's a few questions,
with the new re-issues, is everybody going to keep the 1987 cd's?
everybody who loves Let It Be..Naked, are you going to bother buying the old newly remastered version?
is everybody bothered on the remastered version of the Yellow Submarine 1969 album with the George
Martin compositions on? ( i know its got a classic on their, Hey Bulldog, but the i hardly listen to the rest of it)

Yes. Rule (although I tend to let it slip...) is that we don't post links to officially released material. In the past we have made links available for a pre-listen tho. Plus it isn't released officially yet. I will remove the links after 9/9 if you post them.

Question 1: The old CD's will be demoted to my car CD's.
Questions 2 and 3: If I get the remastered stereo box set, then those will obviously wind up in my collection.
-
Safest thing to do is PM the links. Many sites were closed down last year, so be careful.

That is absolutely true. Oh, and put me on your list please. ;)

And me!

I know I am new to this and have already sent a private PM. Please add me to the PM list for the link please. Would be nice to hear them for my roadtrip tomorrow night. I already prepaid for my local HMV to have one copy of each box next Wednesday. Somehow, I am a bit dubious about the Mono though. Time will tell...... :-\

Just saw this on Twitter
Many Beatles fans will not be happy on Beatles Day
[Posted by Dave Haber on Friday, 09/04/09 12:18 pm] [Comments] [Full Blog] [Tweet This]
Next Wednesday, 09/09/09, is Beatles Day, as The Beatles: Rock Band and the Beatles Remastered CDs are released all over the world. However, it seems many Beatles fans who were looking forward to hearing those Beatles remasters will be disappointed on Beatles Day.
We can now report that as of last night, the official US Beatles store at beatles.com now shows, next to its listings for the box sets, that pre-ordered box sets will be shipped late, not on the originally promised date of 09/09/09.
The site now says that pre-orders for the Beatles Stereo Box set will ship at "the end of September," and the listing for the Beatles Mono Box even later, listed as shipping the "first week of October."
A Beatles News reader tells us that they checked their status of their order on the beatles.com store for the Mono Box last night, and the site shows no info on the order, and further, he says that his bank account, which had been previously charged for the order, now shows the charge for the order, $315 with shipping, as being credited back to his account. He is now concerned that the status of his order has changed, but can't get any further info about it from the site.
Our Beatles News tipster also reports that he was told by a local record store owner in the Dallas, Texas area, that their allotment of stereo box sets has been reduced to just 3 copies by EMI. He says the store owner was told by the label that there may indeed be a shortage of Stereo Box sets on 09/09/09, and that many major retailers will have neither the Stereo or the Mono Box sets in their stores on Beatles Day.
We are trying to follow up with Signatures Network, the company that runs the store on beatles.com, but we haven't gotten any feedback on this from them yet. Stay tuned to Beatles News for updates on the status of this fast-changing situation.

The White Albums ones do not seem to work though but the others came through just fine.
It works. The only track that is broken is Back in the USSR...but I provided a separate link for that.
-
Thanks again! I still cannot get the White Albums to work but MMT came through just fine. Got the Past Masters? We Can Work It Out has always been one of my favourite tracks.
-
Question 1: The old CD's will be demoted to my car CD's.
Questions 2 and 3: If I get the remastered stereo box set, then those will obviously wind up in my collection.
yes, looks like we got no choice then,
i suppose thinking of it, i will keep the original cds as they were the first time i got that particuliar Beatles
album.

This is ridiculous, but thank you for the report.
At least my birthday is on September 25th, meaning I can order the stereo boxset soon and hopefully it will arrive near that date.....
-
As for the 1987 cds, I will be keeping them all. I'm a collector and everything is part of the collection. I guess this is where the less obsessive fans and the people like me, where everything is kept and preserved separate! ;D
I think the delivery of the boxsets is becoming a farce. I've ordered my boxsets from Amazon.co.uk and they are currently saying that they will be delivered no later than 15th September, as I selected free postage. If this news from the US is true, we all ought to keep a check on what's happening with our orders.
-
Got the Past Masters? We Can Work It Out has always been one of my favourite tracks.
Here's the Past Masters:
Edit. Please PM links. Thanks.
-
Thanks for the links guys.
-
Here's the Past Masters:
Is this the "real" remasters? The "Thank you girl" version got some harmonica's pieces that there's not in the official release. I think that this maybe is another remaster (Dr Ebbets?)
-

no, a lot of things come through that weren't heard on the original stereo CDs. it's real.
-
I have not formed a conclusive opinion yet, but so far, some tracks sound "loud" to me. I have only listened to some tracks, will wait for actual releases to form an absolute opinion.
They sound very clear and crisp though, that, I like.
-
I just listened to Day Tripper, it sounds like the dropout has been fixed.
-
I just listened to Day Tripper, it sounds like the dropout has been fixed.
I listened to Got To Get You Into My Life in the car and it suprised me how tight it sounded. And tho I'm not a fan of the song, but I Want To Tell You even sounded like a decent Beatles song. ;D
-
I've edited out all the links above. Too risky to go posting those here, as already stated. Use PM or e-mail.

