An Angry Letter To The NY Times From John Lennon, Just Because

Here's one of those things that makes you realize that the Internet was created for us to trade notable ephemera: A website called Letters of Note published an angry handwritten note from John Lennon to the New York Times after the Times' Craig McGregor wrote a piece called "The Beatles Betrayal" that said that The Beatles stole music from black acts, and got rich doing it. Lennon's rebuttal is angry, but maybe sort of off the point?:

I wouldn't call it 'angry', but it was fun to read.

Yeah, it definitely wasn't angry.

I think John was right, though. The Beatles covered those songs because they worshipped the black artists. It was a way of paying tribute to them.

Andrew Winistorfer, you are an idiot. "Angry"? "Off the point"? Hell no. I'm not a fan of 1970s John Lennon as a person, I think he was an egocentric prick most of time, so I wouldn't defend him if I didn't think that this letter was perfectly clear, reasonable and justified. But it is 100%.

A lot of the white rock & roll artists of the time were that way, though. The Beatles weren't the first group to do it.

However, they were the first band that made it big with that sound. And they made it mainstream. Sort of the way that Michael Jackson kicked in the door for black artists on MTV in the 80's.

That Letter shows me that LENNON adored his music (LENNON SAVES).
