Favourite live albums
« on: January 22, 2009, 04:18:23 PM »

I'm not a great big fan of live albums, as most don't do a very good job of conveying the atmosphere at the time. And some are scandalously well overdubbed in the studio. But there are a few that I love:

It's Too Late To Stop Now - Van Morrison (IMO, second greatest album ever made)
Live At Leeds - The Who (I think the original shorter version works better)
Slade Alive - Slade (Such an overlooked album. Blistering live set, and possibly the first recorded belch!)

Seen him 3 times and he did not disappoint on any occasion. I even got a drum skin signed by the band. :)
Wild Wood is probably my fave studio album but even though I have not listened to lIve wood in a while, I remember that really inspiring my music playing and for a while it made my previously fave Wild Wood seem a little tame. Especially Foot of the Mountain. I also like his 'white' album Weller Weller quite a bit too. Was into some of Heavy Soul & Stanley Rd but lost my way a bit after that.

Wynton Marsalis Septet - In This House, In This Morning

Disciplined freedom for me.

I havn't actually got many 'live' albums rather than video's...A good one is rare it seems...Will have to look into this area further.

Live At Leeds by the Who is a classic! However I enjoy more watching the video of their performance at The Isle Of Wight Festival (1970).

In general, I'm not a big fan of live albums, but I really dig Bless Its Pointed Little Head by Jefferson Airplane despite a few painful moments like the boring long closer "Bear Melt".

Here's an interesting version of "Somebody To Love" from that album:

Jefferson Airplane - Bless It's Pointed Little Head - 03 - Somebody To Love

And one of my favorite live songs ever, with an incredible bass playing by Jack Casady:

Jefferson Airplane - Bless It's Pointed Little Head - 06 - The Other Side Of This Life

I'm not really a fan of live albums and I'd be embarrassed to admit how few I actually own. If the hype surrounding them is really big ('Live at Leeds', 'The Name of This Band is Talking Heads' etc) than I'll probably give them a few listens, but otherwise, I have no desire in chasing every live release, not even from my absolute favourite bands. I'd much, much rather watch a DVD.