I personally like Past Masters (Remastered) :)
-
I decide buy it per album, not the box. Here, the EMI Argentina are crazy. The Box set Stereo cost $1.700 pesos argentinos (440 dollars) The double that the price in Amazon, and the import taxs are only the 20%. I don't give my money to the EMI executives.
I decide buy it in order, so the 09-09-09 I will buy "Please, please me"
-
from newsweek.com, less a review than a thoughtful commentary on what these remasters and their likely popularity say about us and the beatles' music. nicely thought out piece:

on mono help! at the moment. love these so much
-
In HMV today they had a cut out Yellow Submarine on the ceiling and played a few remastered Beatles tracks they sounded amazing.
-
My Stereo box set arrived from Amazon this morning :)
I decided against getting the mono box set and bought a new CD player instead , as my old one is not much cop .
Might get the mono albums nearer Christmas .
First on was my beloved White Album and it jumped right out of the speakers and smacked me right in the kisser ;D
Brilliant sound quality it's amazing absolutely crystal clear it's like having them in the room , i'm very impressed :)
Sgt. Pepper's is going on next or maybe Abbey Road can't decide .
Wish John and George were here to hear them , that sad thought as entered my head , but otherwise i'm a very happy bunny :)
-
dave- it'll be interesting if we see any bump in cd player sales! ;)

lucky you, you got the boxset on the day! still not recived mine, i ordered them seperatly, not all of them yet though.

I almost cried because I went to HMV and they were sold out of the mono set so I went across the street to Best Buy. Got the mono set and just a little while ago I was in a local Starbucks and they're selling the individual CDs (for once, cheaper than HMV!). Earlier today I was listening to a Detroit radio station and they were playing almost every remastered Beatles song in alphabetical order
-
That's what my mom said, about starbucks! I want to get some of those!!
And I'm just listening to all the remasters on the radio right now. They are playing them A-Z so I'm hearing them all! So COOL!!
"I'm a Loser" is playing now! ;D

Haha, that's what the Detroit station was doing. I stopped listening to it because it started cutting out when I was heading towards the north end of the city. I was amazed I could get the station 2 hours away from Detroit even!

As of now at Amazon (USA), the Beatles Rockband game for the Wii is #1 and the version for Xbox is #3 for video games.
The Beatles' stereo box set has rocketed up to #1 and the mono set is up at #2 for their music bestsellers. The remastered "Abbey Road" is #3.
Amazing, just amazing...

Who needs Christmas anymore?? Hehehe. :)
-
I'm enjoying The Beatles Past Masters album (2009) or as i now like to call it (The Black Album) ;D
-
I gave Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Road a few spins, my first impressions:
- First thing that came to mind: wow, was the bass guitar always this loud in the mix?
- It's amazing how much better, fresher and more lively the sound is. I think you can compare it to having listened to a tape copy of an album for years and then finally getting the real CD.
- Packaging (obviously) sure is a hell of a lot better than on the 1987 CDs. Great to finally have a decent booklet. LP replica sleeves (I believe the box sets do have those?) would've been even cooler though. And why isn't the lettering on the side the same? It's in regular type on MMT and on AR it's in bold and bigger. Nitpicking, I know, but I figure it would seem a bit inconsistent if you've got all the CDs in a row.
-
Has anyone listened to Help! in stereo? The songs really kick now but still I feel like in "Act Naturally"not much was done. . . it misses that kick of the kick drum like in the other songs minus the "I can play the part. . .". Great album to me. One of my favorite not "groundbreaking" albums.
-
Yeah , i have been listening to the Help one today and your right, i was actually comparing it to the
original cd and i have to say its ten times much better, much louder, crisper on sound, vocals are coming
through better! i'm even noticing little silly things like someone clapping throughout Ticket to Ride which
i never noticed before! :o
-
Has anybody noticed that "We Can Work It Out" on the Mono Masters cd has varying levels of volume? It starts with a boom and then immediately quietens and this happens at various points throughout the song. It seems odd that it would have passed the various listening tests, not least the listening test carried out with Paul and Ringo in attendance!
Overall, I'm knocked out by the quality, both of the production but also Ringo's drums and Paul's bass, which really leaps out at you on the early albums. It's interesting to note that there was almost a different snare drum sound on each album.
-
I've noticed Paul's bass playing more it's very heavy and pulsates through the songs .
-
OOooohhh I want mine to come already!!! But Amazon ran out and I have to wait for them to restock :-\ It said to will come between October 1st and 8th. And I am NOT a patient person.

I know how you feel...I'm still waiting for my Beatles Rockband special edition package to get here!!! It's so irritating! >:(

One of my friends who is not a Beatles fan as bought Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road remasters which i find amazing as his CD collection is nearly all Kylie and Madonna , who say's hairdresser's don't have taste ;D
When i asked him why he had bought these two albums he said he liked the packaging ;D

As good as his choices are, buying music based upon the packaging is a bit daft!
-
I've discovered lots of great albums (bought in thrift stores mind you) because I liked the album art.
-
I love the packaging on these.
Shiny and glossy. They look and feels great.
And the cardboard is of way better quality than most others.
Much more solid and not as easy to wear out.
The resolution on the actual pictures are great and the covers look better than ever.
-
I was only poking gentle fun about the covers! I've bought a fair few records on the basis that the cover will be a good pointer towards that which is most important...the music.
I love the packaging. The mono records are just beautiful, awesome pieces of mini-art. I look at them and just feel emotional. It's a shame they're not being released on vinyl, as to see these on a 12" format would be perfect. So much great cover art is lost when it's shrunk down to the size of a cd case.
The stereo covers are beautiful, too. I love the extra pictures and the booklets. Finally, Apple/EMI have taken an interest in these records. The 1987 cds were perfunctory and issued without any attention lavished upon them. Now they've been lovingly treated as they should be and the results bear wonderous fruit. I could go on, but it's boring you all....
Nothing is Beatleproof.
-
I think it's clever how the boxset opens and closes with a magnetic bit to it
